A powerful computer provides a convenient operator interface for instrument control, color graphics and data management and retrieval. The rugged dispersant-circulation system and the incredibly stable optical system deliver what you need on the job in a user-friendly package: performance, flexibility and reliability. 3 From 0.02 µm to 1,000 µm with no optical change The LA-910 uses an optical system especially developed by Horiba. Multiple light sources and a large-diameter lens with low optical aberration enable the LA-910 to measure particle size distribution across the entire range of 0.02 µm to 1,000 µm in 20 seconds with no need to adjust lenses. Even with samples where the distribution range is not known there is no longer any need for range selection. 80 channels of resolution accurate, precise analysis The LA-910 uses an iterative deconvolution method to calculate particle-size distribution. The results of analysis are displayed as histograms with the measurement range divided into 80 segments. This gives a highly resolved view of the size distribution. Now it is easy to identify the peaks in mixed samples with particles of different sizes. 2

4 User-friendly operation under Microsoft Windows TM environment The LA-910 works with Microsoft Windows TM to provide a user-friendly interface. Just point with the mouse at on-screen choices to set the parameters for measurement and display, start sequence of analyses, or retrieve and manipulate data in different formats. 3

This means you can use the mouse for virtually everything on the LA The LA-910 sets up three basic types of application windows for you to work under: Measurement Windows, Sequence Windows, and Utility Window. Microsoft Windows TM version 3.1 The Sample Preparation Unit is controlled automatically for ease in adjusting dilution, dispersion, and more The Sample Preparation Unit has everything you need, including an ultrasonic dispersion bath with stirrer, a flowcell, and a circulating pump. It automatically prepares the sample, stirring and dispersing it in an appropriate fashion, and then performs the measurement. Throughout the measurement, the particles suspended in the sample fluid are automatically maintained at the proper concentration, eliminating measurement errors. Real-time processing of all types of sample data for truly efficient measurements The LA-910 is loaded with an array of sophisticated features as standard equipment. The Scattered-Light Intensity- Distribution/Transmittance Monitor Readout makes it easy to determine the sample density and the scattered light intensity distribution accurately at just a glance. The Quick PSD Readout gives you a fast, precise confirmation of the sample's particle-size distribution including both distribution status and the agglomeration status. All these features and more that process the data for you in real time enable you to make quick, accurate decisions concerning the measurement and dispersion conditions. Much faster and more accurate measurements are now possible than ever before. Condition File simplifies the parameter-setting process Once you have specified the optimum parameters for measurement, display, and other factors for a particular sample, all thes information may be stored in condition file as a retrievable data-set. A data set in condition file may be activated at any time just by pointing the sample I.D. Measurement procedures will be carried out using the exact parameters you had specified previously. This greatly enhances operational efficiency. Also, since the results for particular sample types may be shown using the same specified display format, you are assured of greater stability in repeat measurements. Editing function for one-touch automated measurements This window's editing function is used to customize the meaurement sequence. For example if you want to do completely automated measurements using the optional Auto-Sampler or if you just need quick results for a rouine operation it's easy to edit the sequence for up to 255 steps. System Check Function assures reliability of measurement results Each time the LA-910 unit is turned on, it automatically performs a self-diagnostic system check. Measurements will commence only after it has been determined that the system is in optimum condition. This invaluable function gives you complete assurance in the accuracy of your measurement results. 4

6 Flexible handling of data Not only does the LA-910 allow you to display particle-size distribution data in a variety of formats; it also gives you the flexibility to manipulate and process the data freely. The LA-910 now has the power to meet the most stingent demands for high-level data processing in the laboratory. 10-channel quick memory Up to ten sets of measurement results can be stored in memory by just pointing the mouse. This function offers many important advantages.for example, multiple overlapping particle-size distribution curves may displayed simultaneously. It also permits handy temporary storage of data in the main memory until you are ready to download it on to disks for permanent storage. Built-in text conversion function allows you to process data to meet the needs of each job Conversion to standard ASCII file format is done automatically for easy transporting of data, directly or by modem, to a host computer or LIMS. This function is especially convenient when you need to work directly from your PC to use measurement data, to recompile it, or to develop original data processing programs. Measurement results can easily be transformed into a text file; this means you can directly use your PC's spreadsheet software and graphic processing software to display data gathered by the LA-910. Flexible graphic function allows a variety of display formats, including overlapping curves and expansion of displayed range The Overlap Display allows you to select on-screen display of several different types of particle-size distribution curves. The Expanded Display makes possible the expansion of a desired range of particle diameters within the particlesize distribution graph. Other valuable functions include the ability to set spacing between particular particle diameters and shift the orientation of the graph's axis as needed. All these functions and more give you the flexibility for exactly the type of on-screen presentation you need for each different measurement job. If the particles are large, the scattering is concentrated in the forward direction; conversely, if the particles are small, the scattering is in all directions. Therefore, to measure larger particles, data on the scattered light intensity of a small angle is needed; to measure smaller particles, data on the intensity of a large angle is needed. To measure the distribution of small-angle scattered light intensity from the sample particles, the LA-910 uses a condenser lens to condense the light on a ring-type detector. For larger-angle scattered light intensity, detectors are located at the side and rear, as shown. From the angular distribution of the scattered light intensity, the Mie scattering theory is used to calculate the particle-size distribution. In addition, it is known that the shorter the wavelength of the irradiated light, the smaller the diameter becomes of particles that can be measured.asa consequence the LA-910 has expanded the measurable range by using a short wave length tungsten lamp in addition to the He-Ne laser beam. 9 A full range of upgrade options means greater versatility, efficiency, and productivity Automated control and dilution of samples the Reservoir Unit The LA-910 with the Reservoir Unit option automatically injects the right amount of dispersant into the sample until it is diluted to the proper concentration. It employs an auto-cycle (1) agitation, (2) ultra-sonic dispersion, (3)circulation, and (4) measurement. Auto-sampler Continuous, non-stop measurements the Auto-Sampler & the Reservoir Unit A further system upgrade, including both the Auto-Sampler and the Reservoir Unit, can make continuous, non-stop measurements of up to 24 samples, with automatic processing of the resulting data. All you have to do is put in the sample and instruct the instrument to conduct the measurement sequence. This system features streamlined, efficient measuring. Measuring minute samples/retrieving and saving the sample the Fraction Cell & the Cell Holder The LA-910's standard flow-cell measures the sample as it circulates in a liquid state. For samples of costly materials that need to be saved after measurement, use the optional Fraction Cell and Cell Holder. This allows the measurement of minute quantities of sample without loss of the sample material. Precise measurement of dry powders the dry powder feeder A new dry powder feeder easily disperses cohesive samples for precise measurement of dry powders well into the sub-micron range. With the dry powder feeder installed, only the sample cell needs to be changed to convert from wet to dry, or dry to wet, measurement in less than 5 minutes. The dry powder feed system operation is fully controlled from the computer. 8
