3 1 General Description The Loctite UV Curing Wand System rapidly cures small areas of UV curable adhesives and coatings. The UV energy generated by the system can be directed at the UV curable adhesives by a flexible liquid light guide. UV exposure time is controlled by a shutter which is activated by the foot switch. Curing time is minimized by locating the end of the light guide as close to the UV curable material as possible, but no closer than 1/4 away. 2 UV Safety This unit is very safe to use if operated properly. The guidelines below should be closely followed to ensure protection from the ultraviolet light: 1. UV protective glasses with side shields should be worn at all times. 2. Do not operate the system without all covers installed, and do not defeat the cover interlock switch in an attempt to operate the system. 3. Do not operate the system without wand (light guide) installed. 4. Never operate the system without the light guide retaining set screw tightened. 5. Never look directly at the light exiting the light guide. 6. Never direct the light at any body part. All UV safety is the responsibility of the user, especially when operating the system in a nonstandard configuration. When in doubt about safety, consult a Loctite Technical Specialist at LOCTITE ( ). Warning: UV Energy is transmitted from the end of light guide. Protective eye wear with side shields are required. The eye wear shall meet ANSI Z80.3 & Z87.1 standards. 1

4 3 Specifications Power input: VAC, 50/60 Hz, 4 amps. Ultraviolet output (initial values for reference only): Measured with Loctite ZETA Meter 7020 (Part No ) radiometer with nanometer (UV-A) spectral range. Measured with Wand System having a new lamp and reflector, and a new light guide. Intensities = Single Wand 2.7 w/cm 2 ; Dual Wand 2.4 w/cm 2 per wand. Power Supply: 50 Watt, solid state, auto ranging. Lamp: 50 Watt short arc mercury, pre-focused in reflector. Lamp mounted vertically in reflector for longer life and reliable ignition. Quick change lamp - reflector assembly. Reflector: Elliptical, glass with dichroic coating. Single Light guide: 5mm x 1000mm liquid light guide. Dual Light guide: 2 x 3mm x 1000mm liquid light guide. Cooling: Filtered dual fan arrangement, one thermally controlled fan to maintain proper lamp temperature regardless of ambient temperature. Hour meter: Digital LCD, resettable. Unit Dimensions: Refer to the figures below. 2

5 4 Unpacking and Inspection Unpack the system and inspect it for shipping damage. Report damages, if any, to freight carrier. Refer to the list of supplied parts listed below and compare to the contents. Report any missing parts to Loctite Customer Service department at LOCTITE ( ). Save packaging for safe storage or future shipping. The package includes the following items: (1) UV Curing Unit (1) Foot Switch (1) Power Cord (1) Light Guide (either single or dual ) (1) UV Safety Glasses (1) Instruction Manual 5 Installation and Operation The Loctite UV Curing System will arrive fully assembled. All that is required is to plug in the light guide, power cord and foot switch. The system should be installed in a clean location that allows a 12 clearance from the back of the system. This will allow adequate airflow around the system for proper cooling. Caution: Be sure UV glasses are being worn. To energize system, turn power switch to on position. Wait 2-3 minutes for lamp to come to full power. The system is now ready to use. The shutter operation of manual or timed mode can be selected by the selector switch on the front panel. With the selector switch on manual, the shutter will remain open as long as the foot switch is depressed. With the selector switch on timed, the shutter will remain open for the preset time upon depressing the foot switch. The shutter timer can be preset for UV exposure time from 0. 1 seconds to 99.9 seconds. When curing a UV product, position light guide end at least 1/4 from material being cured. Locating light guide end too close to the Product can cause light guide end to become cloudy from vapors coming off curing adhesive. This cloudiness can reduce UV output by as much as 50%. Loctite recommends when not using the light guide, that you place end of light guide into the holder located on the lower right-hand side of the front panel. This reduces the chances of scratching the end of the light guide. 3

6 6 Maintenance The Loctite UV Curing System is designed to operate with minimum maintenance. Loctite recommends the maintenance schedule below to keep the system in peak operating condition: - Clean or replace fan filters every 4 months or as required. Wash with warm water and detergent. Let dry before installing. To purchase new fan filters, order Loctite P/N Clean light guide end monthly or as required with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free clean cloth. Remove heavy coatings of cured adhesive with a razor blade; then clean with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free clean cloth. - Replace lamp-reflector assembly every 800 hours or as required to maintain adequate intensity for curing process. See Section 7 for instruction on replacing lamp-reflector. Lamp Information Lamp life varies from lamp to lamp primarily due to different operating conditions and use patterns. The life of the lamp can be optimized by minimizing the number of times that it is turned on and off. It is recommended that once the lamp is started, it should be left on throughout the course of the work shift. The hour meter, located on the front panel, records the accumulated time that the lamp is on. The hour meter can be reset by inserting a small screwdriver into the hole labeled reset and depressing the switch inside. CAUTION: NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT LIGHT EXITING LIGHT GUIDE. NOTE: LIGHT EXITING THE SAFETY WINDOW ON THE TOP OF THE UNIT IS VISIBLE BUT IS NOT HAZARDOUS. 4

7 7 Lamp/Reflector Replacement Unplug electrical cord from system. Allow lamp to cool 5 minutes or until lamp is cool. Remove (4) thumbscrews, two on each side, to lift off cover. Unplug lamp lead wires. Loosen (2) thumbscrews holding upper Teflon bar 1/2 turn each (see Fig. 1 below). Lift Teflon bar to 45 degrees. Remove lamp-reflector assembly. Reverse procedure above to install lamp-reflector assembly; be sure to align notch on reflector rim with tab on mounting plate. Reset hour meter by inserting a small screwdriver into the hole labeled Reset and depressing switch inside. Thumbscrews Fig. 1 5

8 8 Adjusting Dual Wand for Max Output Objective Balance the UV output from the two light guides of the Loctite Part No dual wand. Tools Needed 5/64 inch hex key. UV radiometer as described on page 9. Setup 1. Orient the dual wand input end which plugs into the 5/8 inch opening on the UV Curing Unit as shown in Fig. 2 on page 7 (light guide window horizontal). 2. Insert the wand end into the UV Curing Unit. 3. Tighten the set screw so that there is a light friction drag on the wand as it is rotated. 4. Select the 3mm Wand Adapter provided with the Zeta Meter This locates the output end of the light guide a set distance from the radiometer sensor. 5. OBSERVE UV SAFETY PRECAUTIONS OUTLINED ON PAGE 1. When testing or using only one of the dual light guides, the other shall be placed in the light guide holder. The light guide holder is located on lower right side of UV curing unit front panel. 6. Turn on electric power to the unit. 7. Set selector switch on front panel to TIMER position. 8. Set SHUTTER TIMER to 2 seconds. 9. Position one of the dual light guides in the radiometer Wand Adapter. 10. Place the other light guide into the light guide holder in the UV Curing Unit. 11. Press the radiometer start switch. 12. Observe all Safety Precautions. Then operate the wand unit start switch to open the shutter. 13. Release the radiometer start switch while the shutter is open. 14. Read and record the radiometer reading. 15. Position the second light guide in the radiometer Wand Adapter. 16. Place the first light guide in the light guide holder. 17. Press the radiometer start switch. 6

9 8 Adjusting Dual Wand for Max Output (cont.) 18. Observe all Safety Precautions. Then operate the wand unit start switch to open the shutter. 19. Release the radiometer start switch while the shutter is open. 20. Read and record the radiometer reading. 21. Compare the (2) radiometer readings. 22. If the lower reading is equal to or greater than 90% of the higher reading, the dual wand is aligned. 23. If the lower reading is less than 90% of the higher reading, rotate the end of the wand in the UV Curing Unit a small increment. 24. Take and compare another set of radiometer readings. 25. Continue until the lower reading is equal to or greater than 90% of the higher reading. 26. Tighten the set screw to lock the input end of the dual wand in position. Fig. 2 7

11 11 Radiometers The UV output of the lamp can be monitored by using a radiometer to measure the radiant power, (watts per square centimeters). All radiant power density measurements referenced in this manual were measured using a Loctite ZETA Meter 7020 (Part No ) radiometer which measures UV output over the nanometer (UV-A) spectral range. These readings should not be compared directly to measurements taken with other radiometers since large variations may exist in the response of different types of radiometers. Although Loctite uses the ZETA Meter 7020 radiometer, other radiometers can be used to monitor lamp life. The Loctite ZETA Meter 7020 radiometer (Loctite Part No ) is available as a drop ship item through your local Loctite Distributor. You can locate your local Loctite Distributor by calling

12 12 Loctite Equipment Warranty Loctite expressly warrants that all products referred to in this Instruction Manual under UV Curing Wand System (hereafter called Products ) shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship. Liability for Loctite shall be limited, at its option, to replacing those Products which are shown to be defective either in materials or workmanship or to credit to the purchaser the amount of the purchase price thereof (plus freight and insurance charges paid therefor by the user). The purchaser s sole and exclusive remedy for breach of warranty shall be such replacement or credit. A claim of defect in materials or workmanship in any Products shall be allowed only when it is submitted to Loctite in writing within one month after discovery of the defect or after the time the defect should reasonably have been discovered and in any event, within 2 (two) years after the delivery of the Products to the purchaser, excluding lamp and light guide. No such claim shall be allowed in respect of Products which have been neglected or improperly stored, transported, handled, installed, connected, operated, used or maintained or in the event of unauthorized modification of the Products including; where products, parts or attachments for use in connection with the Products are available from Loctite, the use of products, parts or attachments which are not manufactured by Loctite. Lamp is fully warranted for 500 hours for failure to ignite. The lamp is also warranted to produce 60% of the rated initial UV output at 500 hours. No Products shall be returned to Loctite for any reason without prior written approval from Loctite, Products shall be returned freight prepaid in accordance with Loctite instructions. NO WARRANTY IS EXTENDED TO ANY EQUIPMENT WHICH HAS BEEN ALTERED, MISUSED, NEGLECTED, OR DAMAGED BY ACCIDENT, OR IF THE SYSTEM IS USED TO UV CURE ANY LIQUID MATERIAL OTHER THAN LOCTITE CORPORATION PRODUCTS. EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESS WARRANTY CONTAINED IN THIS SECTION, LOCTITE MAKES NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCTS. ALL WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND OTHER WARRANTIES OF WHATEVER KIND (INCLUDING AGAINST PATENT OR TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT) ARE HEREBY DISCLAIMED BY LOCTITE AND WAIVED BY THE PURCHASER.
