When you submit developed film, artwork, digital media or other materials to UPHOTO, that constitutes an AGREEMENT by you that any damage or loss caused by us, which includes negligence or any other fault by UPHOTO, will entitle you only to replacement with like amount of comparable media, if available. Except for such replacement, the acceptance of developed film, digital files or other materials by UPHOTO is without other warranty or liability, expressed or implied, and recovery for incidental or consequential damages are excluded. UPHOTO shall not be liable for any losses, damages or expenses, whether direct or indirect, due to or caused by delays in delivering the processed or printed product of UPHOTO to the customer. 2

Photographers and businesses with photographic needs have found our imaging services to be among the finest available anywhere. We work hard to maintain our commitment to the highest quality standards. After more than twenty three years at our Route one retail location, Uphoto has completed it s move to a smaller non-retail location in Beltsville. We will continue to offer clients the same high quality printing, framing and finishing services that they have come to expect. Although many customers will be accessing our services through our on-line order interface and have their finished work shipped back to them, local pickup and personal consultation will still be available by appointment. So when you need to see us in person, just give us a call. You can reach us through our automated receptionist during regular hours or leave us a message after hours and we will return your call as soon as we can. We look forward to working with you from our new facility! Terms of Sale / Deposits All orders picked up at our shop are due C.O.D. payable by cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or Debit card. A 50% deposit will be required on orders over $100. Projects requiring special handling, specialty materials or third party delivery must be pre-paid in full before any work is started. Mail orders must be prepaid by check, credit card or PayPal. A service charge of $30.00 will be assessed on all returned checks. We will not be responsible for orders unclaimed after 30 days. Service Times Our goal is to complete your order as quickly as possible while maintaining our high quality standards. The delivery times listed in each section are estimated, based on average service times, and work loads. Please mention a specific deadline which must be met when your order is placed. In some cases, open lab or rush premium charges might be required to meet deadlines. During seasonal peak times, some orders may encounter unavoidable production delays. Order Change Fee / Cancellation Fee If work has not been started on an order, you may change or cancel it without penalty, except in cases where materials have been specially ordered for your project. If the order has been completed prior to the requested change, the full cost of the work will be charged in addition to the requested changes. Please note that order changes can cause delivery delays. Partially completed orders will be billed only for the portion that has been finished. Minimum Order Charge A minimum order charge of $3.00 applies to most orders. Selected services may have higher minimum order fees. Rush Service and Open Lab Many services are available on a rush basis, including many while-you wait printing services. Rush times and availability vary by service type, and options will be listed in each section. If rush charges are required, a minimum charge of $10.00 will be applied and a 50% deposit is required for ALL rush work. During seasonal peaks, some rush services may not be available. Standard rush service is limited to regular production hours. Open lab charges of $50 per hour will apply to orders requiring after-hours or weekend production time. Before making rush delivery commitments, please check with us to verify that delivery of the required service will be available. Reorders Because of the variations inherent to all photo processes, reprints from a previous order may not precisely match prints previously made. If you require a very close match and can provide a guide print, we will do our best to match as close as possible to your sample. Be aware that when guide prints are made on different paper brands, surfaces, alternate print methods or scanned from originals it might not be possible to achieve a perfect match. While great care is exercised in completing your work, we cannot be responsible for the cost of remakes due to omitted or inadequate instructions or lack of necessary color or density guides. Remake Policy Our goal is to produce the highest quality work and we take great care in the completion of every order. On the rare occasion that an order needs to be remade, it is essential that the undamaged work is returned with the original work order, source materials, and a written explanation of the desired correction. Requests for remakes at NO CHARGE must be received within TEN DAYS of receipt of the original order, otherwise the remade order will be charged the regular fee. 4 RAW Conversion & Image Correction RAW Conversion and Image Correction Take advantage of the security and extended exposure latitude and color correction range RAW shooting provides, without the ordeal of correcting and processing by yourself. We can free the photographer from the time consuming burden of working in RAW (well, most of it - you still have to download your own memory cards!). We will professionally optimize and color/density correct your RAW files, perform a rough edit (crop and/or rotate) and convert them into hires JPEG s, ready for printing or uploading to your Preview Gallery, or other online gallery. We can also prepare images to your specification for delivery to your client on CD, DVD or USB flash drive. If you are more comfortable shooting JPEG s, we can often provide dramatic improvements to your uncorrected images with this service. We also will store your enhanced files for up to one year on our server at no additional cost. A BIG advantage of having us correct your RAW or JPEG images is that they can qualify for our Ready-to-Print option if your order is created and submitted through our On-Line Order System or Presentation Gold Windows PC software. Please provide your RAW or JPEG files on a USB drive, CD, or DVD. We have workstations available in our customer service area if you prefer to download your images directly to our in-house server. 11 What is a Giclée Fine Art Print? A Giclée (gee-clay) is a fine art inkjet print produced to exacting standards on archival media substrates. The process was originally pioneered in the early 1990 s by rock legend Graham Nash and his business associate Mac Holbert. Their team formulated new pigment based inks to replace the existing dye based technology of the Iris 3047 printer and in doing so, they ushered in a new era of fine art print making. They coined the term Giclée to distinguish the new archival process from the non-archival inkjet and photographic prints available at that time. The word Giclée, was derived from the two French words "le gicleur" meaning "nozzle" and "gicler" meaning to spray or squirt a liquid, which described the function of the print head used in the Iris 3047 printer. Today, the term Giclée suggests a superior elevation in the fine art printmaking craft. Images are produced on certified inkjet printers that utilize special pigment based inks. Printing is available on a variety of archival fine art papers or Canvas that will provide fade resistance of at least years or more under average indoor display conditions. When these techniques are combined with our superior craftsmanship, you will find that our Giclée process provides better color accuracy and permanence than most other means of fine art reproduction. Giclée s are advantageous to artists who find it is unfeasible to mass produce their work, but still want to create limited editions of their art. Once an image is finalized and archived, reproductions can be made with minimal effort and cost. The up-front expense of mass production is greatly reduced and printing can be done on demand. Additionally, Giclée prints can be easily reproduced to almost any size and on different media, freeing the artist to be able to customize prints for a specific client or purpose. Multiple sizes of an edition can be produced to fit marketing needs. Giclée Fine Art Printing We digitally capture your original art using a proprietary method of creating multiple high resolution scans or digital captures that are combined seamlessly to produce a digital file of exceptional resolution and sharpness. We can also scan client supplied large format transparencies or negatives with good results. The second step is image correction and manipulation. This is where we unwanted artifacts from the scan or digital capture. Flaws in the original can be corrected, and local color and density corrections to specific areas can be made. We strongly encourage artist input during this part of the process as it will greatly improve the chances of producing the best reproduction. This is also where we establish final size, border configurations, and select the output print media. Once the artist is satisfied with the soft proof on the computer workstation, we make a Giclée proof print on the selected media to verify the corrections made in the collaborative setup process. Slight variations sometimes occur between the computer s screen and the printer and media, and this is the best way to find out if anything needs to be changed. It may be necessary to make a new proof after any corrections are made. Once final approval is given, we ask the artist to sign the back of the selected proof, and this will be held for color match to the final print. Fine Art Studio Giclée Setup Fee Five-Seven Days Small Format Studio Giclée Reproduction $35.00 For standard size originals 11x17 or smaller that can be captured on our flatbed scanner. Price includes image capture of one un-framed standard size flat original, basic image clean-up, color correction and artist consultation of up to 1/4 hour. Finalized images are archived for future use. Medium Format Studio Giclée Reproduction $50.00 For originals larger than 11x17 that can be captured in multiple passes on our flatbed, but no larger than 16 x24. Price includes image capture of a single un-framed original with basic image clean-up, color correction and artist consultation of up to 1/4 hour. 19 Digital Workflow & Photo Tips Incorporating good color management practices into your workflow will enable you to create high quality digital products for your clients. We have even created a section of Photo Tips written by our own staff, our clients and other leading photo professionals that may provide valuable insight into digital equipment, exposure control and lighting, color management, file manipulation and other areas of interest. We encourage you to explore our website and provide us with feedback so that we may improve your experience. We are here to assist you by sharing our many years of experience and answering your technical questions. Monitor Calibration This is by far, the single most important component of your color correction workflow. An improperly or non calibrated monitor will only frustrate you and result in costly remakes. Calibration is achieved by using a USB plug-in measuring device and software package. Affordable monitor profiling kits, such as the SPYDER or COLORMUNKI will save you time, money and frustration. Using laptop computers can be challenging in general due to the lack of screen controls that will allow proper calibration. Using an external monitor should provide the most reliable results. We recommend that you visually confirm the accuracy of your calibrated monitor to our output devices by downloading our Target Print File from our website. We will supply you with a free Target Print sample which will enable you to reliably soft-proof your own images. The following procedure assumes you are using Adobe Photo Shop, but can be adapted to other programs. Just follow these steps: Launch PhotoShop and open the target print file on your computer. You can fine-tune your monitor screen controls (contrast, red, green and blue) to match the reference print. It is important that the print is viewed under an ambient light source that is similar to daylight color balance. When the print & monitor are in close agreement, you should send us a test image of a corrected file for printing. Once you receive the new print, compare it to the screen image and fine-tune the screen if necessary. Keep in mind that the images may not EXACTLY match, rather they should closely approximate each other. Once this has been completed and the screen and print are in close agreement, the prints we make for you in the future should be fine. ICC Profiles Call Toll Free Our Noritsu QSS-3202 PRO photographic imaging equipment works in the srgb color space. Our Canon Pro 4000 printer can use either Adobe 1998 or srgb for Studio Giclee s. Output profile mismatches of these two different spaces can produce unexpected results, so be sure to submit your files in the appropriate space for the desired output type. We suggest Perceptual for the rendering intent for both color spaces. srgb matches the working color space used in most computer monitors, except for a few very high end units can that can display images in Adobe For standard photo printing, we suggest that your default working color space is set to srgb. Although files created in Adobe 1998 can be converted to srgb when needed, this will only slow production time with no direct benefit when printing to our Noritsu photo equipment. As stated in a previous section, monitor calibration using a USB plugin device such as a SPYDER or COLORMUNKI is absolutely essential. Digital File Setup Requirements Although we can print any file format that can be opened in Photoshop, when ordering PRO photo prints, we request that you submit files as 8 bit srgb Level 10 or 11 Baseline Standard JPEG s at PPI output size. Files supplied in other formats may cause production delays and can incur additional handling charges when conversion is necessary. If you are ordering HDR Archival Luster, or Studio Giclee prints, TIF files at dpi are preferred. Please do not up-res files in Photo Shop for a higher DPI, as this will not significantly improve quality. File names should contain only letters, numbers, dashes and spaces, followed by the.jpg file extension. The use of any of the following has been proven to cause problems within our printing system and will delay your print order. It s highly desirable to keep file names as short as possible, for example JKW001.jpg is far better than Jim and Kathys wedding image_001.jpg since long file names may not display or print properly on the back of PRO prints. If you must submit RAW, DNG, PSD, or TIF files, please provide them on a CD, DVD or USB drive or transfer them to our FTP server. You will need to set up a transfer account first.
