5 MY MOTIVATION My art has been made in response to my discovery of the holocaust at 12 years of age. My response: to insist (for myself) on a moral imperative for art. Auschwitz, 1945 I knew then, from the example of Russian Suprematism, that seeing is guided by Vision. I understood that there was no new art for the new State, other than the art of the prevailing hegemony of Church and State.

6 MY MOTIVATION I realised that the art I was studying at NCAD was Anglo- Germanic anatomical art, i.e. the confusion of science and feelings, the art underpinning the hegemony. My response: to say Yes! to life. To say Yes! without assumptions of religious, mystical or arcane knowledge. Laocoön and his sons, Graphite and wash drawing. Al 13 (RosieRed) 6/7/15. 7 MAYNOOTH PAINTING: GALILEO My proposal: An Al 13 painting to be called Galileo. Measuring approx. 40 high x 10 wide (subject to site survey) acrylic paint on aluminium ground scattered up the wall then bolted together and attached to the wall by brackets. 9 The idea (not an example) AL 13 s IN THE CONTEXT OF PAINTING Painting traditionally consists of a figure and ground. Al 13 s eschew middle ground to create a sensation of intensified alienation i.e. alienation from the mother- child body. 1 Al 13 s minimise object- hood and exaggerate surface, placing the viewer in the primary place as subject. 1: See Melanie Klein

10 AL 13 s FORM Enlarged, un- gestured brush strokes to brush aside the middle ground and to alienate the figure (viewer) from the painted ground. 11 GALILEO GALILEI Galileo created a new way of thinking about the nature of the world and how we ought to secure reliable knowledge of the world. He based his findings on direct observation. Thus began the exile of man from the centre of the universe. Galileo drawing of sunspots, 26 th July 1612.

12 POROUS PLANE The following two slides illustrate my testing of the nature of flatness as it is experienced, i.e. it only appears to be flat when it is clearly seen to be not flat. This led to my creation of Folded/Unfolded, 1970, the source of all my work since then. Folded/Unfolded, 1970

15 AL 13 A SYNTHESIS The enlarged, un- gestured brush strokes in Al 13 s synthesize the planar line invented by Cezanne, the force field rhythms of Van Gogh s late painting and the allover continuous surface of Rodin s sculpture. Van Gogh Cezanne Rodin
