1 AMIRUL ALWI THE HEART OF MATHEMATICS
2 A M I R U L A L W I THE HEART OF MATHEMATICS
3 THE HEART OF MATHEMATICS Project Room was established in Project Room was initially created by G13 gallery as a platform to highlight new faces to the industry. Project Room also promotes new innovative direction of those who wishes to diversify their arts by venturing into new methods and materials. Project Room is in its sixth installment and G13 gallery is proud to present Amirul Alwi, a Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) graduate who is based in Johor. The Heart of Mathematics was inspired by a book written by a Mathematician from United States, Edward Burger. The book discloses mathematical ideas for the beginners and laymen alike. The artist wishes to demonstrate his love towards mathematic and share some of the mesmerizing idea from his literature reference by visualizing them. The Heart of Mathematics just like the title implied, explores the endless possibility of pattern creation that can be achieved through simple mathematical theorem. The geometric pattern is derived from basic geometry and multiplication table. The artworks pay homage to Fibonacci sequence, Mathematics of The Tree of Life and the bisection of Ying and Yang. To Amirul, the never-ending rotation which was demonstrated through his works intrinsically points out to the universe and how natural every living thing is. Everything is rotating in each own course. Some would cross path, some would not. However, holistically and subconsciously forming a pattern. That is what you can pretty much expect from Amirul Alwi s artwork. The Heart of Mathematics will be featuring eight artworks from Amirul Alwi which will be displayed in a manner of wall piece sculpture. Among the material used for this project is oil color, emulsion, stainless-steel nail and knitting thread on wood. The artist feels that it is effective for the audience to witness his artwork in three-dimensional rather than creating a mere illusion through painting. The Heart of Mathematics is a showcase exhibition by Amirul Alwi, a program by Project Room. Written by Heikal Taki ARTIST STATEMENT The heart of a human being is a vital organ for blood circulation. It is one of the main organs in our body. In other word, heart can be seen as the spirit, inner nature, character, feeling and soul of a man. Mathematic is related to science through the study of algebra, geometry, calculus or anything which concerns with the study of number, quantity, shape and space. Their interrelationships between them are materialized by using a specialized notation. In fact, mathematic is a basic thing before this universe even exists. What I am trying to demonstrate here is how a visual pattern can be made based on the movement of the rotation numbers at each point of a circular shape and geometry. I study about the language on numbers which has its own different infinity pattern. I have conducted a few experiments on numerous numbers like the numbers on Fibonacci sequence, which are numbers order from number one, multiplication tables of two, three and four, and on other numbers as well. In conjunction with the theme of my artworks which is Infinity, I choose number as my subject matter because they are best described as infinity. From the point of the universe, number zero represents nothing. Meanwhile, number one is a starting number. In Islam, number one is best defined the oneness of God. According to Big Bang Theory, there is an effort to explain what happened at very beginning of our universe. Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that our universe did in fact have a beginning. Therefore, there was nothing that comes before the universe and then there is our universe. After the beginning of something, it produces mass. In other instances, the mass can be viewed as number. In the context of shape, I choose basic geometry shape which is reproduced through circular shape. This is because circle represents no starting point or ending and it is parallel with meaning of infinity. Based on circular shape, I have developed it from the point of enlargement and interception with the other shapes. Hence, my findings has resulted to come across many Sacred Geometry such as Metatron Cube, Yin Yang, Tree of Life, Flower of Life, Hexagon, Square, Rectangle and many others. So, I combine these basic elements of the universe which is number and shape into an artwork that have its own meaning based on number, shape, symbol, pattern and typography number. - AMIRUL ALWI

13 ABOUT PROJECT ROOM Project Room is a newly allocated space which disguises as a golden opportunity project themselves into a bigger league in the art industry through their thought-provoking innovations and breakthroughs. Its mission is to promote and support the most interesting and significant contemporary art from the region. AMIRUL ALWI (b. 1992), born in Johor. I am graduated Fine Art at University Science Malaysia. Specializing primarily in painting. With a constant eagerness to gain knowledge and experience, as well as an eye for visual aesthetics. Majority of my works tended to be between two characters like positive and negative, day and night, construct and destroy, hard and soft, organic and geometric, control and uncontrol. Amongst them include working in painting, mixed-media, drawing, photography and video installation. I always believe that art has a capacity to help us unite, change, think, feel, reflect, share and live.
