Answer two questions from one topic only. Do all rough work in the answer book. Cross through any work that you do not want to be marked. Information The marks for questions are shown in brackets. The maximum mark for this paper is 60. You are not obliged to illustrate your answers unless the question specifically requires you to do so, but you may make diagrams, drawings, etc., if these help you to answer the questions more clearly. You will be marked on your ability to: use good English organise information clearly use specialist vocabulary where appropriate. 2 2 TOPIC 1 ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN THIRTEENTH-CENTURY AND FOURTEENTH CENTURY EUROPE Answer two questions. Question Discuss the function of three religious paintings from the thirteenth century and/or fourteenth century. Question Analyse three sculptures from this period and discuss the relationship between form and meaning in each. Question Discuss the relationship between form and function in three thirteenth-century and/or fourteenth-century buildings. Question Analyse how patronage affected the appearance of three works of art from this period.

3 3 TOPIC 2 ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN SIXTEENTH-CENTURY EUROPE Answer two questions. Question What do you understand by the term Mannerism when applied to art and architecture during this period? Discuss three examples in your answer, at least one of which must be from architecture. Question Analyse three sixteenth-century religious paintings and discuss how patronage affected the appearance of each. Question Discuss the relationship between form and meaning in three sixteenth-century sculptures, each containing two or more figures. Question Analyse three sixteenth-century buildings and discuss the Renaissance characteristics of each. Turn over U

4 4 TOPIC 3 ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY EUROPE Answer two questions. Question Analyse and interpret three eighteenth-century paintings that depict battle and/or warfare. Question Analyse and interpret three eighteenth-century works of art that depict the female nude. Question Discuss how character and identity are conveyed in three male or in three female portraits from this period. You may choose your examples from painting and/or sculpture. Question Analyse three eighteenth-century buildings and discuss the Neo-Classical characteristics of each.

5 5 TOPIC 4 ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BETWEEN 1900 AND 1945 Answer two questions. Question Examine and interpret three abstract paintings and/or non-objective paintings produced during this period. Question Analyse three works of art and demonstrate how they are associated with Fauvism or Surrealism. Question Analyse and interpret the use of ready-made objects and/or found objects in three works of art produced during this period. Question Analyse three commercial buildings and/or civic buildings and/or institutional buildings from this period. Select your examples from at least two countries. END OF QUESTIONS
