2 Chapter 2 : Arnason & Mansfield, History of Modern Art (Paperback), 7th Edition Pearson For undergraduate course in Modern Art, Origins of Modernism, Art Since, Contemporary Art and other course focusing on art in the 20th century. Long considered the survey of modern art, this engrossing and liberally illustrated text traces the development of trends and influences in painting, sculpture, photography and architecture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Long considered the survey of modern art, this engrossing and liberally illustrated text traces the development of trends and influences in painting, sculpture, photography and architecture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Retaining its comprehensive nature and chronological approach, it now comes thoroughly reworked by Elizabeth Mansfield, an experienced art historian and writer, with refreshing new analyses, a considerably expanded picture program, and a more absorbing and unified narrative. Important background information is summarized in an easy-to-read format. Ruskin trial establishes the keynote for a complex history of modern art. Chapter 2 A style as well as a way of understanding the world, Realism is presented as one of the theoretical foundations of modern art. Impressionism is characterized as both indebted to and departing from Realism, a shift explored in relation to contemporary history as well as aesthetics. The significance of the female nude as a persistent subject of modern art is now addressed. Chapter 3 The diverse styles and practices classified under Post-Impressionism share a tendency to favor subjective artistic responses to the world as opposed to the objectivity often commended by Realism. Chapter 4 Modern architecture is seen as emerging from diverse approaches to design. Popular revivalist tendencies in architectural design are addressed, and an expanded account of the Arts and Crafts movement is provided. The chapter concludes by focusing on the technical innovations and aesthetic ambitions that gave rise to the skyscraper. Art Nouveau attempts to synthesize the aesthetic freedom of Symbolism with functionalism. The synthesis pursued by Art Nouveau is described as exemplary of modernism. Chapter 6 The exciting formal innovations of Fauvism liberate fully color, line, and form from serving documentary ends. Primitivism is now explained in greater detail as a cultural as well as political phenomenon. The political, economic, and cultural conditions particular to Germany in the early 20th century are also cited as crucial for the character of Expressionist art. The Italian Futurists applied the formal lessons of Cubism to their ideology of ardent nationalism, just as some Russian Constructivists found in the visual language of Cubism a means of expressing a new, Revolutionary, and egalitarian aesthetic. Chapter 11 World War I caused a rupture in the European art world leading progressive artists to seek new means for expressing their outrage, confusion, and despair through Dada and the New Objectivity. Chapter 12 The artistic response to World War I is further explored in a chapter devoted to the Paris scene. Chapter 13 De Stijl is now presented in a single chapter. This allows for a coherent discussion of de Stijl ideas and how they affected all media. Chapter 14 Like the de Stijl movement, the Bauhaus was founded the principle of arts integration in pursuit of a unified aesthetic. This chapter now focuses exclusively on the Bauhaus, taking readers from its inception under the guidance of Walter Gropius, through its rise as a model for arts production and education, to its dissolution under the Nazi regime. The influence of former Bauhaus instructors, especially on the emergence of modernism in the United States, brings the chapter to a close. Chapter 16 Modern art produced in America prior to World War II is considered not only terms of its relationship to European styles and innovations, but also in relation to contemporary events. The trial of Sacco and Vanzetti, for instance, is now discussed alongside relevant works by Ben Shahn. All artworks discussed at length are now illustrated. The import of Surrealism and its attempt to reveal the workings of the unconscious is also positioned as an important influence for Abstract Expressionism. These formal and theoretical influences are explored in relation to political and economic conditions in post-war America. Recognition of the social and political relevance of both movements has been strengthened. Chapter 21 This chapter on the International Style and the expressive, sculptural architecture of modernist designers like Wright, Saarinen and Breuer has been updated and features additional works by Mies, Gropius, Wright, Stirling and Gowan, Terragni, as well as many new color illustrations. Chapter 22 An entire chapter is now devoted to Conceptual Art. This chapter also introduces protest and activist art, with an enhanced section on feminist art. Among Page 2

3 artists included in the new edition are Lee Losano and Louise Lawler. Works that receive sustained commentary are illustrated whenever documentation exists. Chapter 23 This chapter on Postminimalism, like those on Minimalism and Conceptualism, continues the new organization of History of Modern Art by presenting contemporary art thematically rather than simply by decade. Here, readers now encounter the various movements through which artists responded to the seemingly antithetical challenges of Minimalism and Conceptualism. Chapter 24 Postmodernism-in all its myriad forms-has been newly reorganized into a single chapter. To help explicate this movement, ideas such as poststructuralism, deconstruction, and deconstructivism are explained. Chapter 25 Although the revised version of History of Modern Art generally takes pains to integrate discussions of various media, this chapter now focuses exclusively on painting. The tendency of Minimalism and Conceptualism tended to shy away from easel painting; the resurgence of this technique in the s and s, therefore, receives special attention. Chapter 26 Since the critical intervention of Postmodernism, contemporary artists have increasingly taken the art world itself as the subject of their work. This newly reorganized chapter considers how artists are renegotiating modernism through works that confront the various institutions and traditions of avant-garde art production, display, and acquisition. In addition to tracing the effects of postcolonial theory on artists and audiences, this chapter considers how modernism has been de-centered. No longer a form of cultural expression dominated by Europe and North America, modernism and its offshoots, like Postmodernism has become a means by which non-western and developing countries can interrogate Western social and cultural assumptions. He began his professional life in academia, teaching at Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and the University of Hawaii. It is an excellent source book for students studying the late nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. It is clearly written and works toward thorough consideration of a topic rather than superficial analysis. The best text for a course on Modern Art. As well, I am pleased with the increased quality of reproductions. Chapter 7 : History of Modern Art, 7th, Arnason, H. H. & Mansfield, Elizabeth C.
