April 2018 April Member Meeting Program Montpelier Art Center April 9, 7:00 pm On April 9, 2018, Kathy Daywalt will demonstrate ways to make a start with YUPO; using the start to inspire; adding richness and texture to a composition with artistmade stamps and found objects to create patterns; using linear elements to tighten a composition and adding unexpected color notations. The advantages and disavantages of YUPO will be discussed. It promises to be an interesting evening. Ms. Daywalt is an accomplished artist with many years experience in a variety of mediums, including watercolor, gouache, watercolor crayons and pencils, linocut prints and oil. Most recently she has been studying the effects of watercolor on YUPO, a synthetic material. Her interest in figures and pattern is evident in these recent works. Here her experience with linocut and artist made stamps has helped her create richly textured, patterned paintings. Kathy says: I find figures to be continually interesting and beautiful. Bold color thrills me subtle color and nuance draw me in to see what is there. I enjoy the give and take that water media provides...sometimes, I tell them what to do but sometimes, they tell me. Kathy s work is held in private collections from New York to California. Her work has been included in numerous juried exhibitions; most recently LAG s 49th Open where her painting The Favored One was awarded First Place. Please see her website, www. 3 Member News Anne Harter has moved to 3210 Powder Mill Rd., Adelphi, MD and has a new phone number is Anne welcomes phone calls and visitors. Carol Leo will have paintings on display and for sale at the Sips at C Street Café until March 31. The address is 24 C Street, Laurel MD. April Rimpo is very excited to announce her painting The Orator was selected for the Missouri Watercolor Society s 2018 International Exhibition. It will be held in Quingdao, China during June and July. During April she has a triptych, Worth the Price?, on exhbiti at Pocono Arts Council s ARTSPACE Gallery as part of the Earth Speaks IV Exhibition. During May April s painting, Percussion: A Serious Business, is in the 41st Southern Watercolor Society Annual Juried Exhibition at ArtCenter Manatee in Bradenton, Florida. Plein Air and Indoor Painting Events Our February paint-in from a live model on Saturday, February 24, was a very productive event as 13 LAG artist met in the Carriage House and drew and painted for three hours. Our model was highly skilled and everyone marveled at her ability to stay still and to return to the same position after each break. We started with four five-minute gesture drawings and then advanced on to the main pose, which she held for two and a half hours (with breaks). Comments included this was the first time I have done this since college, very enjoyable experience, we will have to do this again. At the end of the session participants lined up their works on the table and there was a gasp of admiration as we observed the paintings that had been accomplished. The model 3 photographed the array of paintings and was very pleased with the experience. Thanks to all who participated, and we will have another live model session later this year. 4 Floral Gesture Workshop on March 31 We are happy to report the Jackie Saunders workshop is full, and we have two people on the wait list. Saturday, March 31, 2018, from 10 am through 4 pm at Riderwood Village, 3110 Gracefield Rd, Silver Spring, Maryland Learn about our next workshop on page 5. Exhibitions by Diane Shipley June 1-30 Patuxent Research Center National Wildlife Visitor Center, Laurel, MD. I will need approximately 30 pieces. Our display area will be six 6 x 6 panels. Paintings should be of wildlife, nature, and/or environmental conservation issues. No domestic animals. Guidelines are attached to the Entry Form on pages 7 and 8. Please follow them closely. July 2 August 15 - The Howard County Conservatory, Woodstock, MD. You may submit the same paintings that were displayed at Patuxent and we also will need many more nature-themed paintings, i.e., landscapes, animals, etc. We will need at least 60 paintings, possibly more depending on size. LAG Online Exhibits by John Cholod The latest LAG Online Exhibit theme is Melody. As always, you can post your own image to this exhibit (one per member) or you can send a jpg to me and I will post it for you. To login to the online gallery go to main.php the username and password follows the algorithm described in the Online Exhibit instructions. If you have forgotten or lost your copy, I can send the instructions to you - just ask for them. I look forward to seeing everyone s images. The more the merrier, so if you have never provided an image, please consider doing so. You can also provide images for the other three exhibits: Fire, Air and Earth. You must use a separate login for each exhibit so the image ends up in the right exhibit. If you send me images, please be sure to also provide the title, medium and size. Optionally, you can also provide price, and contact information, but based on what we learned from Kathryn Goldman, the Copyright Office will consider this a published work (made available for sale) and must be handled as such. October 18 December 15, 2018 Slayton House Gallery. It is a large space and we will again need lots of paintings. Please remember that I need help with hanging all shows. 6 Stamps, Stencils, & Canvas: Workshop with Jan Rowland Saturday, June 2 (10-4pm) at Montpellier Arts Center $30 LAG members ($40, non-lag members) Maximum 12 participants. Payment is required to reserve a place in the workshop. No refunds after May 5. Supply list will be ed to participants. A workshop of new ideas, new techniques and spontaneous discoveries! Stretch your creativity using gel plates and glass sheets with many layers of paint and textures. In the morning, we ll create textured papers and participants are requested to bring along texture producing objects, for example, stamps, stencils, lego sheets, netting, lace fabric, bubble wrap, leaves etc. Using many layers of paint you will create fun printed sheets of implied textures with an easy interactive process. Each printed paper will be as unique as the small painting that will be produced in the afternoon. It is up to your imagination! Mistakes are never made as it is all part of the creative process. Paper and card will be provided. To see some of her paintings visit About the Instructor: Jan Rowland is a former High School art teacher of twenty years. Her first love in art was for ceramics where textures could be created. However with time her passion turned to canvas and she found using texturized papers with harmonizing color combinations a stimulating start to innovative work. Another twenty years of experimentation with papers and paint techniques on furniture and canvas have led to a greater interest in textures - implied or real. 7 Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel, MD Exhibit Dates: June 1-30, 2018 Deadline to Enter: Friday, May 18 Drop off: Pick up: Friday, June 1-11:00 am 12:00 pm Saturday, June 30, 11:00 am 12:00 pm Specifications: All art work should be should feature wildlife, nature to increase public awareness of wildlife conservation and environmental issues, including endangered species. Guidelines are attached. Please limit the size of your pieces to a maximum of 30 in any direction. If matting and framing is needed on your art work, please be sure it is clean and the frame is in excellent condition and securely wired. No saw-tooth hangers. A frame is not needed if the sides of the canvas are finished. Art work must be appropriate for all ages. Paintings must be labeled with artist information on back (name, title, size, medium, and price). Up to three (3) pieces per artist will be accepted in order of receipt. I may increase that number if I find more are needed. The gallery does not handle sales, therefore no commission but a donation would be appreciated. All sales will be made individually. The gallery does not cover the art work with insurance. It is the artist s responsibility to pay sales tax.
