MARY CORSE Born in 1945 Berkeley, USA. Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA. American artist Mary Corse came to prominence in the 1960s during which time she was involved with southern California s Light & Space Movement. Her monochrome, minimalist paintings investigate materiality and perception. She employs a technique in which minute glass beads are mixed with acrylic paint, the effect of which works to illuminate the canvas, causing the tone and texture of the colours to shift as the viewer moves around the work. For Corse, the dynamic between the viewer and the painting plays a crucial role in activating the work. Corse s work has been exhibited extensively across the United States: a survey of her work is due to open at the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, USA) later this year, which will subsequently travel to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (California, USA). A further exhibition will be opening at Dia:Beacon (New York, USA) during the summer. Corse s work is in numerous international public and private collections, including the Blanton Museum of Art (Texas, USA); The University of Texas Austin (Texas, USA); the Fondation Beyeler (Basel, Switzerland); the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation Collection (Los Angeles, USA); the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, USA); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, (Los Angeles, USA); the Menil Collection (Texas, USA); the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, USA); the Museum of Contemporary Art (San Diego, USA); the Norton Museum of Art, (Florida, USA); the Orange County Museum (California, USA); the Seattle Art Museum (Seattle, USA); the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA); and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, USA). Untitled (White Multiband, Vertical Strokes), 1993 Glass microspheres in acrylic on canvas cm 02
SOLANGE PESSOA Born in 1961 in Ferros, Brazil. Lives and works in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Brazilian artist Solange Pessoa s work makes frequent reference to organic life, such as the tropical fauna and flora native to her home country. Pessoa s art elevates the organic, utilising materials such as hair, dry leaves, leather, oil, fat, wax, animal blood, minerals, powder, pigment, plants, roots, moss, seeds, and eggs. Her Botânica paintings evoke prehistoric cave paintings; the notion of time, intuition, and primordial memory guide her creative process. Over the past few years, Pessoa s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions including New Shamans (2016), High Anxiety (2016), and No Man s Land: Women Artists (2015) at the Rubell Family Collection (Miami, USA) and A Kingdom of Hours at Gasworks (London, UK). Examples of Pessoa s work are permanently displayed at the garden of the Museu de Arte da Pampulha (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and the Capela Nosso Senhor do Bonfim (Santa Bárbada, Brazil). In 1996 she was awarded a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation. Install shot from Frieze NY,
IDRIS KHAN Born in 1978 in Birmingham, UK. Lives and works in London, UK. Drawing on philosophical, art historical and theological references, Idris Khan s work explores themes concerning memory, creativity and the layering of experience. His practice employs the dual processes of creation and erasure, and the subsequent traces left behind by such erasure. Khan is best known for his stamp paintings, in which he employs rubber stamps to repeatedly print onto the surface words and phrases taken from key works or from his own poetry in a radial manner. The words gradually build up an increasingly dense surface in which the text itself becomes obscured and only those that appear on the very edges of the composition give some indication as to their original content. Khan s work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibitions at the Gothenburg Konsthall (Gothenburg, Sweden, 2011); the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto, Canada, 2010); the Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton (Paris, France, 2009) and K20 (Düsseldorf, Germany, 2008). His work has also been included in group shows at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, USA, 2015); the Bass Museum of Art (Miami, USA, ); the Tel Aviv Museum of Art (Tel Aviv, Israel, 2014); the Jeu de Paume, (Paris, France, 2013); The British Museum (London, UK, 2012) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA, 2010); amongst others. Khan has been appointed an OBE for services to Art in the Queen s Birthday 2017 Honours List. 5 CLINTON HILL Born 1922 in Payette, USA. Died in Clinton Hill was a leading, though often overlooked, figure in American Abstraction. A member of the New York School, Hill was a contemporary of artists such as Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler; he was mentored by John Ferren and assistant to Mark Rothko. Hill s work shares a likeness with Colour Field Painting, his style is characterised by a nuanced use of bright colours and the combining of plane and solid geometry. Exhibited for the first time, the works displayed at Frieze were created during an especially fervent period of creativity in the 1960s, during which the artist began working with acrylics on larger scale and started to incorporate Minimalist influences. Hill s work has been exhibited widely across the United States at highly regarded institutions such as The Whitney Museum (New York, USA); The Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA); the Santa Barbara Museum (California, USA); the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, USA); and the Smithsonian Institute (Washington. DC, USA). A major retrospective of the artist s work was staged at the Georgia Museum of Art (Georgia, USA) in Hill s work features in esteemed public collections including the British Museum (London, UK); the Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA); the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, USA); and the Victoria and Albert (London, UK), amongst numerous others. 13, 1965 Acrylic on canvas 05
KAZUYO KINOSHITA Born in 1939 in Kobe, Japan. Died in 1994 in Kobe, Japan. Japanese artist, Kazuyo Kinoshita came to prominence in the 1960s alongside the Gutai Art Association in Kansai, Japan. Her practice encompasses photography, drawing and painting, yet she devoted herself to painting entirely from the 1980s onward. Her work addresses questions concerning the inherent discrepancy between vision and perception. She is one of the few prominent female postwar artists in Japan. Kinoshita s work is featured in numerous prominent public collections in Japan such as that of The National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo, Japan); The National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto, Japan); The National Museum of Art (Osaka, Japan), Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art (Kobe, Japan), and Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art (Kyoto, Japan). 7 DAVID HOCKNEY Born in 1937 in Bradford, UK. Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA. A leading proponent of the British Pop Art Movement, David Hockney is one of Britain s most celebrated artists. His practice covers a diverse range of mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking and photography; yet Hockney is best known for his effervescent paintings which capture the vibrancy of 1960s bohemian life, the swimming pools, split level houses and lush foliage of the Hollywood Hills and Yorkshire s rural landscapes. The year 1966 saw Hockney become preoccupied primarily with line drawing and, by the end of the decade, he had become highly skilled at drawing with pen and ink. The work Artist s Father Reading at Table is a prime example from this period, which illustrates both the artist s technical dexterity and the idiosyncratic charm that he brought to the medium. Hockney s work has been exhibited extensively across the globe. He has been the subject of countless solo exhibitions at leading institutions such as Tate Britain s 2017 career retrospective, the largest exhibition ever staged by Tate and Hockney s most extensive show spanning six decades of his career. Other notable survey exhibitions of his work were held at the Royal Academy of Art (London, UK, 2012), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France, 1999) the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, 1988), and the Whitechapel Gallery (London, UK, 1970). In the Spring of 1977, David Hockney travelled for the first time to India. Whilst in Mumbai, the artist and his dealer John Kasmin checked into the Sunset Suite of the Taj Hotel. A former palace, the hotel is situated in the middle of the Lake Pichola and accessible only by boat. From his hotel room, Hockney made the pen and ink drawing View of Lake Palace Hotel, Udaipur. The work depicts the view of the City Palace visible from the hotel room window. A frequent traveller, Hockney often kept a visual diary of his trips, documenting various hotel rooms, lobbies and poolsides in his pen and ink drawings. Hockney s work has been exhibited extensively across the globe. He has been the subject of countless solo exhibitions at leading institutions such as Tate Britain s 2017 career retrospective, the largest exhibition ever staged by Tate and Hockney s most extensive show spanning six decades of his career. 9 LYNETTE YIADOM BOAKYE Born in 1977 in London, UK. Lives and works in London, UK. Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is one of the most prominent young British painters working today. Her oil paintings depict fictional subjects, predominantly black men and women set against dark backgrounds. The lack of fixed narrative encourages the viewer to interpret the painting as they please. Boakye s works are rooted in the history of painting itself and pay great attention to traditional formal considerations such as line, colour, and scale. Yiadom-Boakye has had several major solo museum shows, most recently at the Haus der Kunst (2015, Munich, Germany) and The Serpentine Gallery (2015, London, UK). She is currently included in the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA): A Story Within a Story, at the Röda Sten Konsthall (Gothenburg, Sweden). Her work is held in prominent institutional collections such as the Tate (London, UK) the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), the Miami Art Museum (Miami, USA), the Arts Council Collection (London, UK), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, USA), The Museum of Modern Art, (New York, USA), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco, USA), and the National Museum of African Art (Washington, USA). She was the recipient of the Pinchuk Foundation Future Generation Prize in 2012 and was short-listed for the 2013 Turner Prize. Parchment Flowers, 2017 Oil on canvas 09
JACK YOUNGERMAN Born in 1926 in St. Louis, USA. Lives and works in Long Island, USA. Taking inspiration from Henri Matisse s cutouts and the purity of Piet Mondrian s paintings, American artist Jack Youngerman s work marries the rigidity of geometric shapes with fluid organic forms to create vibrant painted compositions. During the late 1950s, his work was featured alongside such contemporaries as Jasper Johns and Frank Stella in the exhibition 16 Americans at the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA). Youngerman s work is included in noteworthy public collections such as the Art Institute of Chicago (Illinois, USA); the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, DC, USA); the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA); the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC, USA); the Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA); the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, USA),and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, USA). 11 BILLY AL BENGSTON Born in 1934 in Kansas, USA. Lives and works in Venice Beach, USA. American artist Billy Al Bengston was a pioneer of the 1960s California Finish Fetish and Light & Space movements. He is primarily known for his works incorporating the aesthetics of Californian Kustom Kar and motorcycle culture of the late 1950s. Working across painting and sculpture, Bengston s works can be characterised by their use of bright colours and psychedelic, mandala-like shapes with iconographic imagery derived from pop culture such as symbols, chevrons (in reference to the Vietnam War), the car and surfing culture of Venice Beach, and iris flowers. The artist frequently utilises industrial materials such as spray paint and lacquer applied to aluminium sheets. In 1980, Bengston established a second studio in Hawaii, at which time his subject matter and style shifted to the transcendent: meditative night skies, lunar reflections over water, and galactic moonscapes often viewed from the perspective of a surfboard floating in the ocean. Bengston s work is included in a number of important permanent collections including the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France); the Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA); the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA); the Chicago Art Institute (Illinois, USA); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (California, USA); the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, USA); the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, USA), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (California, USA). 12 TORBJØRN RØDLAND Born in 1970 in Stavanger, Norway. Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA. Norwegian photographer Rødland s images act as musings on the tactilility of the physical world. Working exclusively with analogue cameras, the artist creates portraits, still lifes and landscapes, which at once inhabit, de-familiarise and unsettle everyday, commonplace objects and scenes. His photographs incorporate tropes of commercial photography such as formal clarity to draw attention to the constructed nature of the image. Yet the scenes depicted are intended to engender unease in the viewer, highly sensory qualities are evoked by the depiction of wetness and stickiness. Rødland is currently the subject of a solo exhibition, The Touch That Made You, which opened at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery (London, UK) and then travelled to the Fondazione Prada, where it is currently on show (Milan, Italy). A further solo exhibition, Fifth Honeymoon is set to open at Kunsthall Bergen (Bergen, Norway) later this month. In 2016, the artist debuted the public installation Blue Portrait (Nokia N82) in collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, USA). Other exhibitions of note include solo shows at Kunsthall Stavanger, (Stavanger, Norway); Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (Hiroshima, Japan); P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (Long Island, USA); and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (Oslo, Norway). 13 MATTI BRAUN Born 1968 in Berlin, Germany. Lives and works in Cologne, Germany. German artist Matti Braun s work centers on the emergence and transformation of cultural traditions and cultural histories. The Untitled series is closely linked to the artist s earlier works that in turn explored traditional methods of textile production. The Patolas series saw Braun employ self-taught techniques to recreate traditional wall hangings and batik works. The silk paintings in the Untitled series are the result of the artist s continuous experiments in appropriation and reinvention of traditional handicrafts and textiles. Braun has exhibited widely across Germany and Europe. His work is included in several notable public collections, including the Bundeskunstsammlung Art Collection (Bonn, Germany), the Cranford Collection (London, UK), the Finnish National Gallery (Helsinki, Finland), and the KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki, Finland), the Kadist Foundation (Paris, France). He was the recipient of the Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für Bildende Kunst (Germany) in 2004 and the Peter Mertes Award (Germany) in Untitled, 2018 Silk, dye, powder-coated aluminium cm 13
