1 The Making of a Wedding Memory Quilt for Beth and Matt Nimmo by Barb Skeffington

2 An idea is born from a magazine article Quiltmaker Magazine March/April 09

3 At this point the bride only knows that I would like to make a wedding memory quilt for them and that I need to know the wedding colors. I chose to keep the block design and arrangement a surprise until the quilt was given to them. No promise of a completion date was made.

4 What Are The Wedding Colors? Black and white are easy but what color gold? Beth sent a scarf showing her choice of gold color. A variety of black and gold fabrics were chosen to make an appearance of texture changes, adding interest.

5 What Quilt Block to Use? It needs to have strips big enough for guests to

6 A Mock Up of the Block is Test the sizes of the strips and sew a sample to make sure everything goes together accurately. In this case there was an error in the block pattern on the length of the M rectangle.

8 Strips were cut and ironed onto freezer paper. 1/4 seam allowance is drawn on each strip using a blue water-erasable pen. (Afterthought: increase the seam allowance to 3/8.) Cut strips apart and put on a table at the reception with a number of.05 Pigma pens for signing. Guests choose the strip they want to use and write either horizontally or vertically on the strips.

10 After the Wedding It is time to ask the couple what size quilt would they like to have. Sew signed and unsigned strips together to make the needed blocks. Some blocks may not have any writing on them and these would most likely be placed in the outer rows of the quilt. Choose the setting and arrange the blocks so that the strips are all readable from one direction (top to bottom) when looking at the quilt. This avoids lots of twisting and

22 You are starting on an incredible journey through life. There will be bumps and bruises, rewards and dreams fulfilled. You will accomplish much together you wouldn t have done alone. Listen to each other, hearing the unspoken words. Support each other s endeavors. Remember this is your best friend. May this quilt cover you with warmth and love. The blocks were joined together with you in mind. They represent you joining your lives, bringing the love surrounding you together.

23 Wise Words for Newlyweds 1. Pray 2. Go to bed on time. 3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed. 4. Say No to projects that won't fit into your time schedule, or that will compromise your mental health. 5. Delegate tasks to capable others. 6. Simplify and unclutter your life. 7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too many.) 8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places. 9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together. 10. Take one day at a time. 11. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it. 12. Live within your budget; credit card bills should be paid in full each month. 13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc. 14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble. 15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday. 16. Remind yourself that you are not the general manager of the universe. 17. Get enough rest. 18. Eat right. 19. Get organized so everything has its place. 20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life. 21. Write down thoughts and inspirations. 22. Every day, find time to be alone. 23. Having problems? Try to nip small problems in the bud. 24. Make friends with good people. 25. Slow down. 26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good 'Thank you Jesus.' 27. Laugh. 28. Laugh some more! 29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all. 30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can). 31. Be kind to unkind people (they probably need it the most). 32. Sit on your ego. 33 Talk less; listen more. 34. Every night before bed, think of one thing you're grateful for that you've never been grateful for before. An Angel says, 'Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen tomorrow and it doesn't happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it does happen, you have to worry twice. Author unknown
