3 8-8 STAINLESS STEEL SURGICAL NEEDLES FEATURES AND BENEFITS 8-8 Stainless steel was developed in Japan specifically for the manufacture of end-drilled eyeless surgical needles. Highly advanced metallurgical technology was used to develop this superior austenitic steel. The material is tempered for optimum strength and flexibility. The 8-8 material has some superb qualities, which include a CLASS rating on rusting, which indicates that it does not rust at all, unlike most surgical steels. The material can be precisely sharpened on the points and cutting edges, and when polished, the material has a bright lustre. The extra-smooth finish dramatically reduces the resistance of the needle passage through tough and dense tissue. Silicone coatings are not used on 8-8 stainless steel needles; they do not need this lubricant. Advanced laser technology, capable of drilling needles as small as mm, is used on the end drilling of 8-8 stainless steel surgical needles. The complete range of SCIMITAR* sutures uses end drilled needles; none are the outdated channel-swaged type. SCIMITAR* has a comprehensive range of needle types, shapes and sizes to meet the surgeon s suture requirements. These are attached to 8 different material types. 8-8 needles are tempered to ensure flexibility and ductility. It is very important that a needle bends rather than breaks. Bending tests carried out on various round-bodied needles will clearly show the advantages of these 8-8 needles over other competitive surgical needles. The body of the needle is flattened to improve the grip of the needle holder and stabilize the needle. TAPER POINT NEEDLES TAPER POINT NEEDLES: (Epee* Cardiac) Fine body needles are used for cardiovascular and vascular surgery, where the needle wire diameter size is as close to suture thread diameter as possible. This is required when a very small hole needs to be made and minimum bleeding is required. In microsurgery very small needles of this type are used. TAPER POINT NEEDLES WITH A CUTTING TIP This needle has a tapered body with a sharpened cutting tip. Used on tough tissue where a cutting tip is required and a narrow-bodied needle desired. TAPER POINT NEEDLES WITH A BLUNT POINT (SN-Dolphin*) The needle has a round body with a rounded blunt point. These needles were designed for use on friable tissue, like the liver, and their use has been extended to cover accidental puncturing of surgical gloves, and needle stick. This gives the surgeon some added protection when working on Aids related patients. REVERSE CUTTING NEEDLES (Derma-cut*) The cutting edge is on the outer curve, used on tissue that is tough and difficult to penetrate. An additional honing process is carried out on needles used for plastic and cosmetic surgery. CONVENTIONAL CUTTING NEEDLES (Derma-cut*) These needles have two opposing cutting edges with a third on the inside curve of the needle. The body of the needle is flattened. MICRO-OPTIC* SPATULA NEEDLES: (Micro-Optic*) This needle is used in ophthalmic anterior surgery, where the needle needs to be thin and flat and very sharp, to ensure easy passage through tissue such as cornea and sclera. 5 PLAIN & CHROMIC CATGUT SUTURES FEATURES & BENEFITS High quality free-range beef serosa ribbons are selected for maximum uniform tensile strength. Enzymatic and mechanical cleaning ensures exceptionally high levels of collagen purity for optimal in vivo performance. The ribbons selected for chromic catgut sutures are treated prior to spinning with buffered chromium salt solution. This results in a dark brown suture with a predictable strength and an even uniform in vivo absorption. Plain catgut is a natural product and is pale yellow. Electronic tension controlled spinning, an exact humidity and temperature controlled drying process, combined with electronic gauging and high-speed centre polishing ensures a strong, extremely smooth and highly uniform suture. The electronically polished catgut, to tolerances of.mm, ensures an exact surface smoothness for great handling and smooth passage through tissue. This causes minimal trauma and creates dependable knot run down and knot strength. Available in sizes USP (6 metric) to USP 6/ ( metric), softened with glycerine. 16 VIAMAC* Pure Polyglycolic Acid, Coated, Braided Synthetic Absorbable Sutures FEATURES & BENEFITS Viamac* has the major advantage of being a pure polymer derived from Glycolic acid, finely braided and coated with the co-polymers of Glycolide, Lactide and Calcium Stearate. The coating (GLC66) bonds naturally with the thread, which reduces surface friction and glides through tissue with minimal trauma. The coating virtually eliminates chattering during tie-down, and the occurrence of knot locking. Precise knot placing is enhanced and the number of knots required to ensure full knot security is less than that required by co-polymer products. The knots snug down and hold fast. Viamac* gives maximum support through the critical first few days of wound support and has a higher level of support until the wound-healing process is complete, then rapid absorption takes place. The loss of tensile strength at all stages is very predictable. In vivo degradation of Viamac* occurs by hydrolysis. The pure PGA formulation gives a super-soft suture, which handles like silk. The inherent softness makes the suture virtually memory-free and reduces the effect of kinks and flat spots during the winding process. These fine strands are de-gummed prior to braiding, which retains the silk's body and elasticity, creating ideal handling characteristics, or hand, as it is commonly called. The manufacturing process produces a tightly braided silk strand with a uniform diameter resulting in a predictable and reliable high-tensile strength. The firm strand is uniformly coated with either silicon or a bees wax / paraffin wax combination. This process enhances the performance of the silk as it passes through tissue. There is greatly reduced memory and pigtailing in this superb monofilament suture. PRO-VEIN* polypropylene sutures are inert, supple and handle well. Owing to its controlled elongation, the knots lie flat and lock against each other, giving excellent knot security. There is minimal tissue drag and tissue trauma, which allows for easy placement and removal. PRO-VEIN* is as inert as steel, and because it is unaffected by tissue enzymes, the strands provide prolonged tensile strength, even in infected areas. 40 NYLON Monofilament Polyamide 6 Sutures FEATURES AND BENEFITS SCIMITAR* has a new dark blue Polyamide 6 nylon suture that is an exceptionally strong, smooth and pliable monofilament suture. The nylon is extruded to very stringent tolerances during the manufacturing process, giving it a uniform diameter along the complete length of the suture. The material is very smooth and pliable and does not require a lubricant, as it slides easily through tissue. The nylon, because of its smoothness and even diameter, makes knot-tying and placement very simple. The nylon is easy to remove after the wound-healing process is complete, which is very advantageous to the patient. The SCIMITAR* nylon's strength exceeds USP tensile strength and knot pull requirements by a huge percentage. This material has very high in vivo tensile strength and does not support bacterial growth across the cut line when closing skin or subcuticular layers. Nylon is only mildly irritating to tissue.
