Welcome "YOU ARE CAPABLE OF MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK" The concept of Leonar3Do is rooted in design. The original intention was to break with the 2D approach in which all designing methods are rooted (the paper and pencil paradigm), replacing it with a three dimensional creative environment - to realize the old dream of being able to visualize in real space the designs that we have see in our minds. Leonar3Do is the first complete and complex desktop VR equipment in the world. The notion of VR (virtual reality) is different from the concept of common 3D displayed on the monitor level (e.g. in design programs that are controllable only with a mouse) or even from the concept of stereoscopic 3D (movies, television broadcasts). The main and most useful attribute of virtual reality is that you can place an object in a virtual space in 'front' of the monitor space. The object stays where you put it, irrespective of your head movements. You can then manipulate it as a real object with the ability to move, modify, color, dismantle or drop it. Almost as you would in reality. In order to make virtual reality available for everyday use as a new, interactive potential for creativity, we wanted to provide users with a tool that meets the highest professional demands, but is still suitable for anyone without any specific skills or background. So anyone can become a professional expert and enter the rapidly expanding world of VR with Leonar3Do. You may be a teacher or a student. You may join from curiosity or pleasure. You may be one of the first to try it, or you may get to it later. There is one thing you can be sure of: you will become part of the culture of the future, by making a reasonable profit from this culture in the present, here and now. 3

Thus we achieve the best 3D effect. The proper viewing angle varies by monitor type. 15

Proper Hand positioning and Bird buttons: The recommended hand positioning is similar to holding a pen in your hand. However, it can be different for each person. The Bird is designed ergonomically to operate both the right and left-handed use, and subtle finger movements to be carried out with it. The most important is to hold comfortably; easily reach both small and large buttons, either with the index finger or with the thumb. It is recommended to keep your elbow on the table, or to support your hand, to not to fatigue the arms. If you feel tired, take a break. Monitor Selection Note: This screen only appears, if you have got more than one monitor connected to the computer. You may adjust this setting anytime in the SETUP section. Select the 3D monitor you mounted the sensors on. If you are not sure which monitor you are using, then use the Identify button to identify the monitors. 16

Monitor size Measure the width and height of the screen, with the tape measure provided. Be careful not to measure the outer edge of the monitor, but the display surface. Enter the measured width in the Width and height in the Height. Take care of following points: 1. Measure the inner edge of the monitor frame, and the outer one. 2. Enter the values in the correct unit of length (mm or inch). Eye swapping test Here you setup the eye swapping function of Leonar3Do to the value of your monitor. This ensures that the displayed 3D image will appear in front of the monitor. 17

Calibration Calibration is essential for the proper working of the Leonar3Do peripherals - Bird and 3D glasses. The Calibration process has 3 steps: 1) Touch the monitor s surface with the tip of the Bird at the cross displayed, and click with the Bird's smaller button. Repeat the procedure until you see the following massage: 2) Click 10 more times on different places with the Bird ". Click with the Bird 10 more times in space in different random directions across the width, height and depth of the area in front of the monitor while maintaining an approximately 40 cm (16-inch) distance from the monitor (this improves precision of the calibration). 3) Wait until the system software performs the calibration. When it is finished, Leonar3Do is ready for use. You only have to repeat the calibration process if the sensors are moved for some reason (e.g. during clean-up or shipping). Calibration 1) Calibration 2) 18

Congratulations tab Note: System software has to be set up correctly in order to run other Leonar3Do applications. You may return to the WIZARD anytime in order to go through the entire process, or you can also modify all the settings in the SETUP tab. SETUP tab Here you can adjust all of the settings, described under the WIZARD section. There are also two additional settings in the Setup tab, you didn t see in the WIZARD. 19

Eye distance The optimal setting may differ from person to person. You can control eye distance by using the slider under Eye distance. The green tick icon indicates that the hardware is working properly, and the peripherals are within the range of the sensors Bird and 3D glasses are visible for the sensors. If an error occurs, a red crossed circle will appear. The following states are possible: Functioning properly An error occurred 1. Sensors: Sensor error, a sensor is not connected, or strong light confuse the sensors. 2. Bird: The Bird is not visible to the sensors, or it is not connected. 3. Glasses: The glasses are not visible to the sensors, or they are not connected. 4. Hardware connection: USB connection error, or the hardware is not connected. 5. Turn Stereo On: By turning on stereo mode, a stereo picture will appear, as required by Leonar3Do applications. 21

Show scene tab Check position detection by clicking the Show scene button. If the Bird and the 3D glasses are displayed as if it were real, your calibration is right. Test image Put the 3D glasses on, and click on the shape you have recognized on the blurry image. Repeat the procedure with any objects which may appear on the screen. 22

About Leonar3Do hardware components The most important hardware elements of Leonar3Do: a spatial input device with six degrees of freedom (the 'Bird'), 3D glasses and three sensors that can be should be mounted on the top of the monitor. The Bird operates in six degrees of freedom, which means that you can not only move the individual objects or the whole space, but also rotate them. 3D glasses let you perceive the stereoscopic image displayed on the monitor as threedimensional reality. The sensors continuously track the position of both the Bird and the glasses, and send information through the central unit to the Leonar3Do system software. The applications generate, manage and display the virtual reality environment, produced in accordance with the data processed Prior to unpacking your new Leonar3Do box, it s recommended to make sure your PC meets all the system requirements for a smooth installation. Be sure to inspect each piece of equipment shipped in the packing box. If anything is missing or damaged, contact your retailer. The following parts and assemblies are included in the Leonar3Do box. Bird The bird plays the same role in the space as the traditional mouse on a flat surface. There is a major difference, however: while using the mouse you work in some distance from the location of the actual operation of the cursor, the Bird operates exactly where its cursor is, just like a real tool, a brush, a chisel, or a modeling tool. It also provides the familiar clicking functions of the mouse. The Bird operates in six degrees of freedom, which means that you can not only move the individual objects or the entire space, and also rotate them. Glasses The glasses are used to view the Leonar3Do compatible software in stereoscopic 3D. By detecting the position of eye-glasses, it is possible to project the two different pictures for each eye, precisely according to the actual position of our eyes. This results in a strikingly realistic illusion of space the user perceives the virtual object from any angle, as if it were real. Sensors The sensors provide the currently running software with continuous information about the spatial positions of the Bird and the glasses. The 120-digree viewing angle enables to track the position of both the glasses and the Bird in front of the monitor. The information provided by the three sensors are summarized and transmitted by the cable hub that can be stick up on the back of the monitor. 23

Leonar3Do Central Unit The central unit receives the data provided by the Bird, the glasses and the sensors, forwards them to the computer, and allows for the bi-directional communication. Sensor hub Collects and distributes the data transmitted from the sensors to the central unit through connected cables. Sensor cables Three short cables for connecting the sensors and the sensor hub, and one longer cable for connecting the sensor hub and the central unit. WARNING: NEVER REPLACE THEM WITH ANY OTHER CABLES! USB cable Connects the central unit to the computer. WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT THE HARDWARE COMPONENTS TO THE COMPUTER BEFORE INSTALLING THE SYSTEM SOFTWARE! Accessories Spare self-adhesive bases for the sensors A measuring tape Special wiping-cloth for cleaning the glasses and the sensors 24

Bird Recommended Hand Postures We recommend to hold the device as you would hold a pencil. The exact hand posture may differ from person to person. The Bird is ergonomically designed to be conveniently used in either the right or left hand, and to recognize even the slightest finger movement. It is important that you hold it comfortably, and that you can reach both the large and the small buttons with your index finger or your thumb. Make sure not to cover the LEDs on the Bird. It s recommended to put your elbow on the desk or otherwise prop up your hand to avoid fatigue. If you feel tired, have a break. WARNING: When using the device, you may not always have proper sense of the surface of the monitor. Be careful not to hit the monitor with the Bird. Buttons and Vibrating Engine The Bird has a large button (1) and a small button (2). The small button has two positions, like that of a typical mouse: either pressed or released. The large is pressure-sensitive. The Bird has a built-in vibrating engine which enables the simulation of the sense of touch (HAPTIC feedback). The engine also vibrates when you press the large button, so you can feel when it turns active. Button functions may change depending on software. WARNING: This product includes infrared light-emitting diodes for transmitting signals from the Bird and glasses to the sensors. Observe the following precautions while the infrared device is transmitting: Do not stare or look closely into the Bird's LEDs located at the end of its extensions, or into the glasses frame, as there are also some LEDs placed behind its cover. Do not view directly into the LEDs with optical instruments (e.g. with a magnifier). No parts in the device may be serviced by the user. 25

Head-tracked 3D glasses The head tracked 3D vision of your Leonar3Do applications is calculated based on the position of the infrared LEDs within the frame of the glasses. When using the glasses, do not cover the frame, otherwise the sensors cannot detect the position of the glasses. The Leonar3Do glasses are ergonomically designed to fit those who are spectacled. Users can wear the Leonar3Do 3D glasses together with normal corrective glasses in order to properly enjoy virtual reality and avoid eye strain. WARNING: The glasses are not prescription eye wear, sunglasses, nor protective glasses. Do not use the glasses for any general eye wear purposes (for driving, reading, protection from sunlight or ultraviolet light, etc.). These glasses have been developed to be used solely with Leonar3Do, it cannot be used with any other equipment or for any other purpose. To avoid eyestrain and drying or tearing of the eye, and further inconveniences, it is recommended to observe the resting time determined for workplaces with normal monitors but it should be at least 5 minutes per hour. Sensors In the package, you can find the sensors assembled. The shape of the arms determines which of the console fits the edge or the middle. At the bottom of the arms you can find clamp joints. These are not interchangeable. After attaching them, follow the steps below. The sensors must be cabled together with the cable hub according to the color codes. The angle of the sensors should only be changed if you cannot fix them horizontally onto the top of the monitor. If the sensors have been moved for some reason, they must be recalibrated. Avoid getting stains or fingerprints on the sensor screen, as it could interfere with position detection. The sensors are sensitive to vibrating or to bright light. This may lead to the vibration of the position of the glasses or the Bird. In this case, Leonar3Do system software indicates this vibration under the Sensors tab after installation. Leonar3Do Central Unit WARNING: Do not connect the hardware components to the computer before installing the SYSTEM SOFTWARE! The central unit, therefore the Leonar3Do equipment itself should only be turned on after all parts are assembled, and the central unit is connected to the computer by the USB cable. 26

The central unit has the following indicator lights and connection ports: 1. Central indicator LED: a) off: USB is not connected, or the computer is turned off; b) red: USB is connected, but there is no connection with the system software; c) red and blinking: connection is active, but there is some operation problem you should check the system software for details; d) red and green, blinking alternately: waiting for calibration at the first startup; e) green: ready for use; f) green and blinking: in use. 2. Glasses indicator LED: it indicates during operation whether the sensors detect the glasses. 3. Glasses connection port 4. Bird connection port 5. 28 Troubleshooting Errors indicated 1) The central indicator light is red, even though the system software has been installed, the computer restarted, and the USB cable connected Exit all Leonar3Do applications. Make sure that the system software is running. Look for this icon on taskbar: If the icon is not visible, try to launch the Leonar3Do system software from the Start menu. If the icon is visible, unplug the USB cable then reconnect it If this does not resolve the problem, exit and restart the system software. If the problem persists, the USB may have been connected prior to software installation. If so, remove any drivers with Windows Device Manager that may have installed, disconnect Leonar3Do, and repeat the setup procedure. 2) The central indicator light is blinking red Check the system software for possible error messages. a. "NO MONITOR SIGNAL! Check the Video Controller." The video controller may not be connected. Check and connect the controller in accordance with the instructions above. b. "SENSOR ERROR! A cable is not plugged or the light is too disturbing." Check the sensors as described below. Problems with the 3D visualization 1) Stereoscopic 3D is not working Test your ability to see 3D images: If by performing the steps in the previous point you have made sure the hardware is functioning correctly, click the "Show test image" button under "3D", put on the glasses, and test your ability to see stereoscopic images by following the on-screen instructions. A small percentage of people are not capable of viewing stereoscopic images. If the test figures are still not visible, consult a physician. The driver for the graphics card may have become out-of-date: Visit the website of the graphics card manufacturer, and update the driver. Check whether your graphics card supports OpenGL 3.0. If objects have moved away from the monitor it may be difficult for the spatial effect to manifest it is typical with beginner users. In this case, move the virtual objects closer to the monitor level, and as your eyes gradually adjust to viewing stereoscopic images, the objects can be moved farther and farther away from the monitor. 2) No image appears on the screen Check whether the cables are properly connected. Check the cables to ensure there are no contact faults. 28

3) The cursor appears far from the tip of the Bird The eye distance may not be set correctly. You can set the eye distance under the "Advanced settings" tab. If the cursor appears closer to the monitor than the tip of the Bird, increase the distance, and if it is displayed closer to you, decrease it. The sensors may have been moved. Recalibrate the sensors as described in this guide. Make sure the sensors have been connected properly in the appropriate order. Connect the ports located at the red, white and green dots on the sensor hub to the sensors with the red, white and green dots. If the order must be changed, recalibrate the sensors. Make sure the monitor screen was measured accurately, without the monitor frame. Also check that the correct value is entered under "Monitor". If not, remeasure the monitor screen, enter the correct value, and recalibrate the sensors. Make sure the sensors positions are straight. Optimally sit at a 45-degree angle. It is not recommended to modify the angle of the sensors, however, if they can only be fixed at a different angle, you may adjust the angle in order to compensate the skew position of the base. If the sensors have been moved, it is necessary to recalibrate them. Positioning and Bird-related Issues 1) Position detection does not function correctly, or the Bird or the glasses position is vibrating Make sure that the cables are connected as described in this guide, and that all the connectors are plugged in appropriately. The background light might be too vibrant or bright. In the system software, make sure that all the three sensor icons are checked under the "Sensors" tab. Turn off the lights temporarily to check whether position detection improves, or, if sensors face a window, turn the monitor to another direction. Make sure that the LEDs are not covered. Be sure not to cover the lower LED on the Bird with a finger. Be careful not to cover the frame of the glasses with hair, caps or anything else. 2) I have accidentally plugged in the USB before installing the SYSTEM SOFTWARE If any driver has been installed automatically by Windows, remove the driver with Windows Device Manager. Then disconnect Leonar3Do from the computer, and repeat the installation procedure. 3) The Bird's larger button remains pressed Unplug the Bird and reconnect. 4) Looking at the image is tiring for the eye, or causes headache WARNING: If eyestrain, eye drying and/or headache persist, discontinue viewing stereoscopic 3D images and consult a physician. 29
