KG 01 SCALE LIVING: Turns the floor into a space for design Vorwerk presents first collection of free-form tiles for the home Vorwerk Kommunikation Kuhlmannstraße Hamelin, Germany Fon (05151) Fax (05151) Hadi Teherani and Vorwerk Carpets developed an innovative textile concept for tiles with the collections SCALE and FreeSCALE that came out in Now Vorwerk is presenting the SCALE LIVING collection at Qubique in Berlin, the next-generation tradeshow for furniture and design, and again in collaboration with Teherani s bureau. SCALE LIVING transposes the concept of freely shaped tiles to the residential living sector. The time has finally come when carpet tiles can be used to set out-of-theordinary accents on the floor at home, too. New standard for individual creations on the floor The collection includes three fascinating tile shapes: CUT, BLOOM and MESH_S, a somewhat smaller variation of the free-form MESH already known from SCALE, break with the rigid 50x50 cm grid for carpet tiles in many ways. Except for the basic product, Frame, these three shapes are also available in two exclusive materials real leather and a brushed stainless steel finish and a wide variety of colours: in cosy-warm shades of grey, Dark, Mid and Light, and in worlds of colours termed Purple, Amber, Aqua, Indigo and Coral. This system of materials, surfaces and colours offers plenty of leeway to create carpet shapes and patterns that were heretofore unknown. 2 Completely new shapes and patterns The tiles are combined in units of 4, 6 or 8 tiles apiece. They can then be composed in any number and arrangement desired to form individualised carpets. Completely new patterns result from the mixture of differentcoloured tiles. Images arise on the floor that reinforce a special room atmosphere at home, yet are equally able to loosen up strictly set floor plans. For instance, MESH_S tiles shape themselves into interesting network structures. In contrast, creations using BLOOM have a more organic look, and CUT can be used to form fascinating circular elements, among other options. The carpet becomes an phenomenon on the floor, a freely designable element of spatial architecture in the home, is how Johannes Schulte, CEO at Vorwerk, emphasises the new possibilities for form, function and design. In future no one will have to pay attention to the abutting wall anymore when working with carpet tiles at home SCALE LIVING establishes open-shape carpet-laying for everyone. What s more, these innovative tiles are an improvement acoustically, too, especially in the case of contemporary styles of architecture with their many highly reverberant surfaces. Ecologically innovative as well One marvelous technological feature of SCALE LIVING is its specially coated backing. It assures that the tiles are self-adhesive on smooth subfloorings such as laminate, stone or ceramics and can be taken up again quite easily, too. New kinds of flexible shapes can be created again and again without requiring special installation knowledge, skills or tools. And above all, with SCALE LIVING you spare yourself the bothersome work with adhesive glues that are equally a cause for ecological concern. This innovative and particularly environmentally conscionable coating method developed by Vorwerk makes use of the adhesion principle: two different substances adhere to each other due to molecular forces. SCALE LIVING products also display an exemplary character with an eye to building and decorating with health in mind: They bear the seal Suitable for those suffering from allergies awarded by TÜV Nord, a North German 2/5

3 technical certification association, and are recommended by DAAB, the German Allergy and Asthma Association, due to their verified properties towards reducing the amount of fine dust particles. All of which make SCALE LIVING the most current example in enacting Vorwerk Carpets Eco Balance a company-wide programme agenda that takes ecological, social and economic aspects pertaining to sustainability seriously while linking them in a symbiotic way. Free-form tiles at a museum Following the première at Qubique in Berlin, SCALE LIVING is also going to be presented at the Museum of Applied Art in Cologne early in Within the context of the imm International Furniture Show, the exhibition Aalto to Zumthor Architects Furniture will be running there showing unusual products and objects by renowned architects and designers. Marcel Breuer and Egon Eiermann are represented, among others, as well as significant contemporary architects such as Frank O. Gehry, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Hadi Teherani, who will be presenting himself with SCALE LIVING. A further presentation of this collection is scheduled within the framework of Heimtextil in Frankfurt, the largest international trade fair for textiles at business sites and the home. Starting in the spring of 2012, SCALE LIVING, the first collection of freeform tiles, will be subsequently available commercially, too.
