The land of the Thunder Dragon, is an extraordinary place. Vast and impressive fortresses, known as Dzongs, dominate Bhutan's landscape - from the wide subtropical valleys in the south to the Himalayan mountain ranges of the north. One of the world's biodiversity hotspots, Bhutan's national animal is the Takin - legend says it is half goat, half cow. This is a country where selling cigarettes or plastic bags is illegal, where giant protective penises are painted on the walls, where chillies and cheese with red rice is the national dish, and where Gross National Happiness is deemed more important than Gross National Product. Tucked away from the modern world for centuries, Bhutan, the last remaining Himalayan Kingdom, is managing to retain it's Buddhist culture and traditions of the past whilst taking a cautious approach to modernisation. The juxtaposition of old and new is one of Bhutan's most appealing qualities: it's ancient history is one of legends and miracles performed by saints, whom the majority of the population still worship daily, whilst most of the population now have electricity produced by hydro power and 2008 saw a new King crowned and the election of a new democratic parliament - Bhutan really is an extraordinary country in transit. As our name suggests, we like big panoramic vistas and encounters that give one a new perspective on life - Bhutan boasts a few of these of Himalayan proportions. We have made a name designing journeys that allow our clients to get "under the surface" of a country - to meet the people and get off the tourist route. In designing this itinerary, we have allowed time to meet local people, to walk in rural valleys, and really get to know this beautiful country, as well as taking in the most important historical and religious sights that define Bhutan.

The Bhutanese Epic is our most comprehensive small group journey, crossing the length of the country, you will join pilgrims including the Bhutanese Brokpa nomads, at two remote, local festivals in Eastern. Climbing over misty mountain passes and dropping down into tropical valleys, this route with its twists and turns never ceases to surprise. Visits to village homes, craft workshops and archery grounds allow you to get up close and to get fully immersed into Bhutan's rich culture. This trip really is one in a lifetime.

Today you will have time to explore Paro valley. Visit the magical Kyichu Lhakang, the unique cone shaped Dungtse Lhakhang (take a torch) and the atmospheric ruins of Drugyal Dzong. You may also have time to visit Dzongdrakha, a tranquil village of about eight farmhouses built around four temples in the cliffs. It is about an hours walk. Tonight, dine in a local farmhouse. Today you will feel as you are really in the mountains as you head up the Chele La pass, with it's wealth of flora and fauna. Make sure you have a warm jumper up here - and plenty of sunscreen as it can get cold but the sun can be fierce. From here there is a 4 hour ridge hike to Kila Goempa. It's a tough but rewarding walk. If everyone would prefer a shorter walk, there is a trail down to the nunnery, that takes about an hour, or you can drive down. From Kila Goempa, it is about 20 minutes back to the road where you will meet your vehicle. This afternoon visit Paro s National museum and perhaps ask your guide to book a well earned hotstone bath for you this evening. 8 This morning you head to Taktsang Lhakhang, Bhutan s most iconic landmark and one of the most sacred of pilgrimages in the Himalayas. The hike is quite tough - but most abilities will be able to cope with it if it is taken at a steady pace and we allow the full day for the excursion and stop regularly including for coffee on the way up and for lunch on the return leg. There is a stopping point with a small cafe half way up and a second view point further up for those who suffer from vertigo, or would rather not walk the whole way. Walking through oak, rhododendrons and pine trees draped in lichen, it is a rewarding and photogenic hike. There are ponies available for hire for the first section. Please ask your guide if you would like one as you have not had many days to acclimatise. This morning you will be taken along the national 'highway' to the small capital of Thimphu stopping off at Thamchhu Lhakhang on the way. The view over Thimphu from the big Buddha statue helps to get your bearings before heading into Thimphu town. Later this afternoon head up to Mothitang to see Bhutan's national animal, the rare and elusive Takin. The viewpoint above Thimphu gives you an idea of the size of the city and if there is time, for those who wish to stretch their legs, there are great views of the town and Dzong on a lateral hike through the forests (1hr- 1.5hr) to Wanguetse and Dechenphodrang monasteries. This evening, dine at one of Thimphu's international restaurants. 9 After breakfast, a full day of sightseeing in Thimphu. Today you will visit the Memorial Chorten, which is so important to Thimphu's inhabitants; the Folk Heritage Museum which will give you an insight into how many rural Bhutanese live; the Traditional Arts School and the Paper Factory as well as the local market. If there is time, and depending on guests interests you can also visit the National Textile Museum or the Traditional Medicine school. Alternatively the day at leisure to explore Thimphu on your own. An earlier start this morning to ascend up to the colourful Dochu Laa pass. Hopefully you will have clear views of the high Himalaya. Visit the ornate Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple) atop of the hill before you start your descent into Punakha. You may like to walk some of this on foot, following the ancient woodland path, once the main road over the pass, to meet the vehicles further down. This temperate forest changes in character as you descend into Punakha to your hotel, where you stay for the next 2 nights. This afternoon visit Chimi Lhakhang - a fertility temple on top of a small hill. 10 This morning drive up to the other side of Punakha valley to visit the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal chorten. It's a 45 minute hike up to the chorten over a suspension bridge. Afterwards, either on foot, by vehicle or even by raft - head back down into the valley for a picnic lunch and to visit the spectacular Punakha Dzong - arguably the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan, where you will take time to explore some of the magnificent temples. There may be an option to raft down to the Dzong (ask us). Today we head to the beautiful Phobjikha valley - it's a bit of a bumpy drive, and there may be roadworks, but there will be stops along the way. Continue on the road east over the Black Mountains, where you may spot monkeys if you are lucky! A branch in the road leads to the glacial Phobjikha valley. You may like to take a walk down into the valley from the Lawa La pass, where you may come across herders with their Yaks. It will be cold here, so you might need to get out your thermals tonight! 11 Today you will have time to relax and explore the valley on foot. Visit the monastery and village before a gentle walk along the edge of the valley, across a stream and perhaps visit the local school. Learn about the cranes at the blacknecked crane centre and see if you can spot any other wildlife through their telescope. This morning you may wish to start your day early - walking up through the valley, perhaps even up to the Lawa Laa pass - before getting in the car. Head, across the Black Mountains to the Pele Laa pass (3,300m) where you may see yaks grazing. Stop to stretch your legs at Chendebji Chorten. After a while you will see Trongsa Dzong in it's commanding position, perched on the other side of the valley. It is a 40 minute drive or a 2 hour walk (down and up) to reach - so you may wish to take a break and some photos from this side of the valley. Explore the Dzong and small town before heading to your hotel perched high above Trongsa. 12 This morning, visit the new museum in the Ta Dzong before heading further east over the Yotong La pass and into the Bumthang valleys. After a gradual decent along some of the straightest roads you will drive on in Bhutan, you will reach the small town of Jakar (sometimes called Chamkar), near the bottom of the Chokhor valley. Continue past here to drive up to Tang valley, the most remote valley in Bumthang. On the way, stop at the burning 'lake' and see if you can spot the temple that is said to be hidden in the water. Tonight you will be hosted by a local family in their farmhouse or stay in a more basic guesthouse in the old palace grounds. After a leisurely morning visiting Ogyen Chholing Palace museum head back South to Jakar. Spend the next two days walking between some of Bhutan's most important and most sacred temples in the Chokhor valley. Travel Details Trongsa to Tang (4.5hrs) Accommodation Homestay or basic guesthouse Includes Breakfast, lunch, dinner Travel Details Tang to Jakar (2hrs) Accommodation Swiss Guest House Includes Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Continue your exploration of Bumthang by vehicle and on foot. You are more than likely to be joined by cheeky school children and a 1 mile walk may end up taking an hour with all their questioning and the photo opportunities! This evening visit the Swiss Guest house for supper, although the service here can be slow, we love their home-made bread and banana cake! The 'factory shop' in the 'industrial area' sells swiss cheese, apple wine and locally brewed beer. Today's drive is long, but one of the most spectacular in Bhutan as you drive to Mongar. Stop to walk through the traditional village of Ura, and maybe visit the bar by the side of the road, where the owner is a traditional herbalist and has jars of cordiceps (the caterpillar fungus) and follow the road east over the Thrumshing La pass (3,750m) into eastern Bhutan. Stop in Sengor valley for a break and to stretch your legs. If time permits walk to the temple in Sengor village and perhaps visit a farm house there. From Sengor you begin the steep descent along roads that seem to cling to almost vertical cliffs! From the clouds you emerge into a completely different landscape of rice terraces, tropical fruits and monkeys playing on stones. Take a walk along the traditional main street before settling into your hotel. 14 After a hearty breakfast, make your way to Mongar Dzong and take a seat around the beautifully paved courtyard. High ranking lamas and an orchestra are seated in a pavilion on one side of the courtyard. On the other, terraces accommodate hundreds of locals, their colourful ghos and kiras making a dazzling patchwork quilt in the bright sunshine. Many of these pilgrims have travelled a long way to watch the ceremonies and earn merit for the next life. Sitting amongst the local congregation you can witness the kaleidoscope of moving colour from above, and also look out across the valley. This afternoon head to Trashigang- travel up through leafy forests to the Kori La Pass (2,450m) and then descend bend after bend then past fields of banana trees until you reach the painted bridge over the Sheri chu at 700m altitude, soon you will start to see glimpses of Trashigang Dzong high above the bank of the river. Head straight to the Dzong for today's festivities. The Trashigang festival is an entirely different experience to that of Mongar. The Dzong is perched on a cliff and so the ceremonies take place in an enclosed courtyard. The pilgrims gather around the edge and monks look out from balconies on the first and second floors. The view from these balconies is magnificent. As the monks perform their dances their swirling robes appear as spinning tops on the stone paved floor. Trashigang town is an interesting place to walk around and buy any souvenirs for back home. 15 Depending on the timings of today, if there is time, you may be able to take a break from the festivities to visit the picturesque Gom Kora (1hr drive), and the surrounding countryside. If it is a nice day, perhaps a picnic down by the river. Perhaps visit a local village where you will find weavers - famous in this area - although it is likely they will all be at the festival! An early start to head south to the border town of Samdrup Jongkhar. Today's drive will be your longest drive, but we will stop for breaks often including lunch on the way and a visit to the Khaling Handloom weaving centre if it is open. You will notice the landscape and climate changing as you head further south. Samdrup Jongkhar itself has an eclectic mixture of Bhutanese and Indian shops, restaurants and hotels, and worth a stroll around if there is time before settling into your hotel. 17 The city of Kathmandu, together with the cities of Patan and Bhaktapur make up the Kathmandu Valley. The whole valley is what most refer to as 'Kathmandu' and the three cities, small towns and villages within the valley form the hub of Nepal's traditional culture and arts. Nepal is an ethnically diverse country with almost 30 million inhabitants and 92 spoken languages and you will see evidence of this in Kathmandu. It is a place of temples and shrines where worship is a part of daily life for both Buddhists and Hindus who have resided side by side within Nepal for centuries. At the heart of each city is the Durbar Square (Durbar means 'palace') and it was from the Royal Palace on each square that the kings of Nepal once ruled. The medieval city core of Kathmandu, is often considered to be among the most beautiful urban locations in the world. (Please let us know if you would like to add more days in Nepal).

Paro, sits at the confluence of the attractive Paro-chu and Do-chu valleys a short distance from Bhutan s only international airport. The main street of this charming town is lined with colourfully painted wooden shop fronts and restaurants. The town is an excellent place to explore on foot and is worth an hour or two stroll, if time allows.. Only a few kilometres from the runway, you get a taste of many aspects of Bhutan and her people. Beside the road, farmers plant crops, a water wheel turns a prayer wheel that rings a bell; oxon plough fields and children walk to school.

Chele Laa pass used to be on the main route from North western India to Bhutan and is well documented in travellers accounts. If the weather is clear there are amazing views from the pass to Mt Jomolhari and Jichu Drakye in Bhutan and Mt Kanchenchunga in Sikkim. Chele Laa is one of the richest sites for Bhutanese flora and birdlife. Many species of Primula, Rhododendron, Iris, Lily, Gentian as well as four species of Himalayan poppies are found here.. Drukgyal Dzong. These ruins are situated 15km north of Paro. The Dzong was built in 1649 to protect the country against threatening Tibetans and is the best example of a fortified Dzong built in the 17 th century. Unfortunately a fire in 1951 destroyed the Dzong but it still shows unique and intriguing design and construction techniques including a false entry to lure invaders into an enclosed courtyard, which along with other tactics, helped the Bhutanese protect their country successfully through the 17 th century.

Paro Dzong, otherwise known as the 'fortress of the heap of jewels', the Dzong is guarded by a Mongol holding a tiger on a leash, a fact we at Panoramic Journeys like especially! Look out for the superb woodwork on the central tower, the painting of the four friends (bird, rabbit, monkey and elephant) and the impressive cosmic mandalas.. The National Museum, housed in Paro Dzong's ancient watch tower, this museum gives a delightful introduction to Bhutan's history. Artefacts ranging from costumes, armour, masks and stamps to stuffed animals and musical instruments which are all housed in the spiral building. Although you can't take photos inside the museum, you may wish to keep your camera with you for the amazing views over Paro valley as you exit. Kyichu Lhakhang. Legend has it that the first temple at Kyichu was built in the 7 th century. A giant demoness was said to be attempting to prevent the spread of Buddhism by laying across the Himalayas. The Buddhist Tibetan King decided to build 108 temples across her body to subdue her. Lhasa was built above her heart and Kyichu Lhakhang was built on her left foot. In the 8 th century the temple was visited by Guru Rinpoche and it is believed he concealed many spiritual treasures here.

Taktsang Monastery (3,200m), an iconic landmark and national treasure, Taktsang ( The Tiger s Nest ) is perched spectacularly on a rocky ledge above Paro valley. Its foundation was laid in the 8 th century when 2 nd Buddha, Guru Padma Sambhava, flew to the site on the back of a tigress and meditated here for 3 months, 3 days and 3 hours in order to subdue the evil demons residing within the cave.. Taktsang Monastery hike, one of the most sacred of pilgrimages in the Himalayas, this hike can be tough - but most abilities will be able to cope if it is taken at a steady pace. Although those accustomed to the altitude might take 2 hours to climb to the temple, allow a full day for the excursion and stop regularly including for coffee on the way up and for lunch on the return leg. You will be able to go at your own pace and if you prefer to stop at the cafe or view point a little higher up, that is fine. Walking through oak, rhododendrons and trees draped in lychen, it is a rewarding and photogenic hike.

Thimphu, this small city was established as the capital in The juxtaposition of old and new is one of its appealing qualities; robed monks texting on their mobile phones, college students in traditional dress with the latest trainers and hairstyles; even the beautifully hand painted petrol station! Famous for being the only capital in the world without traffic lights, 2008 saw many new structures built including the stadium which held the King s coronation. Best explored on foot, decorated shop fronts and intriguing 'grocery-cum-bar' signs reveal friendly shopkeepers and a surprising array of goods.. Takin, often known as a 'goat-antelope' the takin is found in the Eastern Himalayas above 2,000m. In Bhutan they can be found in the Jigme Dorji Wangchuk National Park, but you would be extremely lucky to see one in the wild. This unique animal is strongly associated with Bhutan's religious history and is the national animal of Bhutan. Visit the Mothithang Takin Reserve to learn about these mystical creatures and the legend of how they came to be.

National Memorial Chorten, Bhutan's third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, wished to erect a monument to world peace and prosperity, but died before his plan came to fruition. However, the Royal Family and Cabinet resolved to fulfil his wishes and erect a memorial that would perpetuate his memory and also serve as a monument to peace.. Folk Heritage Museum, this is one of the oldest houses in Thimphu and as you look out of the windows from the top floor you can really imagine what Thimphu must have been like a century ago - just another rural valley with a small cluster of farmhouses. This traditionally built mud and timber farm house complete with its objects and implements from traditional Bhutanese life, provide an insight into how many rural Bhutanese still live today and give you a chance to have a proper look, before you visit a real family home. National Institute for Zorig Chusum There are 13 traditional arts of Bhutan, which can be grouped under one heading, Zorig chusum 'the 13 arts'. These are - painting, carpentry, carving, sculpture, casting, blacksmith, bamboo and cane craft, gold smithing & silver smithing, weaving, embroidery, masonry, leather works and paper making. Bhutanese art is religious and anonymous. The artist does not work to make a work of art, but a work of faith which will gain merit for the patron who commissioned the piece. There is a National Institute for Zorig Chusum and private schools that offer courses for artistic students.

Druk Wangyel Lhakhang, the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang was built over a period of four years ( ) under the vision and patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo. The Lhakhang honours the courageous service of the armed forces and the Fourth King, who personally led the troops against the insurgents.. Dochu Laa (3,140m), on fine days this pass has spectacular views of the snow capped Himalayas to the North. An impressive collection of 108 stupas and the more recently built temple, make this a very photogenic spot. One of the 4 th King's four wives initiated their construction to commemorate Bhutan's victory over North East Indian separatists in the South in This pass is a botanists dream, home to 16 species of Bhutanese Rhododendrons and other species such as Primula, Lauraceae such as Litsea, Cinnamomum, Neolitsea, Oaks, Virburnum, Magnolia, Daphne, Arisaema, Gentian, Himalayan Acer, and many others.

Punakha, was the winter capital of Bhutan for over 300 years before it was moved to Thimphu. Despite its historical significance, the first King of Bhutan was crowned in Punakha Dzong in Punakha is now a small village and most of the land in Punakha valley is used for cultivation..

Punakha Dzong (1,250m), has been damaged by fires, floods and earthquake over the centuries, but the Dzong has recently been fully restored to its original glory. The murals depicting the life of Buddha in the assembly hall are impressive - one of our clients recently likened the hall to the Sistine Chapel.. Chimi Lhakhang, this temple was built in honour of Lama Drukpa Kunley - the "Divine Madman". Childless couples travel from around the world to be blessed here by one of the wooden effigies of the "Erotic Lama" penis! Some take their children back to the temple to be named or send back photographs of the children that they have conceived since the blessing. Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten (Chorten Walk), The three-storey chorten was built by Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon in 1999 for the protection of the country. The views of Punakha valley from the top of the chorten are spectacular. Even though you are not allowed to take photos inside, it is worth keeping your camera for the views from the top.

This beautiful glacial valley lies at 2900m. After climbing up through dense forests dripping with lichen, the wide, open expanse of dwarf bamboo can come as a surprise. Perched overlooking this beautiful, almost flat valley is the village and monastery of Gangtey. As well as the cranes that roost here in the winter, there are also barking deer, wild boar, red fox, leopard and Himalayan black bear in the valley. Electricity is produced by generators here because wires have been banned as they would cause problems for the cranes..

The picturesque village of Gangtey overlooks Phobjikha Valley. The monastery has been totally renovated and was consecrated in October It is home to about 140 gomchen during the summer months who follow the teachings of Guru Rimpoche. These lay practitioners are permitted to be married and during the winter months - they and their families move to a warmer village and monastery - leaving Gangtey almost empty.. From the end of October to March, as the monastery empties for the winter, rare black necked cranes migrate to Phobjikha valley from the Tibetan plateau - in just one day. It is said that when the birds arrive from their long flight, they circle the monastery 3 times before landing. These elegant and shy birds are considered sacred. It is said that killing one could be punishable with a death sentence. The crane information centre has many books, photos and displays about the birds and telescopes to spot wildlife in the valley.

As with most other towns in Bhutan, the Dzong dominates the town of Trongsa (2,200m). Perched above the Dzong, the actual town is little more than one street. Many of the town's inhabitants are of Tibetan origin and you may have a chance to try some Tibetan specialities here. Chendebji chorten was based on the iconic Nepalese Swayambhunath in Kathmandu and was built in the 19th century to cover the remains of a slayed demon who had been terrorising a local village. Placed where two rivers converge, this is a great setting for a picnic if the weather is fine.. Situated strategically above the Trongsa dzong, the 300 year old Ta Dzong, which served as the watch tower for centuries, has recently been renovated and now holds a state of the art museum, consecrated in December The temple museum provides an insight into the religious history of Bhutan and the historical significance of Trongsa in Bhutan's history. The museum has eleven galleries, one of which is dedicated to the history of the Kings of the Wangchuck dynasty, which had its cradle in Trongsa, and showcases many royal possessions, including the first Kings Raven crown. At the top of the tower there is a cafe with fantastic views of the valley below.

The Bhutanese are very proud of the four wide and fertile valleys that make up this region: Chokhor, Tang, Ura and Chhume. The main and largest valley Chokhor is home to some of the most important temples in Bhutan - because of this, this valley is often confusingly referred to as Bumthang. One of the main crops in this region is buckwheat and you may have the opportunity to taste buckwheat noodles (served with chilli - of course!) or buckwheat pancakes with the delicious local honey.. As one enters the first valley of the Bumthang region many see a resemblance between this attractive valley and Switzerland. The road first enters the Chhume valley. You might like to stop in Zungney to watch the weavers of this village make their distinctive stripy woven fabric (yathras) used for bedcovers and cushions and jackets. It is worth stopping to admire the attractive tiny ancient temple, west of the main shop, selling the weavers work.

Jampey Lhakhang was built in 659AD by the Tibean King Songtsen Gampo as one of the 108 temples he built throughout the Himalayas in a single day in order to pin down a troublesome demoness. Inside the main temple are three stone steps representing the past, present and the new age. It is believed that when the middle step sinks to ground level - the gods will have become like humans and the world as we know it will end.. Kurje Monastic complex, three large south facing temples or Lhakhangmake up the complex - one of the most sacred sites in Bhutan. Here you will find two caves - the meditation cave which contains Guru Rimpoche's body imprint or Kurjey after which the complex is named. The other is a small passage where you might like to try to pass through in order to cleanse your soul. The 'Dzong of the white bird' sits on a spur overlooking the valley. According to legend, in the middle of the 16th century a monastery was being built by Ngagi Wangchuk in a different location when a white bird flew over the site and landed where the Dzong now stands. This was seen to be a good omen and the site of the monastery was moved. The monastery was later built into a Dzong in The views of the valley from up here are fantastic.

Tang is one of the four valleys of Bumthang district and it is higher than Jakar. The road to Tang climbs over the river and reaches Drangchel villaje after 7km. Perched on a high cliff above the road, you will notice the monastic hermitage of Kunzangdrak Goemba, founded in 1488 by Pema Lingpa. Pema Lingpa dreamt that a monk had handed him instructions to go to a river in the Tang valley which formed large pools. Standing at the side of the 'lake' Pema saw a temple deep in it's depths and dived in. He found treasure in its depths. Pema was accused of trickery by a district administrator, so when he returned to lake, many people came to watch. He lit a lamp and proclaimed that if he he was genuine, he would return with the lamp still burning. He dived in and after some time, suddenly emerged back on the rock with the lamp still burning and a box of treasure. The pool is known as Menbartsho, or Burning Lake..

Ura and Shingkhar are both very attractive and compact villages in the Ura Valley. Unlike in other regions of Bhutan, houses here are built very close together. Traditionally farmers in this harsh climate depended on sheep and yaks for their livelihoods but in the last few decades potato farming has brought prosperity.. Eastern Bhutan is the most densely populated region in Bhutan, although you will not come across many settlements as many are in isolated valleys accessible only by foot. Eastern Bhutan also the most ethnically diverse region, with small minority ethnic groups living in remote valleys, some of which are closed to visitors - in order to protect the fragile culture. There are many different local dialects and languages in this area - the main language here is Sharchop which is quite different from the Dzongkha spoken in the west: So much so, that the common language is often English! Unlike in the west of Bhutan where the towns are in valleys, in the east they are on the tops of hills or ridges. Mongar town is the district headquarters of the Mongar district but the Dzong here only dates from built on the orders of the 3rd King.

A tsechu is a Buddhist festival in honour of the Buddhist Saint Padmasambhava, the saint who was responsible for introducing Buddhism to Bhutan. Monks perform sacred Cham dances to the sound of horns and cymbals - interspersed with performances of folksongs, whilst Atsaras, naughty clowns adorning vast phalli, entertain the crowd! People flock from surrounding villages dressed in their best clothes to receive blessings and watch the Cham dances. There is a strong local belief that each festival attendee will gain and accumulate merit by watching the dances and their presence at the festival will help wash away many of their past sins.. Cham' dances are Bhutanese religious dances. Dancers wear spectacular costumes made of yellow silk or rich brocade often decorated with ornaments of carved bone. For certain dances, they wear masks, which may represent animals, fearsome deities, skulls or a manifestation of Guru Rimpoche. Dancers demonstrate the triumph of good over evil and the power of compassion to the haunting sounds of trumpets, cymbals and flutes. The dances, masks and costumes of Bhutan's festivals have survived unchanged for centuries. Each dance is said to be an exact re-enactment of visions seen by Bhutan's great Buddhist saints, and thus any changes are considered sacrilegious.

Trashigang is a (relatively!) lively town with many bars where you may wish to try one of the local brews. The town's focal point is a central plaza and parking area. The large prayer wheel sitting in the centre of the square also doubles as a bus stop! Trashigang (also known as Tashigang) Dzong perches on a cliff overlooking 2 rivers and the annual tsechu takes place in the enclosed courtyard.. Gom Kora, correctly named Gomphu Kora, is one of the temples where Guru Rinpoche, the great tantric mystic, meditated. It is a small temple in front of a huge black rock, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have vanquished a local demon in the shape of a snake. There is evidence of Guru Rinpoche's stay here, an imprint of his hat in a cave below the black rock. In the spring, hundreds of pilgrims gather here to circumambulate the temple at the annual Tsechu.

We select the hotels that we consider to be the most comfortable and characterful from old palaces, to converted farmhouses, and more modern hotels in great locations. Some rooms have fireplaces, others balconies, or a fantastic location - and 99% are ensuite. In places where there is limited accommodation such as the Phobjikha and Haa valleys and further east, the hotels may be a bit more basic, perhaps with hot water provided in bowls or harder beds! Accommodation bookings can change at the last minute in Bhutan, so you should be prepared for a possible change to the itinerary.

Radisson Blu offers comfortable accommodation in Delhi with each room boasting silk designer upholstery and linens, plush beds and rain showers. Try the international cuisine in the restaurant, wind down in the on site spa and gym or sunbathe on the patio before taking a dip in the cool waters of the free form pool. This designer pool also features the Spa Bar, boasting healthy and nutritious cuisine. Free Wifi is available throughout.
