11 PASTE SOLDERS Krohn Industries has developed a series of gold, platinum, and silver solder pastes for the jewelry industry. These solder pastes when used with a paste dispenser offer the jewelry manufacturer a semi-automated solder application system that produces excellent results with considerable cost savings. Solder pastes offer particular advantages when used in soldering rope chain, hollow shells, are applied to the joint with a semi-automated paste dispenser, or with a manually operated hand held syringe. The assemblies are then heated by any of the following methods: furnace, torch, induction, or resistance to effect soldering. When soldering operations are performed in an air or poor furnace atmosphere, a paste that contains residue is easily removed with warm water. Furnace Pastes Flux-free pastes are recommended for furnace soldering where good reducing atmospheres are Krohn Industries technical staff will assist and advise the user of the correct solder paste for each application. a belt type atmospheric furnace. Two of our best sellers are our phos-copper paste and KB 430 low silver paste. Both paste solders are low cost, cadmium and indium free, have excellent flow properties, produce strong joints and work on a wide range of metals, so they are perfect for joining dissimilar metals. Base Metal Paste Solder Phos-Copper Paste The phos-copper paste flows at 1325 F, or about the same temperature as a soft silver solder. The alloy has a light brassy color and is used extensively to produce brass military belt buckles. The phos-copper paste is great for use on copper, brass, bronze, and mixed metal projects like silver to brass and stainless steel to brass or gold. KB 430 Low Silver Paste The KB 430 low silver paste flows at 430 F, that s low enough to solder with a good lighter. The alloy has a non-tarnishing white color and is ideal for repairing or producing costume jewelry. The KB 430 works on nickel, German Silver, tin, white bronze, stainless steel,silver, brass, and bronze. Because of the low silver content it is not suitable for production of silver items but it s great for tricky repairs when an ultra low flow temperature is needed. The factor found here is then multiplied with the weight of the karated gold to be converted. The resulting number is the weight of alloy to be added to the original metal. For example, when changing 25 dwts of 14K to 10K: 1. Find the factor: from 14K to 10k = Multiply the factor by the weight of metal to be converted: 25 dwts x.400 = 10 dwts Therefore, 25 dwts of 14K, when added to 10 dwts of alloy, yields 35 dwts of 10K. Bright Nickel Krohn Bright Nickel Electroplating Solution imparts a bright mirror-like finish and can be used as an underplate for rhodium, gold, and silver electroplating. Copper Krohn Acid Copper Electrolytic Plating Solution contains no cyanide, and is formulated to deposit an excellent underplate for multi-layer plating operations. Rhodium Rhodium deposited from Krohn Decorative Rhodium Electroplating Solution exhibits a hard, brilliant white, non-tarnishing, highly reflective surface. These properties impart a durable high luster finish. Black Rhodium Krohn Decorative Black Rhodium Electroplating Solutions deposit a hard, black, non-tarnishing surface. When choosing an anode, refer to the compatability chart below. The surface area of the anode must exceed that of the piece(s) being plated by at least 30%. Using too small an anode will decrease the efficiency of the plating bath, causing the need to use too high a voltage or too long a plating cycle; both of which will negatively affect the quality of the plating deposit. In addition, the inefficiency will also shorten the effective life of the solution, reducing the number of piece(s) plated from each bottle of solution. Care should be taken to replace soluble anodes when they become too small. 20 CERAMITATION Low Temperature Enamel Ceramitation is a remarkably versatile decorative enamel with a finish that is virtually equivalent to hard-fired enamel. The hardness of cured Ceramitation is 60 to 75 on the Sward scale, as compared to Kiln fired enamel at 65 to 80. Ceramitation features rich-warm colors, and is an excellent spraying medium - Thinner is available for this method of application. Only 30 to 45 minutes at a maximum curing temperature of 250 F (120 C) is required. Temperature controlled ovens, infrared lamps, or portable electric heaters may be used. Ceramitation may be applied to any porous surface not affected by the heat of the curing cycle: metal, ceramic, porcelain, glass, rock, plastic... Colors can be mixed to create unique colors and shades. Can be applied to vertical, horizontal, curved, and round surfaces. Non-conductive. Surfaces enameled with Ceramitation may be electroplated without affecting the color or finish. Can cure at room temperature. Ceramitation is a two part system: Part A (color) and Part B (catalyst). 22 TIVACLEAN Krohn Tivaclean is an electrocleaning concentrate for both metals and plastics. Tivaclean is an orange powder that, when mixed with water, (8 oz. to the gallon) changes to a fluorescent green to insure full rinsing. Tivaclean also contains anti-foaming agents for low sudsing and a deodorant to suppress odor. A bio-catalyst is also present for biodegradability and eliminates the need to use toxic chlorinated solvents. In solution, Tivaclean has a non-caustic Ph of Tivaclean is also a great ultrasonic cleaner. Tivaclean can be used at room temperature, however, heating the solution to a temperature between 160 and 180 F enhances its performance. Available in 1lb. jars, 5lb. bulk pack, 25lb. bulk pack, 50lb. bulk pack, 100lb. drum. LIQUID ELECTROCLEANER Krohn Heavy Duty Electrocleaner is a ready to use solution available in quarts, and is especially useful for cleaning castings and articles to be plated. The solution removes all grease, finger prints, and polishing compounds in about a minute. TIVABRITE Krohn Tivabrite is an electrostripper and polisher for yellow gold. In most cases, it can replace bombing, in a hydrogen peroxide/cyanide solution, with better results. Tivabrite is gets into spots, crevices, and undercuts that are impossible to reach with a polishing buff. Tivabrite is a unique combination of chemicals that, when mixed (4 oz. to the gallon) with an equal weight cyanide (sodium cyanide is preferred) and water and utilized with a reverse current, will provide a superior polishing action. Leaving yellow gold jewelry bright, clean, and polished. When used on white gold, Tivabrite gives the jewelry a matte finish similar to that obtained in bombing.
