1 EDITORIAL Welcome to wire and Tube 2018 Yet again the two number one trade fairs in their industries will host their guests in 16 exhibition halls, mapping the entire spectrum. We ll be welcoming over 70,000 trade visitors on those five days, and we re expecting to see the entire professional world coming to Düsseldorf again. In this year the hall layout is changing. Wire will be covered in Halls 9 to 14 and also in a part of Hall 16. The fair will focus on wire and cable machines, wire and cable production and trade and glass fiber technologies. Hall 13 will put the emphasis on mesh welding machines and spring making technology. Hall 15 will feature connection and fastening technologies, and the adjacent Hall 16 will have a section entitled Meet China s Expertise. This has proved its worth in the past and has again been requested by our Chinese exhibitors who want to present their innovative products in a compact and manageable area, within one hall. Tube, which will focus on tube manufacturing, profiles and the tube trade, will feature in Halls 3, 4, 7 and 16. Tube metal forming will be presented in Hall 5, and tube processing machines in Halls 6 and 7a. Plants and machinery will be showcased in Hall 7a, whereas Halls 16 and will be about tube accessories. Profiles will be presented in Halls 3 to 7a and Halls 16 and. China s Tube exhibitors will also occupy Hall 16. Although the two Chinese groups will share the same hall, they will occupy different sections within it. But there will also be enough space for further specifications and applied technologies, and of course Industrie 4.0 will continue to determine the course of the two leading trade fairs in The most strongly represented exhibitors at wire and Tube are from Italy, the UK, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Poland and Germany. Many of the overseas exhibitors come from the United States, India, Taiwan, South Korea and China. Most trade fair visitors will be coming from major production and consumer countries, such as Italy, Belgium, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Turkey and Germany. But we re also expecting an increasing number of expert visitors from overseas, i. e. the United States, Brazil, India and China. Despite various global crises in recent years, the entire industry is currently experiencing a global boom. It s an economic climate that encourages investment, not just in Europe. The demand for plants, machinery and products from the cable, wire and tube industries is also growing in other countries, and so we now have wire and Tube satellite trade fairs in Russia, India, China, Thailand and Brazil. Wire and Tube are going global and in fact at a time of global transformations. After all, no industry could function without wire, cables or tubes. Wire and Tube have grown steadily in Düsseldorf since the mid-1980s. Every two years Düsseldorf becomes the meeting place for key players of these industries. The success of these events has shown that we were right not to limit our focus to our domestic and European markets, but to pursue a worldwide focus and to develop more and more new markets. This is what gives our brands so much strength: wire and Tube join the best. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION wire & Tube 2018 to achieve record results Shortly before the start of the metal trade fair summit in Düsseldorf, the exhibition centre has received better bookings than ever before in the successful history of wire and Tube Düsseldorf, a history of over 30 years. Never before have so many square meters been reserved by exhibitors. Taken together, wire and Tube already have a net floor space occupancy of 120,000 m 2, which is about 10,000 m 2 more than the final figure for the two trade fairs in 2016 a result that was already outstanding. The number of exhibitors who have so far registered for wire 2018 is currently 1,180, representing 50 countries. Over 65,000 m 2 are occupied in Halls 9 to 18. The occupancy level for Tube in Halls 3 to 7.0, 7a and 16 to 18 is over 52,000 m 2, with 965 exhibitors from 53 countries. As before, the two Düsseldorf events have impressively demonstrated their number one positions as the world s leading trade fairs in their industries. Innovative technologies, new machinery and equipment as well as products and services from the wire, cable and tube industries will be presented on five days. wire 2018 will be held in Halls 9 to 16 and partly also in the temporary Hall 18. It will feature machines for the manufacturing and finishing of wire, tools and auxiliary materials for process engineering as well as materials, special wires and cables. The trade fair will also cover innovations in measurement and control engineering, test engineering and a range of specialist areas will have an even greater focus than previously on the potential of glass fibre technology. Glass fibre is more efficient, faster and often more reliable than conventional materials. In this way Messe Düsseldorf is responding to the increasing use of glass fibre technologies in the energy sector as well in the construction and communication industries. The segments of wire and cable machines, wire and cable production, the retail trade and glass fibre technologies will be presented in Halls 9 to 14 and 16, while connection and fastener technologies can be viewed in Hall 15. Mash welding machines and spring making can be found in Hall 13. Tube 2018 will present itself in Halls 3 to 7.0, 7a, 16 and and also partly in the temporary Hall 18. The range of showcased products will cover machinery and equipment for tube production, treatment and processing as well as raw materials, tubes and accessories, pre-owned machinery, process technology tools, auxiliary resources and measuring, control and test equipment. Furthermore, the line-up will include pipelines, OCTG technology, profiles and plastic tubes. Halls 16 and will feature tube accessories, while the tube trade and tube manufacturing can be found in Halls 3, 4, 7 and 16, and tube forming technology in Hall 5. Machinery and equipment as well as tube processing machines will be presented in Halls 6 and 7a. Profiles and plastic tubes will be shown in Halls 3 to 7.0, 7a, 16 and. Ongoing demand from China has made it possible to set up a Chinese Pavilion again. Chinese companies from the wire, cable and tube industries will be jointly represented in Hall 16 under the slogan Meet China s Expertise. 4 PRODUCT PREVIEW BvL offers system for cleaning specific castings Production and machining of all types of castings create comprehensive cleaning demands for the workpieces. The cleaning systems from BvL Oberflächentechnik offer various options for achieving the desired cleaning results. The portfolio of the company includes turntable systems for different workpiece dimensions (under the name Ocean ), rotary indexing systems for space-saving implementation of a variety of processes (Twister) as well as large parts systems (Pacific) and deburring processes with high pressure (Geyser). Foundries most often use the Yukon system type because these continuous systems are especially suitable for series production of components. For cleaning automotive parts in the production of a German foundry, a basket washing system NiagaraMO with an automated roller conveyor was linked to a manual customer interface. Corresponding workpiece carriers were manufactured, each for two sets of three identical components. The filled workpiece carriers are supplied to the roller conveyor with a feed carriage and loaded. After automated feeding into the cleaning chamber, a special nozzle system carries out allaround spray cleaning. The subsequent flooding of the entire chamber removes swarf from the inside of the components. Another spray cleaning step removes any remaining swarf and suspended particles from the component surface. The last particles are removed from the components using a separate tank and the required residual contamination value is achieved with a correspondingly configured fine filtration. An impulse blowing device uses compressed air to reduce the liquid present on the components, preparing them for efficient drying. The integrated vacuum drying then ensures the required absolute dryness. The roller conveyor finally transports the workpiece carriers away. For manual transport of the parts to the subsequent tightness test with the feed carriage, the system was programmed to provide a buffer space for three workpiece carriers in each case. This allows the BvL system to perfectly integrate into the overall customer process. BvL Oberflächentechnik GmbH Hall 6 / Booth D08 Seco/Warwick shows heat processing applications Seco/Warwick will showcase its latest innovations and technologies for heat processing of metal at wire & Tube. One innovation presented will be the VertiQuench solution heat treatment furnaces & integrated SHT + ageing systems. Its modern and intuitive PLC allows full visualization of each stage of the process, whereas the modular design is easy to operate and expand when increased production capacity is needed. Extremely tight temperature uniformity resulting from proprietary and proven airflow innovations, compact design, low utilities consumption yet very fast and full load immersion, and compliance with AMS2770, make VertiQuench a solution of choice for demanding aerospace applications. Apart from VertiQuench, Seco/Warwick will showcase annealing furnaces for aluminium alloy tubes & wires in soft tempers that guarantee low energy consumption and trouble free handling of load processed in the form of straight sections or coils. For certain applications, some tubes and wires are used in soft tempers suitable for bending, forming and other downstream operations. Seco/Warwick can provide solutions for annealing of extruded and drawn tubes as well as aluminium alloy wires in coils. The company will present pipes and tubes annealing heat treatment equipment: mesh belt and roller hearth furnaces for carbon steel tubes annealing, stainless steel pipes and tubes annealing and bright annealing, and custom designed batch and special conveyor furnaces for pipes and tubes annealing and bright annealing. To demonstrate a new dimension of heat treatment processes, Seco/Warwick will present one of its latest developments Seco/Lens, which leverages augmented reality technology to enhance operating the furnace, to speed up and improve diagnostic, research and development processes, increase the reliability of production and take control of the processes, even while being away from the devices. 5 PRODUCT PREVIEW Tube and pipe welders from EFD Induction Weldac is one of EFD Induction s high-output, solid-state tube and pipe welders. It covers a wide range of power sizes, from 50 kw up to 2,200 kw, and a frequency range of khz. It is a complete system consisting of a diode rectifier, inverter modules, output section, busbar and operator control system. Modular design makes it compact, saving valuable floor space and simplifying in-line integration and retrofitting. We can offer up to 1,100 kw in a one-cabinet solution. The welder is easy to operate, with a minimum of manual settings. Minimal operator intervention results in fewer operator errors and, consequently, increased throughput and efficiency. Coil changes take only seconds, with the frequency adjusting automatically to each tube dimension. Continuous electronic load matching secures full power output across a wide range of tube sizes, ensuring maximum welding speed for each size. No operator action is needed other that changing the coil size. Weldac s efficiency is one of the best in the market. Cooling water consumption is low, with no need for expensive de-ionized water. It eliminates the need for costly reactive power compensation capacitors by using diode rectifiers that result in a high, constant power factor (0.95) at all power levels. While the well proven IGBT transistor still is the main power transistor with high-current capability, EFD Induction will also offer SiC transistors as an alternative where they are of benefit to our customers. Weldac is supported by a global network of EFD Induction factories, workshops and offices. One can also benefit from the ongoing programme of operator training courses and component upgrades. EFD Induction Hall 6 / Booth C13 LOI offers different furnace technologies at wire & Tube Depending on the quality, process step and metallurgical requirements for the end product, there are different heat treatment processes and a whole series of alternative plant concepts for the various types of rod, wire and tube. The Tenova furnace companies Tenova LOI Thermprocess and Tenova Italimpianti offer the whole world of furnace technology and will present their heat treatment solutions at wire & Tube Stainless steel wire coils and tubes must be heated rapidly from ambient temperature to a sufficiently high temperature to ensure that the carbon is dissolved. At the same time, they must be heated sufficiently slowly to minimize grain propagation. The coils must then be rapidly cooled to ambient temperature to maintain the carbon in solution at the same time as preventing inter-granular corrosion. For the solution annealing of stainless steel tubes and wires, Tenova LOI Thermprocess offers open-fired rotary table/hearth furnaces with heat treatment temperatures up to 1,200 C and water or polymer quenching technology. Following shaping processes, non-alloyed and low-alloyed carbon steel grades often require heat treatment at temperatures from 450 to 1,050 C, such as stress relieving, recrystallizing, normalizing, soft annealing or spheroidizing in indirectly-fired continuous roller hearth furnaces. These furnaces are preferred for large capacities and continuous production. They feature slow, homogeneous heating, an adequate soaking area and cooling sections adapted to the specific materials treated. A variety of controlled atmospheres are used for heat treatment. The latest furnace plants feature carbon potential control and are suitable for CQI-9 quality in line with the high demands of the automobile industry. The Short Time Cycle (STC) Furnace works semi-continuously. This special furnace type is offered by Tenova Italimpianti within a highly standardized model range, with capacities from 4 to 56 t per batch. With 200 heat treatment recipes, this furnace type can be used very flexibly. Semi-finished products made from special steels are heattreated by a variety of processes to improve their cold working properties. Key factors are the accuracy of the heating process, soaking at a suitable temperature and the quenching speed. For this scenario Tenova Italimpianti offers a solution with a set of box-type furnaces for heat treatment of wire and rod coils installed close to a stainless steel tank which is used for quenching. The objectives of heat-treating rolled wire are to obtain low strength for subsequent cold working and a defined crystalline structure with spheroidal cementite. 6 PRODUCT PREVIEW SMS is turning the spotlight on digitalization SMS group sees digitalization and Industrie 4.0 as key challenges that are set to profoundly change the tube and wire industry in the years to come. The company is turning the spotlight on these topics at the wire & Tube trade fair, where SMS group will be looking at how digitalization is changing the whole value-added chain and enabling greater efficiency, higher quality, and more flexibility from a number of different angles. The first impetus arising from digitalization and Industrie 4.0 concerns the design and manufacture of machines and components for the production of tube and wire itself. It will be demonstrated by using the example of a mill stand for a cold pilger mill, which is made with the aid of additive manufacturing processes. The component geometry of a mill stand, which up to now has been made by machining techniques, was optimized in terms of the stresses generated so that the number of strokes and thus the productivity were enhanced significantly. Further examples of SMS group s activities in the additive manufacturing growth market, which are to be shown at the fair, are the competence centre for 3D printing, which is being built in Mönchengladbach, as well as 3D printed components. They show an enhanced functionality, they weigh less and have shorter delivery periods. The second topic shows the possibilities that digitalization offers for the production process. The aim of the smart mill is to use data and the corresponding parameters as a basis for business and process control related decisions. A realistic map of the process with precise measurements is required for the collection of reliable process data. This type of measuring system for tube, pipe, bar, and section mills is to be displayed in cooperation with TBK Automatisierung und Messtechnik GmbH, an SMS group company. The system measures up to 5,000 contours per second with laser light section sensors during the rolling process. Local atypical anomalies on the surface can be detected on the basis of the 3D models, generated by high resolution cross-sectional measurements. The direct transfer of the measurement readings to the mill stand control system allows roll setting adjustments to be made during the rolling process and thus saves time and money by directly monitoring the production process. Digitalization is also creating new opportunities for plant service. Smart Maintenance Solutions are aimed at enhancing the availability of the plant and the quality of the end products on a long-term basis by combining software solutions. The creation of a digital plant structure will offer maintenance teams centralized access to all the relevant parameters in future. The information required will be provided, for example, by the edoc electronic parts catalog, the IMMS (Integrated Maintenance Management System), or the Genius CM system (Condition Monitoring). The link to smart training courses will also be presented at the fair using augmented reality. Digital products and platforms round off the range of presentations at wire & Tube They form the basis for intelligent, digital services, and implement the secure, digital exchange of information between SMS group and its customers. One example is the platform for piercer plugs for seamless tube rolling mills, through which you can process orders and check the status of each order 24 hours a day. Furthermore, a comment function ensures easy communication, as notes referencing the relevant customer order and SMS group employee can be entered. The option of order-based communication means the whole process is more transparent, change requests are easier to follow, and orders can be split if different delivery times for partial deliveries are required.
