ASEAN s Investment Bank Brand ASEAN Woman 2015 / 2016 The Women s Voice of the ASEAN Opportunity
The Brand ASEAN Woman Project A FORUM for the exchange of effective strategies & working solutions to advance the economic status of ASEAN women.
Our Beliefs IT IS TIME WE CHANGE Because diversity in teams is proven to increase innovation and collaboration. IT IS TIME WE ENCOURAGE Because an ASEAN woman is more empowered today than ever before. IT IS TIME WE CAPITALISE Because when women are economically empowered, their talents have a positive impact on the progress of their nations. IT IS TIME WE EMPOWER Because women in the workforce are substantial drivers of growth and future success for ASEAN. IT IS TIME WE INSPIRE Because entrepreneurship is a pivotal factor for advancing economic opportunities for women to contribute to the economy. IT IS TIME WE SUPPORT And it s time to change the conversation. We ve been talking to ourselves for too long.
Learnings from 2015
of ASEAN s population is women. 50%Half Women are increasingly influential in ASEAN s growth. Women make 70% of all consumer purchases. 70% YET 90% Women reinvest 90% of their income into family s health & education. Still face significant barriers in achieving ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES CORPORATE LEADERSHIP
Holding Up Half the Sky: The Value of Diversity in Leadership Gender diversity is a competitive advantage and a critical business issue Women in the workforce are substantial drivers of growth and future success in ASEAN Diversity in teams increases innovation and collaboration ASEAN women are more empowered in the market than ever before Personal Branding: A Key Leadership Strategy for Women BE BOLD. BE DISRUPTIVE. BE AUTHENTIC. In a world of constant reinvention, women need to maintain brand authenticity and integrity. Women are Leading Adopters of Technology The internet Entrepreneurship Is pivotal for advancing sustainable economic opportunities for women. Mass Urbanisation Will create 10 s of millions of newly prosperous women. TODAY = 81 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS Has given women a voice Spawned the sharing economy Changed our perceptions of our identity Facilitated the growing of networks 2030= 163 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS
INVESTING IN WOMEN UNLEASHING OPPORTUNITIES SUSTAINABLE, INCLUSIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH
The Biggest Lesson of 2015 There is no glass ceiling, only a thick layer of men. Laura Liswood, Secretary General at the Council of Women World Leaders LET THE MEN IN: The women s conversation must be everybody s conversation. Conversations are dominated by women talking to women. The same old issues are raised. Progress is slow. To accelerate change, we need to stop treating gender as solely a women s issue. Engaging Men is Crucial in Moving Forward.
The Big Conversation for 2016: Gender Equality is a Corporate Responsibility If engaging a critical mass of men is crucial to moving forward, what can lead more men to champion women s leadership? CHANGE should be led by corporates Share your ideas LET S COLLABORATE IT S TIME WE ENCOURAGE CHANGE should be championed by all
The Women in Business Perspective How does the TPP offer opportunities for women s economic advancement? Tan Sri Dr. Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria Secretary-General, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Datuk Shireen Muhiudeen Founder, Corston-Smith Asset Management At Invest Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, a Brand ASEAN Woman Collaboration with Bursa Malaysia Our speakers gave an opportunity for a thorough understanding of the benefits of the TPP on specific sectors and areas of business, and as women in business, how best to capitalise on them to elevate the positioning of women.
The Women in Business Perspective Advantages & Opportunities of the TPP The TPP makes reference to women s empowerment & economic growth, calling on cooperation to help women access the benefits of the agreement. How can women access the benefits of the TPP? Elevating Women s Contribution to Economic Growth & Development Growth in women-owned businesses, primarily SMEs, can increase women s participation in the workforce and enhance their economic development. How do we encourage entrepreneurship? Taking Action on Equality in Business Advancing women s opportunities in business is an economic imperative for better business performance and international competitiveness. How do we break gender norms & stereotypes? Share your ideas LET S COLLABORATE IT S TIME WE CAPITALISE
Let the Men In Changing champions and making Women in Leadership a Corporate Responsibility. Professor Loredana Padurean, Asia School of Business, chaired a lively discussion featuring two influential men. Sir Bob Geldof, rockstar and humanitarian - widely recognised for his activism, especially his anti-poverty efforts and business initiatives in Africa. Dr. Farish A. Noor, political scientist and historian part of a research cluster on the temporary development of transnational, religio-political networks across Southeast Asia, at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
Getting More Women into Leadership Roles We know what must be done. Research has pointed out problems, with little help in identifying solutions. When do we pass that challenge to corporates? Changing the Responsibility Creating a Gender Neutral Culture Culture creates change, not policy. Gender neutral culture lies with organisations, not with individuals. How do we create corporate role models? Making Gender Inequality Everybody s Issue Too many gender initiatives are focused solely on changing women. It s the wrong debate. What must change to make this understood? Share your ideas LET S COLLABORATE IT S TIME WE CHANGE
Advancing Women in the ASEAN Economy To achieve genuine gender parity requires a fundamental cultural shift across societies. How do we recast the cultural stereotypes? Unleashing Potential Creating More Women-owned SMEs SMEs are our engine of growth, but women only own 20%. There are many barriers to women in business. How do we break down those barriers? Empowering Women to Achieve Empowering women speeds up development. But career opportunities are lower for women. How can we stop men from keeping opportunities within their own circle? Share your ideas LET S COLLABORATE IT S TIME WE EMPOWER
Support through Sponsorship & Reverse Mentorship Up-and-coming women need to gain visibility at senior levels, support in their personal growth and to create opportunities to break down unconscious bias. How do we encourage a more supportive culture? Networking for Advancement Encouraging Positive Action Networking breaks down barriers. But women do not network as much as men. Can we facilitate networking for women? Making Role Models More Visible Current Women in Power should be in the forefront among opinion leaders in business and politics. What must we do to get our stronger voices heard? Share your ideas LET S COLLABORATE IT S TIME WE INSPIRE
