7 10 11 Professionals Choe, Jeong Yeol Mr. Jeong Yeol Choe is a partner in Yulchon s IP group. Mr. Choe served as a judge for twenty-one years at various courts, including the Korean Patent Court and the Seoul Central District Court. After his appointment as a judge, he conducted research on patent and copyright law at the George Washington University Law School. During his three year tenure as a judge at the Korean Patent Court, he gained extensive experience in a wide range of intellectual property cases. Mr. Choe authored the trademark section of the Patent Trial Practice Guidelines and co-authored books such as New Principles of Patent Law and Entertainment Law. He has also published a large number of articles covering areas of IP, information technology, and entertainment. Mr. Choe also served as a lecturer at various institutions, including the Judicial Research and Training Institute, where he gave lectures on a wide range of intellectual property related topics to trainees, attorneys, and judges. In addition, Mr. Choe was a member of the board of bar examiners for the Korean Patent Bar, and he is an active arbitrator at the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board in the entertainment law section, and an expert appraiser at the Korean Copyright Commission, and a vice-president at Korea Intellectual Property Lawyers Association(KIPLA). Byun, Hyun Chul Mr. Hyun Chul Byun is a partner in Yulchon s IP Group. Before joining Yulchon, he served as a judge for 23 years at various courts, including the Seoul High Court (Chief Judge), and the Patent Court. During the two years and seven months he served as the presiding judge of the Patent Court, he gained significant experience in a wide range of intellectual property cases including patents, and trademarks. Mr. Byun brings depth of knowledge and wealth of experience in relation to intellectual property litigation/arbitration. From 1999 to 2000, Mr. Byun furthered his study as a Visiting Scholar to Hitotsubashi University in Japan, and from 2005 to 2006, he served as a lecturer at the Judicial Research and Training Institute. 8 12 13 Kim, Cheol Hwan Mr. Cheol Hwan Kim is a partner in Yulchon s IP group. During his twelve years of service as a judge, Mr. Kim served as a judge at various courts including the Patent Court ( ), and Seoul Central District Court ( ), where he dealt with numerous cases relating to patents, trademarks, design, copyright, unfair competition and trade secret. Mr. Kim also served as a lecturer for trial judges at the International Intellectual Property Training Institute ( ) and taught trial decision drafting at the Korean Intellectual Property Tribunal (2005). He has authored many articles on topics such as Assessing Compensatory Damages for Patent Infringements and participated in writing books including the Patent Act Annotated, Trademark Act Annotated, Patent Case Studies, Japanese Copyright Law, and Patent Trial Practice Guidelines. In 2006, Mr. Kim researched IP issues at the Duke University School of Law. He also served as a member of the Consultative Committee on Protection of the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property, which was established in Son, Kum Ju Mr. Kum Ju Son is a partner at Yulchon, primarily practicing in the areas of antitrust, intellectual property, broadcasting and telecommunication, international dispute resolution and cultural industry. Mr. Son received his LL.M. degree from Seoul National University and served as a visiting scholar at UNC School of Law. Mr. Han has deep expertise in virtually all aspects of intellectual property, as he served as a judge for 16 years at various courts in Korea. Notably, Mr. Han served as a judge at the Patent Court of Korea ( ), as a research judge at the intellectual property unit of the Supreme Court of Korea ( ), and as a presiding judge at the civil appellate court in Suwon ( ). While serving as a judge, Mr. Han authored many opinions providing legal criteria and tests in precedent-setting cases, including cases relating to the inventive step requirement for patentability, method of use inventions for pharmaceuticals, similarity of trademarks, and patent infringement. Mr. Han is acknowledged as a highly respected intellectual property professional in both legal and academic circles. Mr. Han has been an active member of the Korea Patent Law Society since He has also lectured on patent law at various institutions, including the Judicial Research and Training Institute, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the Seoul Bar Association, the Korea Patent Attorney Association, Seoul National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology (KAIST), the Korean Intellectual Property Association (KINPA), and the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea. Mr. Han also actively promotes the improvement of patent litigation and patent law by advising the Supreme Court and the Korean Intellectual Property Office and by being involved in various committees of the National Assembly. Lim, Hyeong Joo Hyeong Joo Lim is a partner who practices primarily in the area of intellectual property law. He graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Civil, Urban & Geo-systems Engineering. Mr. Lim is experienced in litigation related to intellectual property, including patents, trade secrets, design, and trademarks. 10 16 17 Patent Attorneys Kim, Seung Jo Seung Jo Kim is a patent attorney at Yulchon who mainly focuses on patent litigation. In the nineteen years before joining Yulchon in 2011, Mr. Kim served as a patent examiner, an administrative patent judge and a director at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, and as a technical adviser at the Korean Patent Court. During the 19 years, he acquired extensive experience in patent examination and invalidation trials of electrical and electronic patents. He also served as a lecturer at various institutions including the International Intellectual Property Training Institute. He obtained an LL.M. in Intellectual Property from the University of Washington School of Law in 2002, after which he worked as a technical advisor at SEED IP Law Group based in Seattle ( ). Han, Hyun Sook, Ph.D. Hyun Sook Han is a patent attorney at Yulchon, where she mainly focuses on patent litigation, patent portfolio creation and management, patent strategy counseling, patent-fda matters, and patent evaluation. Ms. Han has particular expertise in licensing and technology transfer in the fields of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals, foods, polymers, cosmetics, household products and medical devices. His practice focuses on intellectual property rights, technology transfer, licensing, IP asset management, Internet laws, personal information protection, cyber security and labor. In addition, he also has expertise in e-discovery, forensic, internal investigation, computer security and compliance. He served as the general counsel for Oracle Korea, Inc. when interest in personal information protection was just starting in the Korean society, and successfully defended the company in civil and criminal cases. Subsequently at Kim & Chang, he handled various civil and criminal matters and also advised many clients in a variety of industries on personal information and technology related issues. He has been involved in legislation of the Korean Copyright Act, Computer Program Protection Act and other laws related to technology. Prior to joining Yulchon, Mr. Lee served as senior legal counsel at Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. for six years. Mr. Lee was also a partner at the law firm of Dergosits and Noah LLP and also served as counsel at the Procter & Gamble Co. and Baker Botts, LLP. Having significant experience as in-house counsel, Mr. Lee understands the concerns of both the legal departments and the business units. Mr. Lee personally managed patent litigation throughout the world for Samsung s Semiconductor, Telecommunications, Visual Display, and LED Business Units. Representative venues include the US International Trade Commission, the US District Courts (e.g., EDTX, EDVA, NDCA, Delaware, and Wisconsin), the German district courts, and the Japanese district courts. Representative technologies include semiconductor memory, applications processors (APs), LEDs, televisions, cell phones, printers, hard disk drives, and lab-on-a-chip (LOCs). Mr. Lee has hands-on experience with every aspect of US litigation, include setting up efficient and cost-effective ediscovery processes and protocols. 12 20 Lyou, Woo Rim Woo Lyou is a U.S. attorney in the firm s Intellectual Property Group where he specializes in intellectual property law, international dispute resolution and IP licensing and transactions. Prior to joining Yulchon, Mr. Lyou served as a foreign associate at Yoon & Yang LLC, where he advised and represented both major Korean conglomerates and multinational corporations on intellectual property, antitrust and unfair trade practices. As a legal counsel at CJ E&M, he drafted, reviewed, negotiated and executed numerous agreements having an aggregate value over $100 Million USD for CJ E&M s various contents, including film, television, music, performing arts and games.
