A pioneer of the large format retail in India, Kishore Biyani is disrupting the disruptors in the retail sector. Having built a $3.5 billion retail empire with more than a thousand retail stores in more than 250 cities that cater to nearly 500 million customers, he is set to usher in a new retail revolution. With data on the largest number of consumers in India, he has an edge on the e commerce startups. India is projected to become the third largest economy in the world by 2030 with a GDP of $10 trillion, half of which will come from the digital economy. India s growing consumption of information, entertainment, education, food, appliances, electronics, automobiles, travel, houses etc will intensify as the country s population will approach 1.5 billion and this population will get more connected within and with the rest of the world. At the same time, India will also be the world s 3

4 second largest investor by 2030 and its global investments would double by that year. India will also be a global frontline for innovation as its energy, material, trade and security needs will multiply. Indian businesses will have to align their technologies, supply chains, market reach, creativity, agility and scale to keep up with this transition. The advances in technology are redefining industrial structures and processes and they are disrupting business models, supply chains and work. The 4th Industrial Revolution offers India an opportunity to make up for the lost opportunities and use IT, AI, robotics, printed manufacturing, internet of machines etc to upgrade its industrial capabilities. However, this revolution also poses a socio economic challenge to a labour surplus country. India s large young population would be a great asset only if it had the necessary knowledge and skills to harness the powers of new technologies. A concentration of knowhow with few knowledge elites combined with reduced need for labour will exacerbate inequality and threaten political disruption. Though any resistance to the advance of autonomous machines is futile, India must find ways to gain from the new industrial revolution instead of becoming its victim.
