All students must be checked out of the program by 3:00 pm and must vacate the dorm by 5:00pm. Shuttle times will be posted in elevator and in hallway. Please be in the lobby 20 minutes prior to your departure. Note that there are two airports BWI (Baltimore Washington) and DCA (Reagan National). Make sure you are on the right shuttle. 7 Guest Speaker Biographies Secretary Jeh Johnson, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Charles Johnson was sworn in on December 23, 2013 as the fourth Secretary of Homeland Security. Prior to joining DHS, Secretary Johnson served as General Counsel for the Department of Defense, where he was part of the senior management team and led the more than 10,000 military and civilian lawyers across the Department. As General Counsel of the Defense Department, Secretary Johnson oversaw the development of the legal aspects of many of our nation s counterterrorism policies, spearheaded reforms to the military commissions system at Guantanamo Bay in 2009, and co authored the 250 page report that paved the way for the repeal of Don t Ask, Don t Tell in Secretary Johnson s career has included extensive service in national security, law enforcement, and as an attorney in private corporate law practice. Secretary Johnson was General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force from 1998 to 2001, and he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1989 to In private law practice, Secretary Johnson was a partner with the New York City based law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. In 2004, Secretary Johnson was elected a Fellow in the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, and he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Secretary Johnson graduated from Morehouse College in 1979 and received his law degree from Columbia Law School in Ambassador Žygimantas Pavilionis (Lithuania) Žygimantas Pavilionis is a career diplomat who became ambassador of Lithuania to the United States in August Born on August 22, 1971, in Vilnius, Pavilionis grew up with parents who prized higher education; his father, Roland Pavilionis, being an academician and his mother, Mary Pavilionienė Venus, a professor. He attended college at Vilnius University, where he earned a master s degree in philosophy and postgraduate diploma in international relations. In 1993, Pavilionis joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked in the Western European Division, with the rank of third secretary. He was assistant director of policy from , before moving to the Ministry of European Integration, Department of Political Cooperation. He worked in Brussels, Belgium, at the Lithuanian Permanent Mission from Pavilionis was then promoted to lead the Ministry of Foreign Affairs European Integration Department from Most recently, he served as ambassador at large and chief coordinator for Lithuania s presidency of the Community of Democracies, as well as chief coordinator for the Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Pavilionis and his wife, Lina Pavilioniene, have four sons. Dr. Michael Yaffe (U.S. Department of State) Dr. Michael Yaffe is currently a Senior Advisor to the Special Envoy for Israeli Palestinian Negotiations at the U.S. Department of State. Between 2001 and 2012, he was the Academic Dean and Distinguished Professor of Strategic Studies at the National Defense University s Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies. Previously, Dr. Yaffe was a career Foreign Affairs Officer in the State Department, concentrating on Middle East peace negotiations, regional security, and non proliferation. He served on U.S. delegations to the Madrid Middle East Peace Process, Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, International Atomic Energy Agency, NATO, and other international forums, and is the recipient of two Superior Honors Awards and a Group Meritorious Honors Award. Dr. Yaffe was a post doctoral fellow at Harvard University s John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies, Research Associate at Harvard s Center for Science and International Affairs, and Peace Scholar at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He earned his Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, his Masters from the London School of Economics, and his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Paul Lisnek Dr. Paul Lisnek has won several Emmys, Beacons, Tellys and Cablefax Awards for his work as a television anchor, radio host and author. Dr. Lisnek hosts Politics Tonight a LIVE television talk show seen in Chicagoland every weeknight on CLTV. He anchors Newsmakers on CNN Headline News, hosts Political Update, and Broadway in Chicago Backstage on the Comcast Network. Dr. Lisnek is the Political Analyst for WGN TV appearing on its news programs. He has appeared as a legal and political commentator for NBC News on The Today Show and Nightly News, on CNN s Anderson Cooper 360, and M TV. Among hundreds of interviews, Dr. Lisnek has interviewed President Obama, Sir Elton John, Sting, Betty White, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, David Schwimmer, Cyndi Lauper, Adam Lambert, Steve Carrel, Matt Damon, many senators, congressmen and governors. Dr. Lisnek is also a regular guest host on WGN radio in Chicago, one of the country s top talk radio stations. He appears as a newscaster in the film Were the World Mine and will also appearing the film Heirlooms and will be filming The Haunted Laugh later this summer. Dr. Lisnek is the author of 13 books including Quality Mind, Quality Life, Winning the Mind Game, and The Hidden Jury. Prior to his career in TV and radio, Dr. Lisnek was an assistant dean and professor at Loyola Law School in Chicago, taught at the University of Illinois, and Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu. 7
