4 Welcome to Ascend Canada s 2015 Fall Conference. Over the past four years, our organization has built a network of influential leaders across Canada. We ve organized numerous careerdevelopment workshops and created executive mentorship opportunities that have helped further the careers of our PanAsian members and, in turn, added great value to companies. We ve achieved a great deal in four years and we re just getting started. Together, we ve taken Ascend Canada to a new level of influence and relevancy. Our membership continues to grow and so does support from our expanding group of corporate partners. Decision makers now see Ascend Canada as the goto organization to help their companies gain a competitive edge, by helping them understand and uncover the potential of PanAsian leaders. With all of this momentum coming into the Fall Conference, we wanted to deliver our bestever line up of speakers and panelists. As such, I m thrilled to present an incredible keynote panel tonight. We have four brilliant and influential CEOs joining us for a candid and informative discussion on diversity in leadership: MarcAndré Blanchard, Chair and CEO, McCarthy Tétrault; Mary Forrest, President and CEO, Munich Re, North America (Life); Donald Guloien, President and CEO, Manulife; and Bharat Masrani, Group President and CEO, TD Bank Group. I hope you enjoy this evening. Furthermore, I hope you hear something interesting, spark up a conversation with a new acquaintance, or commit to taking a step forward in your career. 6 Wesley Ng is a partner in the Corporate Group of the Stikeman Elliott LLP's Toronto office and head of the firm's Technology Practice Group, where he advises clients across a broad range of industries on privacy and social media issues, including privacy complaints, privacy breaches, notifications and working with the relevant regulators in connection with privacy investigations. Wesley's practice focuses on information technology, ecommerce and biotechnology transactions, as well as privacyrelated matters. He advises on all aspects of CASL compliance, and he regularly assists clients with outsourcings, licensing, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, financing, online trading and technology development. 7 2015 Fall Conference Thursday, September 17, 2015 Shielding Against Bias workshop New this year, this workshop will explore the biases and blindspots we may experience or possess ourselves. We encourage active discussion in this workshop, where we will propose actions and strategies we can implement to shield against biases in the workplace and our everyday lives. Ritu Bhasin Founder and Principal, Bhasin Consulting Inc. Ritu is the Founder and Principal of Bhasin Consulting Inc. Recognized globally for her diversity and leadership expertise, Ritu delivers programming, consulting, and coaching across a range of people management areas with a focus on leadership development, diversity and inclusion, and the advancement of women. Ritu is certified to administer Cultural Competence assessment tools including the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ICS). She is also certified in neuroscience coaching strategies for leadership growth. Ritu has coached hundreds of professionals, and now coaches CSuite leaders and other executives on building their Cultural Competence to be more inclusive. Before founding Bhasin Consulting Inc., Ritu spent ten years in the legal profession where she first practiced civil litigation, followed by seven years on the senior management team of a preeminent Canadian law firm as Director of Legal Talent. 07

9 2015 Fall Conference Thursday, September 17, 2015 Stephen Shea is EY Canada s Managing Partner, Talent. He is responsible for leading all facets of the firm s people strategy for both partners and staff. Throughout Stephen s career, he has provided leadership through counselling and mentoring to people at all levels within the firm. Stephen is CoChair of EY s Inclusiveness Steering Committee and a frequent speaker on topics related to diversity, inclusion and human equity at EY and in the business community. He is also the Chair of the Employer Panel for Caregivers, a federal government initiative. Stephen is a CPA, CA, and holds a Bachelor of Science (Physiology) from the University of Toronto and a Master s of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business. Stephen Shea Managing Partner, Talent, EY Wendy Tsau is a senior marketing and communications professional, currently advising Scotiabank on leadership and changemanagement communications in her role as Senior Manager, Communications & Special Projects. Prior to joining Scotiabank, Wendy led the national Public Relations and Internal Communications teams at EY in Canada. She also worked at Dow Jones Newswires as a writer and editor for seven years. Wendy recently joined Ascend Canada as VP, Marketing & Communications. Wendy holds a B.A. (Honours) from Queen s University and a M.A. in Journalism from the University of Western Ontario. 10 President's remarks Kelvin Tran is Senior Vice President and Chief Auditor at TD Bank Group, where he leads more than 400 employees globally. Kelvin has been with TD Bank for over 14 years in progressively senior roles, including Head of Enterprise Decision Support, Treasury and Balance Sheet Management and Chief Accountant. Most recently, Kelvin was the Chief Financial Officer of TD Securities, where he oversaw the daytoday activities of its global finance departments, and led the teams responsible for capital management, valuation policies, productivity, financial planning and management reporting, analysis and control. Kelvin is Chair of both the TDBG Visible Minority Committee and the TD Securities Visible Minority Committee. Kelvin is also a past member of the board of directors of the Canadian Diabetes Association and past chair of its audit committee. 11 2015 Fall Conference Thursday, September 17, 2015 CEO Panel Discussion on Diversity in Leadership Alex Johnston leads the Catalyst Canada office and is responsible for shaping a strategy for Catalyst s continued growth and member engagement in Canada. Prior to her role with Catalyst, Alex practiced law, with a general corporate and commercial law practice in mergers and acquisitions, private placements and corporate reorganizations, at Goodmans LLP, before joining the office of Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty in 2003, where she served as Executive Director of Policy. A longtime advocate for women, Alex was a founding member of the first studentrun sexual assault center in Canada, served as a legal advisor in a shelter for women and children, and after living in China for two years, began graduate studies on Chinese women s legal rights and experience with the justice system. Alex Johnson Executive Director of Catalyst Canada Moderator Alex is fluently bilingual and holds a BA, LLB, and BCL from McGill University. She grew up in Montreal and now lives in Toronto where she and her husband are raising their three young children. MarcAndré Blanchard is the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of McCarthy Tétrault, one of Canada s leading national law firms. He also provides advice to companies on governance, strategic and public policy issues. As Chair and Chief Executive Officer, MarcAndré has introduced significant changes, including intensively pursuing a growth agenda and implementing an innovative service delivery model. In 2014, The Financial Times recognized McCarthy Tétrault as the most innovative law firm in Canada and as one of the most innovative law firms in North America. In 2013, the Canadian Lawyer Magazine recognized MarcAndré as one of Canada s top 25 most influential lawyers. He has received many other awards and accolades for his leadership and expertise, including the Catalyst Canada Honours recognizing his leadership as a diversity champion. MarcAndré Blanchard Chair and CEO, McCarthy Tétrault Panelist MarcAndré is a board member of Canada s Heart & Stroke Foundation, The Conference Board of Canada, the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC), and the WoodGreen Foundation and the advisory board of Glendon College. He is an active member in campaign cabinet for the Université de Montréal, United Way Toronto, as well as an active member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO). From , he was President of the Québec Liberal Party and actively participated in the transition teams of several governments. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Université de Montréal (1988), a Master s degree in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science (1990), and Master s degrees in both Public Administration and International Affairs specializing in International Trade Law from the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University (1992). He was called to the Québec bar in Mr. Blanchard is married to Monique Ryan and has two sons, Laurent and Adrien. 11
12 Mary Forrest is President and CEO, Munich Re, North America (Life). In this capacity, Mary oversees the two largest Life reinsurance business units within the Munich Re Group. She is responsible for Munich Re s Life and Health reinsurance operations in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. The North American organization has over 400 employees, located in Canada and the United States. Within the insurance industry, Mary is an active member in the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA), participating on several committees over the years. She is the current Chair of the Board of Directors. Mary has been a speaker at numerous industry meetings, including the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and Canadian Reinsurance Conference. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto, and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries as well as of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Mary Forrest President and CEO, Munich Re North America (Life) Panelist Donald Guloien is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife. A 34year company veteran, he is a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Company s Executive Committee. Donald is a Director of the Geneva Association, a member of the Mayor of Shanghai's International Business Leaders' Advisory Council, a member of the Board of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the Immediate Past Chair and a Director of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, a Trustee of The Hospital for Sick Children, a Governor of Branksome Hall and a member of the Campaign Cabinet for United Way. Donald is also a member of the Ticker Club, and the World Presidents' Organization. Donald has been named International Business Executive of the Year by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, awarded The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal, and received the Arbor Award for his many contributions to the University of Toronto. He was ranked among the top 5 Highest Rated CEOs in Canada in Glassdoor.com s 2015 Employees Choice Awards, based on assessments by current and past employees. Donald A. Guloien President & Chief Executive Officer, Manulife Panelist Donald started in Corporate Planning and during his career at Manulife has held a variety of leadership roles in insurance and investments operations, global acquisitions and business development. Before assuming his current role, he was Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, where he was recognized as a leading global investment executive. Donald is actively involved with the University of Toronto, where he is a member of the Campaign Cabinet. Donald holds a B. Comm. from the University of Toronto. 12
13 2015 Fall Conference Thursday, September 17, 2015 Bharat Masrani was appointed Group President and Chief Executive Officer of TD Bank Group on November 1, Bharat has more than 27 years of banking experience and is a member of the TD Bank Group Board of Directors. He most recently served as Chief Operating Officer for TD Bank Group from July Bharat Masrani Group President and CEO, TD Bank Group Panelist Bharat has held many senior executive roles across the bank. In 2006, he became the President of TD Banknorth, and in 2007, President and CEO. In 2008, he was named Group Head U.S. Personal and Commercial Banking and President and CEO of TD Bank, America s Most Convenient Bank. Previous to his role at TD Bank, he served as Vice Chair and Chief Risk Officer of TD Bank Group, a position he held from May Bharat also served as Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of TD Waterhouse Investor Services in Europe; Senior Vice President, Corporate Finance and CoHead in Europe; Vice President and Country Head for India; and Vice President and Head, Corporate Banking Canada. He began his banking career with TD Bank Group in 1987 as a Commercial Lending Trainee. Bharat received a Bachelor of Administrative Studies degree with Honours from York University in 1978 and obtained his Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business, York University in He and his wife, Shabnam, currently make their home in Toronto and have two grown children. 13
14 Closing remarks Gaurav Upadhya is Senior Vice President, Product & Insurance Risk Management at Manulife. Gaurav is responsible for the company's global risk management framework with respect to product development, pricing, underwriting and claims management. He joined Manulife in 1997 and has held actuarial and risk management roles of increasing seniority. Gaurav is currently Chair of Manulife's Toronto Actuarial Resource Committee that oversees the actuarial development program in Toronto. Gaurav holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) degree from Queen's University and a Masters in Math degree from University of Waterloo. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA) and the Society of Actuaries (FSA), holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA) designations and is a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Gaurav serves on the University of Toronto Actuarial Program Advisory Board, the University of Waterloo Master of Actuarial Science Advisory Board, and the Board of Ascend Canada.
