1 Papers, (Predominantly, 1930s-1987) 42 linear feet 40 storage boxes & 2 small flats Accession # 986 DALNET # OCLC # Detroit Typographical Union (DTU) No. 18 was established in 1852, when Detroit printers, along with printers in thirteen other cities, met in Cincinnati to form the National Typographical Union (The NTU became the International Typographical Union (ITU) with the admission of Canadian printing locals in 1869). In the Detroit area, the DTU represented workers not only at the city s three major dailies (The Detroit News, The Detroit Free Press, and The Detroit Times), but also those who worked for suburban newspaper publications and the non-newsprint publishers of the Detroit metropolitan area. The collection also documents the activities of the Detroit Mailers Union. The papers of the Detroit Typographical Union No. 18 contain minutes, including several bound volumes of DTU and Lansing Typographical Union minutes dating from the turn of the century, correspondence, arbitration and grievance files, mortuary benefits records, negotiations and apprenticeship training materials, lockout, strike and pension records, and documentation of attempted ITU mergers with the Teamsters and Communications Workers unions.
