KING AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE THE SUPREME COURT: APPOINTMENTS TO AND STATUTORY AND CONSTITUTIONAL INTERPRETATION BY THE COURT IN BANKRUPTCY CASES Prior to assuming this position in 2008, he was the Alston and Bird Professor of Law and Political science at Duke University from , and before that was a professor at the University of southern California Law school from , including as the sydney m. irmas Professor of Public interest Law, Legal Ethics, and Political science. he also has taught at DePaul College of Law and UCLA Law school. he is the author of ten books, including The Case Against the Supreme Court, published by Viking in 2014, and two books to be published by yale University Press in 2017, Closing the Courthouse Doors: How the Supreme Court Made Your Rights Unenforceable and Renewing Free Speech on College Campuses (with howard Gillman). he also is the author of more than 200 law review articles. he writes a weekly column for the Orange County Register, monthly columns for the ABA Journal and the Daily Journal, and frequent op-eds in newspapers across the country. in January 2014, National Jurist magazine named Dean Chemerinsky as the most influential person in legal education in the United states. Chemerinsky holds a law degree from harvard Law school and a bachelor s degree from northwestern University. Dan excels in the development and implementation of cost reduction and restructuring plans as well as restructuring negotiations between companies and their creditors. he educates company ownership and management on realistic business plans, implementation of cost and liquidity improvements and effective end-game strategies for clients. Dan collaborates effectively with management on issues related to turnaround, restructuring plans and business sales. Dan has achieved positive and quantifiable results for companies in the following industries: automotive, aerospace, capital equipment, metals, healthcare, transportation, food, distribution, oil and gas, and real estate. 3 REBECCA HUME rebecca hume is a lawyer at kobre & kim, a firm focused exclusively on disputes and investigations, particularly involving fraud and misconduct. KENNEY BriAn F. kenney was sworn in on september 1, he filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the honorable stephen s. mitchell. 3:15-4:15 pm ASSET PROTECTION TRUSTS HOW TO MAKE THEM AND HOW TO BREAK THEM Judge kenney was a principal in the Tysons Corner office of miles & stockbridge, P.C., a 200-plus attorney firm with offices in maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. he represented creditors, debtors, and bankruptcy trustees in the Eastern District of Virginia, and elsewhere, since becoming a member of the Virginia state Bar in Judge kenney also was certified as a business bankruptcy specialist by the American Board of Certification. he has served two terms as President of the northern Virginia Bankruptcy Bar Association, and served on its Board of Directors. Further, Judge kenney had served two terms on the Virginia state Bar Board of Governors for the Bankruptcy section of the state Bar. Judge kenney had served as an Alexandria Division representative on the standing Committee on Local Bankruptcy rules for the U.s. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Until his appointment, Judge kenney served as a representative on the Eastern District of Virginia s Alexandria Division Bankruptcy Bar Liaison Committee. Judge kenney graduated in 1980 from Virginia Commonwealth University, magna cum laude, with a degree in political science. 5 NEAL LEVIN neal LEVin is the Team Leader of the Firm's Fraud and internal investigations Practice Group and a member of both the Litigation and Bankruptcy and Financial restructuring Practice Groups. 3:15-4:15 pm often compared to mr. wolf from Pulp Fiction, neal is most notably summoned when the case "stinks." known fondly as "The Fraud Guy," he contends with a litany of fraudsters and fraudulent transactions, including those stemming from bankruptcy fraud, occupational fraud, corporate governance fraud, government corruption, insurance fraud, bank fraud, mortgage fraud, asset concealment, so-called asset protection plans, offshore financial centers and, of course, Ponzi schemes. his practice is international in scope and he has appeared in dozens of different tribunals over the course of his nearly 23 years in the business. neal and his team also focus on the psychology of fraudsters as a means of leveraging their success.
