Over the long winter, attorney and staff have enthusiastically supported numerous organizations, and activities that promote diversity and service in the legal profession, as well as the community at large. As this edition of Mosaics illustrates, the legal profession and organizations recognize not only the value of cultivating a diverse workforce, but also the many forms diversity can take. Some of the highlights of this issue of Mosaics include the Firm s signature cultural heritage celebrations honoring Native American Indian, Asian Pacific American and Jewish American Heritage Months, and African American History Month. Events included discussions and trainings sessions with prominent experts. The Firm also supported a host of charities and assisted the community with several fundraising initiatives. We hope you enjoy this issue. As always, we are proud of our efforts and look forward to working with all of you on continued initiatives and events. Kramer Levin s Alumni Network Kramer Levin alumni gather in the atrium Christopher Auguste Partner, Corporate Department On May 15, 2014, Kramer Levin hosted an Alumni Event, organized by the Firm s Women s Initiative Committee as part of its ongoing commitment to create opportunities and connections for women and men inside and outside the Firm. Among many other impressive positions, Kramer Levin s alumni have served as government officials, judges, prosecutors, general counsel, professors, bankers, journalists and public servants. 2 2 Diversity & Community Service Mosaics In and Around community City Harvest Skip Lunch Fight Hunger. This May, in support of the Skip Lunch Fight Hunger Campaign, the Firm collected monetary donations to help families in need of emergency food by donating to NYC food pantries. Coalition for the Homeless Throughout the year, the Firm provides legal and philanthropic support to the Coalition. Upcoming community service events include: Camp Homeward Bound Camp Gear for Kids. The Firm organized a collection campaign for camp supplies for summer campers/children. Donated items included backpacks, flash lights and towels, as well as monetary donations. Project Back to School Drive. Kramer Levin will collect school supplies and monetary donations from employees this summer. First Step Coalition for the Homeless. Throughout the year, the Firm hosts a 14-week job training program for a First Step intern. The internship empowers one former homeless and low-income woman to achieve employment and educational goals. Kramer Levin has had a meaningful, engaging and long-lasting relationship with First Step for more than 10 years. Youth Bridge NY. Youth Bridge is a non-profit leadership program that assists high school students in meeting the challenges of an extremely diverse NYC. It is a two-year program for students in 11th & 12th grade. The organization is devoted to improving respect and diversity in NYC schools and community. Kramer Levin hosts an intern each summer, as well as a career development day for the student participants. NAMI-NYC Metro. Kramer Levin continues to provide legal and philanthropic support to NAMI-NYC Metro, the New York City-based grassroots affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which provides support, education and advocacy for mentally ill persons and their families. In addition to assisting NAMI with pro bono legal services, most significantly to help launch an anti-stigma campaign called I will listen, the Firm, led by General Counsel Charlotte Moses Fischman (also President Emeritus of NAMI-NYC Metro), supported a Kramer Levin team of walkers who participated in the annual NAMIWALK on May 10, 2014 across the Brooklyn Bridge. The team raised over $15,000, the third highest of any of the participating teams from hospitals, mental health providers, unions and businesses. n

4 4 Diversity & Community Service Mosaics Diversity & Women s initiatives Affinity Group Initiatives The Affinity Group for Attorneys of Color hosted a scotch tasting for members on January 24, Kramer Levin s Affinity Group for Attorneys of Color hosted a Chinese/Lunar New Year lunch on February 4 th with special guest Chef Connie Sun. Ms. Sun conducted a dumpling making demonstration and also discussed the tradition, history and varieties of dumplings. On June 4 th, Kramer Levin s Affinity Group for Attorneys of Color invited 1L students to an evening with the Firm s attorneys at Yankee Stadium. In addition to watching the Yankees play the Oakland A s, our attorneys provided tips regarding the recruiting process and shared insights on life at the Firm. The Working Parents Affinity Group hosted Dana Rosenbloom on April 14 th to address parenting strategies for children ages During the discussion, titled Keeping Your Cool When Your Kids Are Not, Ms. Rosenbloom provided parents with strategies for managing challenging behavior, reinforcing positive behavior and encouraging cooperation. Ms. Rosenbloom has a master s degree in Infant and Parent Development and Early Intervention and has been working with children and families for over 10 years. Women's Initiative The Women s Initiative Committee sponsored a discussion with author Lynn Povich on November 18, Ms. Povich discussed her book, The Good Girls Revolt, which details the landmark EEOC complaint against Newsweek magazine filed in Ms. Povich is an award-winning journalist who has spent more than 40 years in the news business. She worked at Newsweek for 25 years and was one of 46 women who sued the magazine for sex discrimination, the first women in the media to do so. She has received numerous honors, including a 1976 Matrix Award from Women in Communications for Exceptional Achievement in Magazines, and the 2006 Exceptional Woman in Publishing Award from Women in Periodical Publishing. On December 9 th, the Women s Initiative Committee sponsored a discussion by Wells Fargo on Wealth Management for Women. On June 2, 2014, the Women s Initiative Committee sponsored a discussion by the OpEd Project, whose mission is to raise the voice, profile and leadership potential of women experts in all fields. The program is designed to share the tools of powerful argument, and also to inspire and cultivate a sense of thought leadership by encouraging participants to see their potential impact on the world. This lunch presentation addressed how to establish authority; how to build consensus; and how to make a powerful, evidence-based argument for an idea or cause you care about.

5 Diversity & Community Service Mosaics 5 Kramer Levin s Affinity Groups play a key role in recruiting, workplace inclusion, business development, peer networking and community involvement. Kramer Levin has three affinity groups: Attorneys of Color; LGBT Attorneys and Working Parents. initiatives cont'd The Women s Initiative of Kramer Levin also continued its business lunch program for women attorneys of the Firm. This program schedules small group lunches with successful women in the legal and business community and provides participants an opportunity to expand their network and discuss issues of importance to women. On December 16, 2013, Barbara Kolsun hosted a lunch. Ms. Kolsun is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Stuart Weitzman, LLC, a luxury shoe design, manufacturing and retail company based in New York. She started the company s first in-house legal department and manages all legal matters for the company, including intellectual property. On March 4, 2014, Sarah Leah Whitson, Director of Human Rights Watch's Middle East and North Africa Division, hosted a lunch. Ms. Whitson has led landmark investigations of human rights conditions in Libya and Saudi Arabia and numerous advocacy missions in the region, and overseen more than 20 research missions and edited the resulting reports. On March 18 th, the women attorneys enjoyed a lunch with Kristy Rogan Meringolo, Director of Litigation at Avon Products, Inc. Prior to her role as Director of Litigation, Ms. Meringolo served as Avon s Compliance Counsel, where she was responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of the company s Global Anti-Corruption Program. On April 11 th, the women attorneys enjoyed a lunch with Heidi Garfield, Corporate Counsel at Shutterstock, Inc. Ms. Garfield oversees intellectual property matters such as IP rights and license enforcement, trademark prosecution, litigation and domain name issues. Diversity Committee Initiatives In honor of National American Indian Heritage Month, Kramer Levin hosted Dr. Ellen J. Staurowsky on November 11, 2013 to discuss American Indian imagery in sports. Dr. Staurowsky is a professor in the Department of Sport Management at Drexel University. She is internationally recognized as an expert on social justice issues in sports, which include gender equity and Title IX, pay equity and equal employment opportunity, the exploitation of athletes, the faculty role in reforming college sports, representation of women in sports media, and the misappropriation of American Indian imagery in sports. On February 10, 2014, Kramer Levin hosted Columbia Law School Professor Theodore Shaw in honor of African American History Month. Professor Shaw s discussion was titled African Americans and a Tale of Two Nations: Brown at Sixty and the Demise of the Voting Rights Act. Professor Shaw was an attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund for 23 years and has been Of Counsel to Fulbright, Norton Rose (formerly Fulbright & Jaworski) since In honor of Jewish American Heritage Month, Kramer Levin hosted Columbia Professor Rebecca Kobrin for a discussion titled Jewish Lawyers, the Immigration Commission and America's First Immigration Crisis, Professor Kobrin's received her B.A. from Yale (1994), and her M.Phil. (1995) and Ph.D. (2002) from the University of Pennsylvania. Kramer Levin hosted a discussion titled, Religious Diversity in the Workplace Fostering Inclusivity and Engagement on April 8 th. This program was conducted by Mark E. Fowler, Managing Director of Programs at the Tanenbaum Center > continued on page 7

6 6 Diversity & Community Service Mosaics in the news Kramer Levin Awards Scholarships to Legal Outreach Graduates Kramer Levin continued its annual tradition of awarding college scholarships in memory of Marvin Frankel to nine deserving graduates of Legal Outreach, Inc., a non-profit organization that prepares urban youth from underserved communities in New York City to compete at high academic levels by using intensive legal and educational programs as tools for fostering vision, developing skills, enhancing confidence, and facilitating the pursuit of higher education. The scholarships were presented during Legal Outreach s Senior Honors Night on May 29, 2014 at the organization s headquarters in Long Island City. Litigation associate and Legal Outreach Advisory Board member Jeremy Cohen presented the scholarships to Shanelle Davis (Harvard University), Dalon Douglas (Hunter College), Alyssia King (Buffalo State), Maggie Li (Baruch College), Kaiyah Ogunlana (Johnson & Wales), Timothy Pamias (NYU), Olivia Skowronski (Skidmore), Wilson Vivas (Ithaca College), and former Kramer Levin intern Sicheng Weng (Lafayette College). Also recognized during the evening for successful completion of the rigorous Legal Outreach program were former Kramer Levin interns Keyon Ford (Queensborough), Fabiola Moise (John Jay), Kiara Nunez (York College), Kevin Solomon (York College), and Alisha Sukhra (Hartwick). Legal Outreach thanks Kramer Levin for its continued support of the program and its students. Kramer Levin's Jeffrey Trachtman Receives NYC Bar Association Award for Service to LGBT Community Kramer Levin partner Jeffrey S. Trachtman was presented with the Arthur S. Leonard Award for distinguished service on behalf of the LGBT Community at the City Bar Association s annual reception celebrating LGBT Pride Month on June 24, The Award, named for the distinguished law professor and scholar of LGBT rights, is given annually to two members of the bar selected by the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights scholarship recipients from the Legal Outreach graduation with Jeremy Cohen Jeff, a Partner in the Litigation Department who specializes in bankruptcy and mass tort cases, served for 17 years as Chair of Kramer Levin s Pro Bono Committee and has maintained an active pro bono practice since joining the Firm in The City Bar award recognizes his work in the area of LGBT rights dating back nearly 20 years. Most notably, Trachtman served as lead co-counsel with Lambda Legal Defense in Hernandez v. Robles, the historic 2006 case seeking equal marriage rights under the New York constitution. The case resulted in one of the first decisions upholding marriage equality, and while that decision did not survive appeal, the public education impact of the case encouraged the New York State Assembly to pass a marriage equality bill within a year, an important step towards full passage in In related work, Trachtman led a Kramer Levin team that co-counseled with Lambda Legal in a series of cases establishing recognition under New York law for the valid out-of-state marriages of same-sex couples precedent

7 Diversity & Community Service Mosaics 7 in the news cont'd that established standing as a surviving spouse for Edie Windsor, plaintiff in the case striking down a key portion of the Defense of Marriage Act last year. Trachtman also led Kramer Levin teams that submitted important amicus briefs in a series of historic Supreme Court cases, including Dale v. Boy Scouts of America, Lawrence v. Texas, Windsor v. United States, and Perry v. Hollingsworth. Kramer Levin has submitted an updated version of the Perry and Windsor briefs addressing the growing support for marriage equality among mainstream religions in several of the marriage cases now pending in federal appellate courts across the country. Earlier, Trachtman represented the lesbian survivor of a 9/11 victim in establishing her right to share in her partner s Victims Compensation Fund award. Trachtman also serves as point person for Kramer Levin s pro bono general counsel relationships with the LGBT Community Center and Freedom to Marry. n initiatives cont'd from page 5 for Interreligious Understanding. The goal of this program was to raise awareness on religious differences and the ways in which those differences often impact employee relationships and teamwork. On May 6 th, Kramer Levin s Diversity Committee and the Professional Development Department co-sponsored a discussion on Sponsorship, led by Ellen Ostrow, Ph.D., the owner of Lawyers Life Coach LLC, a firm providing professional development, career and executive coaching to attorneys. On May 12 th, the Firm hosted Magistrate Judge Marilyn D. Go in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Judge Go is a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York. At the time of her appointment in 1993, she was a partner in the New York law firm of Baden KramerHuffman Brodsky & Go, P.C. Judge Go earned her B.A. degree from Radcliffe College in 1973 and her J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in On June 9 th, in honor of LGBT Pride Month, Kramer Levin hosted a panel discussion including several of the Firm s pro bono clients/partners to discuss their work and what s next in LGBT rights. Participants included Norman C. Simon, chair of the Empire State Pride Agenda, who spoke about the organization s top legislative priorities for LGBT New Yorkers and their families; Kramer Levin alumnus Lee Strock, who discussed his work on behalf of homeless LGBTQ youth at the Peter Cicchino Youth Project of the Urban Justice Center; Joshua Block of the ACLU, who provided an update on marriage equality; Noah Lewis of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF), who discussed TLDEF s work towards ending discrimination based upon gender identity and expression; and Daniel Alicea of Immigration Equality, who discussed asylum claims for LGBT and HIV+ clients and issues affecting those groups in other countries. On June 10 th, Kramer Levin s Diversity Committee invited all Summer Associates to a lunch at Iroha Japanese Restaurant. During this cultural lunch, Trevor Corson, also known as the Sushi Concierge, conducted a discussion on the background/ origins of the traditions behind Japanese cuisine, the reason behind combining certain ingredients, and the methodology of preparing them. n

8 8 Diversity & Community Service Mosaics Outside Support to cultural groups The Firm sponsored the New York State Bar Association s (NYSBA) 11th Annual Celebrating Diversity in the Bar reception, held on Monday, January 27, This year s reception honored Darryl W. Gibbs, Vice President and Senior Counsel of AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company, as the 2014 Trailblazer Award winner. On February 26 th, the Firm was a sponsor for the Asian American Bar Association of New York s (AABANY) 2014 Annual Dinner. This event honored Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Senior Managing Director, Lazard Freres & Co. LLC; Randal S. Milch, Executive Vice President, Public Policy & General Counsel, Verizon Communications Inc.; and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF). Kramer Levin was a sponsor for Harlem RBI's 6th Annual Women's Event which was held on March 13 th. This event unites more than 300 attendees to celebrate the success of the women and girls of Harlem RBI. The Firm sponsored NYSBA s Smooth Moves 2014 held on April 1 st. Smooth Moves is the premier diversity program of the New York State Bar Association. Kramer Levin was a sponsor for the DirectWomen Institute Class of This group is designed to identify, develop, and support a select group of accomplished women attorneys to provide qualified directors needed by the boards of U.S. companies, while promoting the independence and diversity required for good corporate governance.
