3 Speakers: Keynote Speaker: Norm Miller Norm Miller holds the position of V.P. of Analytics for the CoStar Group, a public commercial real estate data and market analysis company headquartered in Washington DC. Norm left the University of San Diego in 2009 where he was the Academic Director at the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate but retains the position of Distinguished Research Professor and Editor of the Journal of Sustainable Real Estate. Previously he was at the University of Cincinnati where he was Academic Director and the founder of the real estate program. He received his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. Dr. Miller has numerous academic articles, books and articles in trade market publications on housing, brokerage, mortgage risk, valuation, sustainable real estate and many other topics. His most recent book Commercial Real Estate Analysis and Investment with Geltner, Eicholtz and Clayton is in its second edition and is the leading graduate level textbook on a global basis. Dr. Miller has lectured globally and domestically from Singapore and Thailand to Russia. He has worked extensively with various trade associations and became one of the first Distinguished Fellows of NAIOP in 2002 as served as one of the primary instructors for NAIOP educational programs from 1998 through He is currently a Homer Hoyt Land Use Institute Faculty and Board member, based in North Palm Beach Florida and the Editor of a new journal on sustainable real estate which he founded in 2009 (see and on the research committees of PREA, the ULI and ICSC. BANKING OUTLOOK: James Follis is a Vice President and Senior Asset Manager within the Commercial ORE Group for Wells Fargo. James currently managers a team of Asset Managers and Construction Managers whose responsibilities consist of operating and disposing of commercial bank owned Real Estate throughout the U.S. Previous to his experience at Wells Fargo, James was involved with the management of many of the master planned residential land development projects for Lennar, located throughout the Southern California markets of the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley. Prior to his tenure at Lennar, James worked for Kenneth Leventhal/Ernst & Young and KPMG, his responsibilities consisted of advising Fortune 500 and large privately held companies as it related to their real estate holdings. John P. Wickenhiser is a Senior Vice President and Manager in Wells Fargo s Real Estate Banking Group. In his role as Manager, John leads a team in San Diego that manages the bank s relationship with Real Estate Developers, Investors, Fund Managers, and REITs, a significant portion of which is construction related. He has 18 years of lending experience and has been with Wells Fargo since John serves on the Board of Directors for the Downtown San Diego Partnership and the Commercial Real Estate Committee at the Burnham- Moores Center for Real Estate at the University of San Diego. He also serves as Treasurer and
4 Board Member for Canyon Springs Church. John is a graduate of San Diego State University (BS: Business Administration) and the University of Southern California (MBA: Finance). Scott Ripperton has been in the commercial banking industry in San Diego since 1985 and is presently Area Manager for Wells Fargo Business Banking in San Diego. He has been with Wells Fargo since 2002, having been with several different banks prior including San Diego Trust & Savings Bank and Scripps Bank. A graduate of the University of Iowa, he also completed Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington. He is active in the community, serving on the local boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego and the San Diego Chapter of the Risk Management Association. Tony Yousif serves as a Vice President for Sperry Van Ness. He is responsible for all aspects of pre-marketing, due diligence, financial underwriting, and offering materials in the sale of commercial properties. He is currently working with financial institutions; Wells Fargo, City National Bank, US Bank, BBVA; as a consultant, providing guidance and ways to restructure or dispose of distressed commercial real estate. He is a member of several professional and community-based organizations, including Herb Klein Leadership, the Urban Land Institute (Young Leaders Group co-chair), the board of directors for the California Receivers Forum, board of directors for the Risk Management Association, and board member as community chair for the Rotary Club of La Jolla. Yousif earned a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from San Diego State University. INSURANCE & BONDING: Derick Hembd is the Client Advocate, Real Estate Practice, San Diego. Derick leads Willis San Diego s Distressed Assets Practice. In support of his clients, he enlists and coordinates the required subject matter experts from across Willis National Real Estate practice. His expertise includes structuring insurance programs that respond to a range of risk management and insurance issues related to distressed assets. Major areas of focus include Property, Liability and Environmental insurance; Forced Placed coverage; insurance for Real Estate Owned assets; Professional Liability insurance and Construction insurance for incomplete projects. Prior to joining Willis Real Estate & Hospitality Practice, Derick was a successful business owner, educator, college baseball player and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Derick is very active member with various professional organizations, including: San Diego Receivers, NAIOP-San Diego Chapter, and Urban Land Institute-San Diego/Tijuana. His community involvement includes serving as a leader with the Navigator s military ministry- Marine Corps. Brian Ruane is the Executive Vice President, National Practice Leader, Distressed Assets. Brian Ruane CPCU is an Executive Vice President of The Willis Group and the founder of both its Real Estate and Hotel Practice and its Distressed Assets Practice. Since its founding in 2005, The Real Estate and Hotel Practice has grown to be the 2nd largest Industry Practice at Willis.
5 Prior to assuming his current responsibilities, Brian, a 25 year veteran of Willis, served in a variety of Executive Positions including Sales Management, Marketing Management and Managed the New Jersey Profit Center. Prior to joining Willis in 1985 he was an Underwriting Executive at Travelers Insurance Company. Brian has a BS in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from NYU. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Risk Management at St John's University, and has written and lectured extensively on Insurance and Risk Management issues related to real estate, hotel and casino accounts. Brian was awarded the Power Broker Designation in both 2006 and 2009 by Risk and Insurance Magazine. Brent Flory is the Vice President of Business Development for Loan Protector Insurance Services, a Willis North America Company. Brent has been with Loan Protector and Willis for 18 years. He is focused on creating custom, outsourced insurance programs for mortgage servicers and investors, including both commercial and residential portfolios. Brent signed Loan Protector s first outsource insurance tracking client in the 1990 s and was instrumental in the program design and evolution. He also was responsible for developing proprietary systems integrations for the major mortgage servicing systems. Brent has extensive experience consulting clients in the REO, non-performing, and subprime space. Previously, Brent worked as a commercial underwriter for The Great American Insurance Group, focused on underwriting financial institutions. He graduated with degrees in Finance and Management Information Systems from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Kelley George is the Assistant Vice President, Environmental Practice, Western Region. Kelley is an environmental consultant with more than 18 years experience in the environmental and insurance industries. As an environmental consultant she consulted on large projects for the military, state and local governments, and industry clients. In addition to her consulting role, Kelley has successfully underwritten and placed hundreds of millions of dollars in environmental insurance products. Prior to joining Willis Environmental Practice, she worked as the Western Region Business Development Manager for AIG Environmental, where she was responsible for marketing and underwriting large finite risk transfer products. Previously, she was a National Accounts Underwriter for AIG Environmental in San Francisco. Before joining AIG, Kelley worked for Aon Risk Services and an insurance broker specializing in Mergers and Acquisitions. Kelley has a strong background in the legislative and regulatory processes. In addition to these skills her brokering and underwriting backgrounds give her the tools needed to negotiate favorable environmental policy term for her clients. Rachel Holbrook is the Senior Civil Bond Underwriter Bond Services. She entered the surety bond industry in Ms. Holbrook s primary focus is underwriting for civil litigations matters. Additionally, she implemented Bond Services expansion into the state of Texas. Currently oversees the marketing and business operations of the Fort Worth and San Diego offices along with underwriting duties. Ms. Holbrook also presents bond workshops for law firms and professional associations.
6 FRAUD PROTECTION DURING RECEIVERSHIP: Dana Basney is a Shareholder in the Certified Public Accounting Firm of Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C., and is a Managing Director of CBIZ MHM, LLC in San Diego. He is the Managing Director in charge of the San Diego office s Forensic Accounting Services Group, which performs due diligence, business valuation, litigation support, investigative accounting, and insolvency services. He has practiced public accounting since 1973 and received his CPA certificate in January of He has extensive experience in the tax, audit and consulting areas servicing a large number of clients in virtually every field of enterprise. He has represented numerous taxpayers before federal, state and local taxing authorities in cases involving complex legal and valuation issues. Mr. Basney has also been appointed by the courts as special master, conservator, and joint expert in matters of valuation and accounting. He has served as mediator and settlement referee in a number of cases involving accounting, valuation and financial issues. Mr. Basney has acted as accountant for trustees, debtors and creditors in numerous bankruptcy cases and has assisted in reorganizing both public and closely held businesses.
