2013 Report to Members LEAD The task for this generation of leaders in the law is not only to find the strongest talent in the next generation, but to develop that talent to lead the profession.

Dear LCLD Members: It is my privilege to begin serving as Chair of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. I am mindful of the work done by my predecessor, Immediate Past Chair Wally Martinez of Hunton & Williams, and of course, by LCLD Founding Chair Emeritus Rick Palmore. I also look forward to working with Laura Stein in her capacity as Chair-Elect. This has been a year when you the Members of LCLD have labored hard on what we ve referred to as the Talent to Leaders Trajectory...identifying strong, diverse talent and creating leadership opportunities for that talent. In addition to the increasing number of young attorneys and law students of diverse backgrounds whose careers were impacted by LCLD in 2013, I am pleased to note that we are developing metrics to gauge that impact, with the assistance of researchers at the American Bar Foundation. We also began in 2013 an invaluable dialogue with the nation s leading law school deans at a roundtable hosted in June by the University of Colorado School of Law. We extend a special thanks to Dean Philip J. Weiser for hosting the event was a tremendous year of growth. I thank our Members for their support, and I look forward with great anticipation to the year ahead. Sincerely, Brad Smith Executive Vice President, General Counsel Microsoft 1
LEADERSHIP From its first days in 2009, the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) has been single-minded in pursuit of its strategic mission: the development of diverse talent for the highest positions of leadership in the legal profession. LCLD has convened General Counsel and Managing Partners for four Annual Membership Meetings for valuable peer-topeer discussion about best practices, research into diversityrelated issues, and new initiatives. The 2012 Annual LCLD Membership Meeting, as an example, enlisted UCLA Law Professor Jerry Kang for a dialogue on the quiet and stubborn effect of implicit bias on the building of teams in law firms a dialogue that continued at the LCLD mid-year CLE seminar and webinar, which was attended in person or has been viewed remotely by approximately 500 people since May A video of the dialogue remains available to LCLD Members through May LCLD s strategic initiatives grow out of a commitment from the leadership of the profession to take specific, focused, and measurable actions. That commitment is evidenced by the growth in membership of LCLD. In 2012 alone, LCLD enrolled 28 new corporate and law firm members. Additionally, 87% of Members participated in at least one program over the past year. The level of involvement across all of our membership is evidence that Members are action-oriented and willing to roll up their sleeves to fulfill the mission of LCLD. One of the most encouraging notes sounded this past year is the depth of engagement of LCLD s Members. In 2013, we began keeping track of the number of LCLD activities that each Member organization supported. The following Member corporations and law firms had extraordinarily high scores: 2013 Most Active Member Corporations 2013 Most Active Member Law Firms 2

ACTION 1 As LCLD enters a new year, the focus on a Talent to Leaders trajectory has seen remarkable success in the numbers of promising law students and young, highpotential partners whose careers are being transformed by the strategic initiatives that LCLD has launched, refined, and expanded. It is the very character of the LCLD membership the General Counsel and Managing Partners of America s leading corporations and law firms that allows LCLD to move boldly and rapidly and begin to change the very face of the legal profession in America. 2 In 2013, LCLD has maintained a tight strategic discipline. Its leaders and Members have worked hard to identify those particular junctures where LCLD can have perhaps uniquely the greatest impact. The organization is determining those points in the legal pipeline where talented individuals do or do not enter into law school, do or do not thrive in law school, and do or do not find their way to their first day as a practicing attorney. Beyond the issues of pipeline, LCLD is equipping diverse young partners to grapple with the generations-old realities, assumptions, and attitudes that can mean an open door to one individual and a closed door to another who is equally qualified. Progress will be seen in the growing number of General Counsel and Managing Partners who are women, people of color, LGBT, and attorneys with disabilities. Many of these leaders of the next generation will look back on the strategic initiatives of LCLD as Pictured Above: 1. 7 LCLD MENTORING GROWTH the tectonic shifts that helped move them to places of opportunity. There is fundamental change afoot, and it can be detected by the dramatic numbers of individuals whose lives are being touched by LCLD s programs: The LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program has engaged 183 Member organizations more than threefourths of all Member organizations for a total of 1418 Mentors. More than 750 mentoring pairs met in 30 cities in the academic year alone. The 1L LCLD Scholars Program gives first-year law students from diverse backgrounds summer work experience in law firms and corporate legal departments. The number of participating Member organizations has grown from 36 in 2011 to 84 in 2013, hosting more than 350 Scholars in just three years. The 1L LCLD Scholars Program has also added a mentoring partnership with the LCLD Fellows Program and a learning series of webinars to enhance the summer retreat experience. LCLD s Fellows and Fellows Alumni Programs are giving more than 400 high-potential attorneys invaluable professional development seminars, workshops, and networking opportunities. The LCLD Fellows Program also features extraordinary exposure to leaders in the profession through LCLD s Leadership Lunches and Learning Experiences at Member organizations. The current class of Fellows numbers 168, respresenting 45 Member corporations and 98 Member law firms. 25 CITIES ACADEMIC YEAR 56 SCHOLARS 2836 MENTORS MENTEES 131 SCHOLARS 105 MEMBERS PARTICIPATING 1L LCLD SCHOLARS GROWTH 84 MEMBERS PARTICIPATING 30 CITIES ACADEMIC YEAR 171 SCHOLARS Pictured Below: 3 (opposite page) and 4. 1L LCLD Scholars attending the L LCLD Scholars Retreat in Denver, CO (June 2013) LCLD FELLOWS GROWTH 139 MEMBERS PARTICIPATING 168 FELLOWS Photo 118 FELLOWS 137 FELLOWS
RESULTS SALT and CLEO Partnerships LCLD worked in 2013 with both the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) and the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) to help those organizations encourage undergraduates to consider law school. LCLD s partnership with CLEO reached 480 diverse law school hopefuls with programming on LSATs, law school admissions, and financial aid, and provided time with, and exposure to, diverse lawyers in six cities. SALT focused its initatives on equipping pre-law advisors with the tools and information they need to help diverse students navigate the admission process. Through day-long programs in Miami and Washington, DC, our collaboration with SALT has reached more than 200 program attendees. LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program LCLD Mentors have dedicated an estimated 6800 hours to students at 126 law schools that s more than nine months worth of round-the-clock mentoring! LCLD Mentors and Mentees developed strong relationships based on frequent interactions, some meeting more than 15 times in a single year. More than 75% of Mentees agree that participating in the LCLD Success in Law School Mentoring Program has helped them in law school this academic year and 71% agree that it will help them in planning their future legal career. More than 80% of Mentors and Mentees agree that they enjoyed the relationship they had forged through the program. And while the program only requires a one-year commitment, 80% of participants will continue the relationship into a second year. Roundtable Discussion on Diversity in the Nation s Law Schools 1L LCLD Scholars Program In June, LCLD convened the first roundtable of law school Deans, General Counsel, and Managing Partners at the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder. The group reviewed the results of a study commissioned by LCLD Member Microsoft Corporation, which compared the diversity and inclusion initiatives of law schools, medical schools, and business schools the first research of its kind on the topic and collaborated on strategies and best practices for increasing diversity in the nation s law schools. Our first class of 1L LCLD Scholars, hosted in the summer of 2011, has experienced great success, with 96% securing summer employment during their 2L summer, and 70% having already secured post-graduate employment. Most notably, of those 70%, 94% will be employed in a position with a law firm or in-house legal department. Our 2012 class of Scholars did equally well 96% of them were employed in a legal position during their 2L summer, with 91% of those placements being with law firms or in-house legal departments. 9 have maintained important professional relationships with colleagues they met through their Scholars experience and almost 90% feel confident that the experience will help them in planning their future legal career. 2 LCLD Fellows Program In March 2013, a committee of LCLD Fellows developed and distributed the first survey designed to measure the business and relationship outcomes of the LCLD Fellows Program. Fellows reported that their participation in the program has allowed them to add value to their organization, including increased contributions to the organization s operational or commercial growth. Additionally, one-third of the Fellows survey respondents have initiated or referred work to other Fellows. 3 The growing ranks of Fellows Alumni have continued in 2013 to develop an organized structure for sustained involvement. This includes the formalization of several strategic committees that are collectively led by an executive council of nominated and appointed leaders. The Fellows Alumni organized their second annual Fellows Alumni Retreat in May 2013 in San Francisco, which featured California Congresswoman Jackie Speier, former Giants owner and attorney Bill Neukom, and John Chen, former Chair and CEO of the software leader Sybase. The retreat agenda also specifically included time for peer-to-peer networking. More than 80 Fellows Alumni from both the classes of 2011 and 2012 were in attendance.
