Legal Outreach is a college-prep and pipeline to diversity organization that prepares urban youth in NYC for college matriculation through the implementation of legal and educational programs that foster vision, enhance academic skills, increase self-confidence, and instill universally accepted values critical to success at every level. The Road To College and Beyond Students begin their journey with Legal Outreach as rising 9th graders in our Summer Law Institute (SLI), currently taking place at 6 NYC law schools and serving 144 students. A five-week, law based summer program, the SLI provides exposure to professionals and professional environments and opportunities to engage in mock professional activities, i.e. a criminal justice law class and a mocktrial competition. Through the SLI, students begin to formulate a vision for the future that inspires them to develop their academic skills and adopt new regiments that will allow them to pursue their newfound goals. Once the SLI is completed, students are invited to apply to Legal Outreach s College Bound Program, a four-year, comprehensive academic enrichment and support program. College Bound (CB) currently admits 70 students per year and provides participants with a structured community of support from their ninth through twelve grade years. College Bound includes these programs: ACADEMIC ADVISORIES CB students participate in bi-weekly afterschool workshops that focus on planning for the future and developing skills critical to success in high school, college and life. (Sophomore through junior year) CONSTITUTIONAL LAW DEBATES CB students participate in bi-monthly debates, modeled after law school moot court competitions, to enhance their reasoning, critical thinking, public speaking and advocacy skills. (Sophomore through senior year) MENTORING PROGRAM CB students are assigned individual mentors from the legal profession who provide one-on-one support and assistance to their mentees. (Sophomore through senior Year) SAT PREPARATION CB students participate in a summer intensive SAT prep course through a partnership with Princeton Review. (5 weeks) COLLEGE-LEVEL PHILOSOPHY COURSE CB students take a summer college philosophy class to gain exposure to college level coursework. (5 weeks) COLLEGE SELECTION AND APPLICATION WORKSHOPS CB students receive individualized assistance in selecting colleges, writing personal essays, and completing college admissions and financial aid applications. (5 weeks and 1st semester of senior year) TRANSITION TO COLLEGE WORKSHOPS CB students participate in a series of workshops that offer insight into the myriad academic, social, and emotional issues they are likely to encounter in college. (2nd semester senior year) AFTER SCHOOL STUDY & TUTORIAL CENTER CB students with averages below an 85 are required to attend the center between the hours of 4PM and 6:30PM, Monday through Thursday, to improve their academic performance. (4 years) STUDY & LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS CB students participate in afterschool workshops on a weekly basis to sharpen their academic and life skills and enhance their preparation for high school. (Freshman year) SATURDAY WRITING ACADEMY CB students attend intensive writing classes on Saturdays to master the elements of grammar, essay writing, persuasive writing and college level research and writing. (4 years) SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM CB students engage in simulated professional activities as summer interns at corporate law firms, governmental agencies, public interest organizations, financial institutions, real estate firms, and state and federal courts. 8 A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Colleagues and Supporters: On the occasion of our 35th Anniversary, all I can say is Who Knew? Transforming lives. Strengthening communities. We re proud to recognize our friend and colleague Doug Tabish for backing the students of this city and helping them achieve their dreams of higher education. Congratulations to Legal Outreach for 35 years of outstanding community service. Who knew when I started Legal Outreach in 1983 upon graduating from law school that it would become not just my job but my passion, and that it would still be in existence 35 years later. Who knew that as Legal Outreach sought to provide middle school students with a vision for the future through Summer Law Programs, that the professional experience would lead them to invest more of their time and energy into their educations and less time on the basketball courts, the dance floors and their computers. Who knew that these students, based upon one summer s experience, would be willing to devote themselves to educational, skill-building and support programs for four years and invest over 2,300 hours over and beyond the work required at their high schools in preparation for a better future. Who knew that numerous and myriad professionals who see themselves as public servants would join me on this mission as full time and part-time staffers and as volunteers serving as guest speakers, mentors, mock-trial coaches, debate judges, internship providers, and board members. Who knew that the fruit of our combined efforts would create a pathway for 731 urban youth to gain admission to competitive colleges across the nation and graduate at rates far surpassing the national average. Who knew? Perhaps no one. But now we know! As we embark upon the next 35 years, we know that we can make a difference in the lives of students who only want one thing an opportunity to succeed! Let s continue the good work that we ve begun let s continue to change lives. Sincerely, James B. O Neal Co-Founder and Executive Director 14 15

We couldn t be more thrilled and honored to share this moment with you. Were it not for each of you - your commitment, your dedication, and your shared vision - this moment, our 35th anniversary, would not have been possible. Kramer Levin is pleased to support Legal Outreach and we congratulate honorees Jennifer Daniels Douglas Tabish Fordham Law School Thirty-five years of providing educational opportunities to children in underserved communities is an accomplishment few organizations will realize. Legal Outreach has been fortunate to reach this milestone with supporters and friends like you as our partners. Our partnership is symbolic of a community of visionaries whose purpose is to provide the world with a story of what s possible when you care enough to change the course of a child s life. Your gifts of time, mentorships, internships and donations have provided the foundation upon which more than 700 children have proudly stood as they ve prepared to share their contributions with the world and achieve their unique versions of the American dream. As the chairs of the Board of Directors and the Advisory Board, our joint service to Legal Outreach exceeds a combined 30 years. Each has been fulfilling and inspirational. Being able to serve in any capacity that helps to elevate children and their dreams is an honor we humbly embrace. We invite you to join us, in not only celebrating our shared accomplishments and partnership with you over the past thirty-five years, but building the foundation for future accomplishments. We hope you will take this opportunity to reaffirm your personal and financial commitment to Legal Outreach on the milestone of our thirty-fifth anniversary. 12 Pipeline To Diversity Public Service Champion Fordham Law School Fordham Law School is described by its Dean, Matthew Diller, as a service oriented school where its motto in service of others is not a mere catchphrase, but rather a guiding principle. For us at Legal Outreach, it is clear that the principle holds true as demonstrated by the actions and willingness of the law school s leadership to support our early intervention pipeline-to-diversity programs. Fordham Law School began partnering with Legal Outreach in 2008, enabling 25 rising 9th graders from underserved communities in Manhattan and the Bronx to participate in Legal Outreach s Summer Law Institute. Since opening its doors, the law school has continuously provided classroom space for the five-week institute and our mock trial competition. Moreover, Fordham has also aided in our quest to expose our students to a broad array of legal careers by securing guest speakers who visit the Institute throughout the summer and by facilitating the participation of their law students who assist with our Constitutional Law Debate Program. Participating in law based programs at the law school has contributed significantly to the experience of our students, allowing them to envision themselves as future law students and professionals. This has enhanced their drive and confidence and has inspired them to strive for academic excellence during high school as well as in college and graduate school. Indeed, five of Legal Outreach s alumni have gained admission and matriculated to Fordham Law, with three having graduated and two being currently enrolled. Without a doubt, Fordham Law School is a Legal Outreach Difference Maker. The Public Service Project is proud to support Legal Outreach and joins in honoring Jennifer Daniels, Douglas Tabish and Fordham Law School New York Los Angeles Miami Washington, DC
Highlight 35 Years of Impacting Lives 24 25
35 Students, 35 Years Fostering a Vision for the Future Legal Outreach saw in me what I hadn t yet seen in myself. It taught me to dream big and awakened my passion for the law, particularly through the constitutional law debates. Diane Lopez, Immigration Attorney for NY County Defender Services LO Class of 2007 Middlebury College, Seton Hall Law School Legal Outreach made me who I am today. Before Legal Outreach, I hadn t really thought about college. While my family was always supportive of my educational pursuits, they couldn t provide direction. I didn t have a clear vision. That s the void Legal Outreach filled. Luis Vargas, Google LO Class of 2010 University of Pennsylvania 14 Legal Outreach allowed me to see a world of possibilities and provided me with the resources that enabled me to develop the skills I needed to succeed. My confidence, public speaking and writing abilities were fostered by the intensive writing and debate program and caring staff who challenged me to continuously improve. Legal Outreach convinced me that I could gain admission to the most competitive institutions and follow my passions, even though no one from my family had ever gotten past high school. Without Legal Outreach, it is safe to say that I would not be where I am today, in a position to positively impact my community through educational policy. Rawlin Rosario, Public Policy Fellow at the NYS Education Department LO Class of 2012 University of Pennsylvania 16, Masters in Educational Leadership, Politics and Advocacy, NYU LO helped me prepare for college and set me on the path to pursue a legal career. DeVoia Stewart, Fifth Year Associate at White & Case LO Class of 2002 Georgetown University 06, Rutgers School of Law LO provided me with the skills and helped me develop the work ethic I needed to be successful in college and now law school. It gave me access to all of the materials and support (both emotionally and academically) that have been critical. I have no doubt that had I not participated in LO, I wouldn t be attending CLS. I m not even sure I would have ever realized I wanted to be a lawyer. Katherine Nuñez, Summer Associate at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, Student at Columbia Law School LO Class of 2012 Williams College 16 Legal Outreach made it possible for me to dream big. I would not have made it to Hamilton were it not for LO, and most importantly I wouldn t have had the tools to succeed without my Legal Outreach education. I thank them for instilling in me a tremendous work ethic and for helping shape me into the person I am today. Carol Antunez, Field Coordinator at StudentFirstNY LO Class of 2011 Hamilton 15 Developing Skills I highly credit Legal Outreach for supplementing my public school education. While I always considered myself a good student, in hindsight I know that my public school education would not have been enough for admission into and success at a top college. As an inner city child, I was also naive about my role in the spaces I am now a part of and soon realized that my competition was never those in my school, but students around the country (and world) that had better and more resources. I thank them for opening my mind and contributing so positively to my life. Rosemary Rodriguez, Research Analyst at Dublin Research & Consulting LO Class of 2011 Hamilton College 15 LO boosted my confidence and gave me tangible skills that allowed me to excel not only in high school, but also in college and beyond. Chrishana White, Attorney for NYC DOE LO Class of 2002 Boston College, Seton Hall Law School Legal Outreach enabled me to become a competitive, success-oriented professional. I have acquired useful skills, contacts, and real-world applications for my career pursuits. Isaiah Gaines, Counselor at Double Discovery LO Class of 2008 University of Rochester 12 I always knew I would go to college and maybe even graduate school, but as a first-generation college student of immigrant parents, I had no idea how to make that happen or what it would entail. That s where Legal Outreach came in. Not only did the program prepare me to be a competitive applicant, but it also equipped me with the tools to succeed in college and beyond. Ama Darkwa, Student for Masters of Science in Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University LO Class of 2012 Brandeis University
LO singlehandedly changed my educational trajectory. It gave me the tools, credentials, and confidence to apply to and thrive in a rigorous academic environment. I applied to and was accepted to my dream school directly because of the groundwork and preparation that LO provided. Furthermore, I consistently use my knowledge from Saturday writing classes, debate competitions, and more in my career. Finally, the LO staff during my high school years were incredible. Thank you LO for all that you have done and for the communities and students you continue to support!! Diana Shifrina, Product Manager at Inside Track LO Class of 2008 Brown University 12 While at Legal Outreach, I had the opportunity to work on skills that would have been overlooked in my public high school. I improved upon my writing and debating skills and increased my SAT scores. Without LO, I wouldn t have any knowledge about the university I currently attend, and I wouldn t have gone to a private institution that s ranked as a top 10 business school! Chantel Lewis, Student at Bentley University LO Class of 2016 Providing Guidance & Support Legal Outreach opened my eyes to the opportunities that exist in higher education and beyond. Throughout the four years of high school, they supported me academically through enrichment programs like writing classes, homework/tutoring help, and SAT prep, and socially by expanding my circle of peers. I m extremely thankful to LO. Jeyla Mammadova, Policy Advisor for Deputy Mayor at the NYC Mayor s Office LO Class of 2007 Dickinson College 11 Legal Outreach provided me with a space to dream about a future that honored my parents struggle when they immigrated to America looking for more opportunities. LO also provided me the support to build a foundation for those dreams with their love and encouragement. Barbara Florvil, Masters of Divinity Student at Princeton Theological Seminary LO Class of 2009 Tufts University I would not be in college were it not for the discipline I learned and the support I received at LO. I am grateful for not just the debate and writing classes, but also for our attorney mentors and law student coaches who guided me and provided me with role models to look up to. Cristian Calixto, Student at Hamilton College LO Class of 2017 Legal Outreach prepared me for college and the admissions process. I don t think I would ever have had the opportunity to attend a top three liberal arts school without the support from Legal Outreach. Gabriela Ariana Campoverde, Senior Analyst, Strategic Planning, American Express LO Class of 2012 Swarthmore College 14 I felt wholly supported as a first generation college student who didn t have the parental resources to learn more about college. Throughout the program, I was inspired by the staff, who like me, came from modest backgrounds but had obtained graduate degrees. I was pushed to reach my fullest potential. As a college student, I feel confident in my skills and abilities, more so than I would have without Legal Outreach. Without the support of Legal Outreach I wouldn t have known that my dreams of becoming a scholar, graduate student and attorney were possible. Michaella Mentu, Student at Smith College LO Class of 2015 Legal Outreach offered me a safe haven and was a beacon of light during a crucial period when my family endured tremendous financial hardships. Through Legal Outreach s college preparatory program and no excuse mantra and with its supportive staff and culture of academic achievement, I found hope in my future, developed a sense of self-determination, and persevered with tenacious zeal. Attending a prestigious undergraduate institution that comes with significant social capital and being the first in my family to graduate from college would not have happened without LO. Legal Outreach changed the trajectory of my life and my family s circumstance. Mimi Ko, College Counselor at the Chinese American Planning Council, Inc. LO Class of 2007 Georgetown University 11, Masters in Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education Legal Outreach completely changed my life. I have gained so much academic, social, and spiritual knowledge just by being a part of this beautiful community. The relationships I formed with students, staff, and other lawyers/lo partners kept me going all through high school. I know these bonds will continue to exist and even grow while I am away in college. I will forever be grateful for all the opportunities presented to me through Legal Outreach. I would not be attending Smith College (which turned out to be the best fit for me) if it were not for Legal Outreach s exposure and guidance. Ava-Celeste Dujon, Student at Smith College LO Class of 2017 Legal Outreach set high academic standards for me in high school and also expected me to excel academically in college and beyond. LO has always been present to help its alums with their academic goals, even beyond high school. Without LO, I may not have gained exposure to the legal field or acquired the academic and professional support to pursue a legal education at a competitive level. Despite the fact that I was always a good student, it was nice to know that I had a strong support system within LO that reassured me that I could achieve any and all of my academic and professional goals. Lorena Rodriguez, Student at Columbia Law School LO Class of 2009 Amherst College
Legal Outreach taught me all the skills necessary to excel in my college career. Without the guidance I received in LO, I would never have taken applying to college seriously. In fact, I would probably not have gone to college at all. Jazmin Rodriguez, Litigation Paralegal at Ginarte Gallardo Gonzalez Winograd LLP LO Class of 2012 Canisius University 16 As an immigrant, in this country for less than a year at the time I joined Legal Outreach, I was fortunate to find guidance and support from the LO staff, as well as my peers. Without LO, I am not sure where I would be, but I do know that I would not have felt as grounded and confident as I do now. I feel fortunate to know that regardless of how many years pass, I always have a home and a family at LO. Shyenne Medina, Student at CUNY School of Law LO Class of 2010 Trinity College 14 Building a Community LO helped me tap into my potential. I acquired life skills such as perseverance and accountability that I still use throughout my daily life. I was given a chance to grow and flourish in a loving and caring environment that contributed to who I am today. Penny Telesford, MST Therapist at NY Foundling LO Class of 2010 Mercy College 14, Masters in Mental Health Counseling, Mercy College Legal Outreach served as a great resource and community for me to really focus on academics and succeed in higher education. Julia Zukina, Project Attorney at the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys LO Class of 2006 Duke University 10, Brooklyn Law School LO gave me a community of role models, friends, cheerleaders and mentors. It is where my passion for education, community and social justice began. Alyssa Baylor, Program Manager at Brooklyn Academy of Music LO Class of 2004 Trinity College 08, MA, Columbia University Enhancing Confidence Legal Outreach truly prepared me for college. As I transitioned to college, I felt more confident going to office hours and utilizing all the academic resources available to me all because of the programs I had been apart of at LO. I also felt more comfortable engaging with professors which I know will be a key to my success at Wellesley. Keisha Jean Charles, Student at Wellesley College LO Class of 2016 Legal Outreach provided me with the resources, support, and guidance to obtain a college degree that has allowed me to maximize my opportunities and excel in life. Without Legal Outreach, I would not have the confidence to pursue many of my aspirational goals centered around leadership, management, and improving the lives of others. Kwasi Nyantakyi, Administrative Fellow at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals LO Class of 2011 University of Rochester 15, MHA, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health Legal outreach gave me a safe place and provided a sense of belonging that I never had before. They gave me the confidence to challenge myself and provided access to different opportunities that never would have been available to me. Claudene Roye, Student at University of Rochester LO Class of 2017 Legal Outreach opened the doors to many opportunities and inspired us to strive for something higher. Through the programming, they certainly gave us the confidence to challenge ourselves throughout our career journey. Redwan Saleh, Incoming Associate at O Melveny & Myers LO Class of 2008 Hamilton College 2012, Fordham Law School LO gave me the resources and the tools to be an active participant in my ever changing environments. Because of the support and community, I became more confident in my intellect and in the way that I approach tasks. I credit LO with my impeccable grammar and research skills. I know it has definitely set me apart from my peers. Ronteau Copin, Office/Operations Manager at Data & Society LO Class of 2010 Mount Holyoke 14, MBA, Metropolitan College of New York Inculcating Strong Values I would not be where I am today without LO. LO teaches you about grit - what it looks like, what it feels like, and how to maintain it. LO develops resilience. The most important take away for me was the administration s insistence that I put in the effort. They truly show what right and best looks like, and expose you to environments and possibilities I would have never known to exist otherwise. Julianna Bacchus, Associate Director of Client Services at Lighthouse Global LO Class of 2005 NYU
Legal Outreach has made such a significant impact on my life, especially regarding the way I approach challenges and stay motivated. During the more difficult days at work, I remember the phrase perseverance is the touchstone of great character from the LO pledge and am then able to push through the challenges. Had I not been a part of LO, I probably would have procrastinated and delayed self-discovery. LO helped me to express myself and break out of my shell, allowing me to hold my own when engaged in critical discussions in college. Lawrenzo Lue, Case Manager for Queens Library LO Class of 2013 Macaulay Honors Queens College Legal Outreach taught me how to work collaboratively with diverse individuals. I did not realize it at the time, but reflecting on my experiences in LO, they instilled in me a desire for inclusivity, patience for understanding differences in opinions, and advocacy skills for myself and others who do not yet have a voice. William Fong, Special Education Teacher in NYC Public Schools LO Class of 2004 Colby College 08, MA in Curriculum & Teaching, Columbia University Teachers College LO drastically improved the trajectory of my life. SLI and College Bound not only taught me instrumental technical skills (including debate and persuasive writing), but also instilled in me priceless values such as assertiveness, compassion, and persistence. James Partner, Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP Legal Outreach Advisory Board Member Dani R. James has continuously provided Legal Outreach with the support and backing that makes her firm, Kramer Levin, stand out among the 38 law firms that participate in our pipeline and college prep programs. As an Advisory Board member, Dani advocates on our behalf for the continuation and expansion of the on-going partnership. Kramer began its relationship with Legal Outreach years ago by accepting four students into their summer internship program but over time, has increased that number to eight. Additionally, Kramer Levin has become one of the most dependable financial supporters of Legal Outreach because of Dani s advocacy. Just last year, Dani obtained the firm s blessing to help sponsor our newest initiative, an all-girls program known as the RISE Summer Law Institute at Cardozo Law School. By doing so, she helped ensure the program s success and continuation for years to come. The Honorable George B. Daniels United States District Court Judge SDNY Legal Outreach Internship Provider From his highly esteemed perch at the Southern District of New York, Judge Daniels has never forgotten about humble beginnings and how young people can flourish when opportunities are presented. In 2008, Legal Outreach approached Judge Daniels and inquired about the possibility of allowing one of our rising sophomores to spend a week as an intern in his court. The Judge upped the ante by not only granting our request but also enlisting the support of many of his fellow judges serving in the Southern District. For the past decade, ten students per year have spent a week in the courts and chambers of ten distinguished jurists all of whom participate because Judge Daniels was willing to ask. Hannah Glover Managing Editor, Ignites Legal Outreach Writing Instructor When Hannah Glover joined Legal Outreach s staff over 15 years ago as a part-time writing instructor, we knew that she possessed the skill sets and temperament to help our students develop and enhance their writing. What we didn t know was the extent of her commitment and dedication to our mission, our students, and their success. Hannah is one of a kind. Each year, she devotes significant time and energy to providing our students with instruction that ensures their growth as writers and allows them to gain confidence in their ability to produce college level work. For the past several years, Hannah has helped our seniors develop well thought out personal statements that highlight their own stories and showcase their growth as writers within our program. All of her students, both past and present, would unanimously agree that she has played a critical role in preparing them for success in college and beyond. Legal Outreach s Parent Council The Legal Outreach Parent Council was established over 15 years ago when several parents took note of the impact Legal Outreach s programs had upon their children and decided that they, too, wanted to do their part and make their own independent contributions. Since its inception, the Parent Council has grown and created signature fundraising and community building events that have contributed significantly to the mission of Legal Outreach. The Parent Council currently hosts an annual fundraiser, known as the International Festival, where all parents with students in the program are encouraged to contribute a dish representing their culture and current students are asked to showcase their artistic talents. Tickets are sold and money is raised for distribution to seniors who complete Legal Outreach s four-year program. The council members devote significant time each year to assuring that every Legal Outreach student understands the importance of giving back, no matter ones station in life. What s most amazing is that the children of the core members of the Parent Council have long since graduated from the program; yet these parents continue to serve even though there is no direct benefit that accrues to them. They, indeed, are setting an example for all of Legal Outreach s constituents to follow
