UPRESENTATION: The State of Internet of Things Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon Assemblymember Richard Bloom Joshua Roth, CTO, Ring The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a time when everyday items will be connected to the Internet using things like radio-frequency identification, sensors and wireless technology. The concept was once considered futuristic, but IoT has turned into modern conveniences such as smart TVs and home automation, and has enabled remote health monitoring through devices like specialized pacemakers. With these advances come questions regarding privacy and security. How are our government leaders creating policy to manage and encourage IoT? Is it something the government should be involved in? 3. 2 P District The Honorable Ian Calderon California State Assembly Majority Leader 57P th Majority Leader Ian Calderon was elected in November 2012 to represent California's 57th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Industry, La Habra Heights, La Mirada, La Puente, Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs, South El Monte, Whittier and the unincorporated communities of Avocado Heights, Bassett, East La Mirada, East Whittier, Los Nietos-West Whittier, South San Jose Hills, South Whittier, and Hacienda Heights. Prior to his election to the Assembly, Ian worked for Hurley International as the Los Angeles/Inland Empire manager of retail marketing, where he supervised market surveys and research, and promoted company events. Ian served as a field representative for the State Assembly, which allowed him to assist residents in his community with various issues. In this capacity, he was able to help constituents gain better access to resources, and help them understand how legislation would affect them. Ian s interaction with residents of the 57th Assembly District solidified his decision to run for the State Assembly as he had witnessed first-hand the need for new, unique ideas in Sacramento. Ian graduated from California State University Long Beach where he earned a degree in Political Science, providing him with knowledge of California s political landscape and an understanding of the State s most critical issues. Majority Leader Calderon currently serves as the Chair of the Select Committee on Youth and California s Future and Co-Chair of the Legislative Technology and Innovation Caucus. He is a member of the Insurance Committee, Appropriations Committee, Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee, and the Human Services Committee. In 2015, Majority Leader Ian Calderon was named Legislator of the Year by TechNet, received the Internet Champion Award from the Internet Association, and was named one of TechAmerica s 2014 California Tech Champions. He also received the 2015 President's Award from the California Association of Museums and was named as a Legislative Arts Champion by Californians for the Arts. Majority Leader Calderon resides in Whittier with his wife Elise.

3 P District The Honorable Richard Bloom California State Assembly 50P th Richard Bloom was first elected to the 50th District of the California State Assembly in 2012 where he proudly represents the communities of Agoura Hills, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Hollywood, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Topanga, West Hollywood, and West Los Angeles. Shortly after his election, Assemblymember Richard Bloom was appointed to the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Resources and Transportation where he quickly established himself as a leader on one of the biggest issues facing this generation - climate change. As Chair, Assemblymember Bloom has pushed for increasing renewable energy development and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and promoting smart and sustainable planning that expands affordable housing and reduces traffic congestion and commute times. Through his leadership, Assemblymember Bloom has made reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the quality of life now and for future generations a core mission of the committee. In addition to serving as Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Resources and Transportation, Assemblymember Bloom serves on the Assembly Committees on Appropriations, Budget, Business and Professions, Higher Education, and Transportation. For the last three years, Assemblymember Bloom also served on the Legislative Budget Conference Committee which is a small, select group of legislators tasked with negotiating the state budget with the Governor. Prior to being elected to the California State Assembly in 2012, Assemblymember Bloom served on the Santa Monica City Council for 13 years where he served as Mayor three times and Mayor Pro Tempore twice. He also served as Chair of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission, Chair of the Westside Cities Council, and as a special California State Senate appointment to the California Coastal Commission. Born in Philadelphia, Assemblymember Bloom grew up in Altadena and West Los Angeles. He attended Fairfax High School, the University of California (Los Angeles and Berkeley) and Loyola School of Law and holds a B.A. in Communication and Public Policy as well as a Juris Doctor degree. After law school, he practiced family law for nearly 30 years and worked as the executive director for a non-profit that assisted low-income and homeless clients. He also served as a volunteer Judge Pro Tem and mediator for the Los Angeles Superior Courts and on the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Family Law Section. Assemblymember Bloom lives in Santa Monica with his wife of 33 years, Robbie Black, a healthcare professional and administrator at Cedars-Sinai Health Center in Los Angeles. The Bloom family includes two adult children, Zac and Emmett, two chickens and one dog.

4 Joshua Roth Chief Technology Officer Ring Josh is the Chief Technology Officer at Ring where he helps coordinate and oversee all aspects of the company s operations. In addition to Ring, Josh is an active member of the startup community in Los Angeles, acting as an advisor to Double M Capital, Plus Capital, and Twenty20, is on the Board of Trustees for The Village School, and formerly served on the boards of WhisperText and Blushington, LLC. For over 20 years, Josh has been the CTO of multiple companies in Southern California including Onestop Internet, Unsubscribe.com, Blackboard Connect, The NTI Group and Rent.com. Josh is married with three beautiful children and holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles. In his free time he is an avid LA Kings fan, UCLA Basketball fan, and loves to coach baseball.
