2008 BLUES BARBECUE HONOREE SEAN COSTELLO Sean Costello was born April 16, 1979, in Philadelphia, PA. He received his first guitar for his ninth birthday and moved to Atlanta that same year.

When Sean was just 14, he won a major talent show sponsored by the Beale Street Blues Society and shortly afterwards, he formed his first band.

3 2008 BLUES BARBECUE HONOREE SEAN COSTELLO Sean Costello was born April 16, 1979, in Philadelphia, PA. He received his first guitar for his ninth birthday and moved to Atlanta that same year. Initially, he taught himself to play rock songs, but a chance meeting with local bluesman Felix Reyes at a guitar show provided him with the friendly mentor who would stir him towards the blues. When Sean was just 14, he won a major talent show sponsored by the Beale Street Blues Society and shortly afterwards, he formed his first band. Sean recorded his first album, Call The Cops, with the Jive Bombers, in A collection of 1940s and 1950s-style Chicago blues, Call The Cops was a tribute to his blues heroes, and showed him to be a blues purist and, thankfully, not another Stevie Ray Vaughan imitator. With the self-titled Sean Costello on Artemis Records in 2005, Sean assuredly moved well beyond his blues roots. The CD is loaded with superb covers of R&B and soul gems, finds him comfortably singing ballads, and demonstrates his growing abilities as a songwriter. Insiders expected this CD to be Sean s breakthrough to stardom; however, Artemis folded shortly after its release; hence, the album was not well promoted and never received the publicity it deserved. Sean s national exposure grew after he contributed to Susan Tedeschi s 1998 gold record Just Won t Burn and toured with Susan as her lead guitarist. He released his second CD, Cuttin In in early 2000 and the record earned him a W.C. Handy Award nomination in the Best New Artist category. Sean followed-up with Moanin for Molasses in These two recordings brought critical acclaim and demonstrated Sean s development of his own unique guitar sound and passionate vocal delivery. They also established Sean as a sought after musician for major blues festivals. He toured the U.S. and Europe, shared the stage with blues giants like B.B. King and Buddy Guy, and made the cover of Blues Revue.

In 2007, Sean received wide acclaim for his lead guitar work on 2007 s Long Time Coming, the Blues Music Award-nominated comeback album by 77 year old blues shouter Nappy Brown.

The following year, Sean returned with his own recording, We Can Get Together on West Coast blues label Delta Groove Music. This 11 song CD is rawer and more stripped down than Sean Costello. Sean said he wanted to bring in my best buddies and capture the Atlanta scene. He enlisted the other members of his trio, Aaron Trubic on bass and Paul Campanella, Jr. on drums, and fleshed the CD out with guest appearances by Jon Liebman, Oliver Wood, Rich Iannucci, Adam Mewherter, Ray Hangen, and Donnie McCormick. Many critics hailed it as his best record yet. Sadly, the world tragically lost this talented young musician on April 15, 2008, one day short of his 29th birthday. In his memory, his mom, Debbie Smith, established The Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research. Information about the foundation can be found on Sean s website at This year s WRFG Labor Day Blues Barbecue is dedicated to Sean Costello, marking the first time that this honor has been bestowed posthumously. He headlined the Barbecue back in All of us in the Atlanta blues community wish that Sean were still alive and could be here with us to enjoy this tribute. The Holliday brothers were born in Jackson, MS, while Eric was born in California. They all moved to Atlanta at an early age and grew up around the corner from each other.

5 OUR PERFORMERS THE SOUL SHAKERS The Soul Shakers consists of three brothers, Art, Jacob, and Adam Holliday, and their life long friend Eric Pullen. Art plays guitar and sings, Jacob lays down the bass lines, Adam plays piano and organ, and Eric lays down the beat on drums. The Holliday brothers were born in Jackson, MS, while Eric was born in California. They all moved to Atlanta at an early age and grew up around the corner from each other. (Eric, Art, and Sean Costello were boyhood friends, and Art learned guitar from Sean.) The band formed in 2001 as a three piece. Eric, Art and Jake rented an old, hot, and dusty 10 x 12 storage unit in Marietta to start working on the intense music that would define their musical style. The band practiced and gigged for about two years as a three-piece before Adam joined in on the keys, adding a new dimension to the band s sound. The Soul Shakers play a variety of music including old school blues, soul, swing, rhythm and blues, and rock n roll. The band cites Otis Rush, Earl Hooker, Booker T & the MG s, and Bob Dylan as influences. ZYDEFUNK featuring Charlie Wooton Zydefunk is a high energy, Louisiana-inspired band that merges together blues, R&B, funk, rock, and jazz to produce a spicy gumbo unlike anything else heard in Atlanta. Led by Louisiana-born bassist Charlie Wooton, who has toured with Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Bank, Zydefunk includes Jody Davies (guitar & vocals), Ricky Fargo (drums & vocals), Marcus James Henderson (keys, sax, flute & vocals), and Jeff Hunt (washboard & percussion). Together, they have released one, self-titled CD. Charlie, Jody, Ricky, and Marcus have also recently embarked on a new musical endeavor, the Charlie Wooton Project, an adventurous funk band. Charlie was a member of Coop Da Ville, an all-star band featuring him, Sean Costello, Donnie McCormick, and Oliver Wood. Greg Baba will be sitting in on drums for Ricky Fargo today.

6 JOE MCGUINNESS & OLIVER WOOD A relative newcomer of the Atlanta blues scene, Joe McGuinness displays an incredible talent for fingerpicking and slide guitar, combined with powerful, soul-filled vocals. With his flowing dreadlocks, he cuts a striking figure. His recording debut, From these seeds., produced by Damien Lewis, is an amazing listening experience. He is joined on the CD by the late Sean Costello, Charlie Wooton, Donnie McCormick, and, his partner at the Blues Barbecue today, Oliver Wood. Guitarist/singer-songwriter Oliver Wood is well known to Atlanta blues fans as one of the founding members of King Johnson. Unfortunately, that successful band disbanded last year when bassist Chris Long relocated to the Midwest. Since that time, Oliver has been focusing on a new project, Burnt Bacon, and collaborating with his brother, Chris (of the jazz band Martin, Medeski, and Wood), as The Wood Brothers. The Wood Brothers second CD, Loaded, an excellent collection of rootsy blues and folk songs, was released on the legendary Blue Note Records this past April. THE JOE KROWN ORGAN COMBO The Joe Krown Organ Combo comes to us from New Orleans and features Joe Krown on keyboards, Brint Anderson on guitar, and Mike Barras on drums. An instrumental, New Orleans-styled funk and groove band, featuring the big sound of Joe s Hammond B-3 organ, the band formed in the fall of The Combo has released three CDs: Down and Dirty (1999), Funkyard (2002); and Livin Large (2005). As the Joe Krown Trio, Joe, Brint, and Mike released Old Friends in Joe Krown played keyboards with Clarence Gatemouth Brown & Gate s Express from 1992 until Gatemouth s passing in 2005, and appeared on several of Brown s CDs. This month, he, guitarist/singer Walter "Wolfman" Washington, and drummer Russell Batiste are releasing Live at the Maple Leaf, which was recorded live at one of the trio s regular Sunday night gigs at the renowned New Orleans club.

HEAVEN DAVIS Heaven Wildchild Davis sings classic and contemporary blues with soul. She started singing as a little girl in her church choir.

7 Brint has played guitar for both Dr. John and George Porter s Runnin Pardners, among others. Mike Barras has drummed for Amanda Shaw, Mulebone, Stavin Chain, Lenny McDaniel, Marva Wright, and the House Levelers. HEAVEN DAVIS Heaven Wildchild Davis sings classic and contemporary blues with soul. She started singing as a little girl in her church choir. As a young woman, Heaven performed with several different funk, pop, and R&B bands. In the process, she discovered that she liked all kinds of music. Eventually, she found the blues. This broad base of experience allows Heaven to sing a song with the kind of feeling that lets all those diverse influences flow through. Her CD Steamy, released in 2005, brought her glowing reviews and worldwide attention. It was a finalist in the Blues Foundation s competition for Best Self-Produced CD of the Year. She has also released a live album and a handful of singles, including a remake of You Are My Sunshine that was a big hit on the beach music scene. THE BREEZE KINGS The Breeze Kings are one of Atlanta s best-loved blues bands, having won Creative Loafing s Reader s Choice Award for Best Blues Band in Atlanta in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and They were finalists at the 2005 International Blues Challenge. On the scene since 1997, they are led by singer and harp player Carlos Breeze Capote. Guitarist Jim Ransone is one of the finest in town. Matt Sickles plays bass and Terrence Prather plays drums. (Both Matt and Terrence are former Sean Costello bandmates.) The Breeze Kings have released two CDs, Tying One On For The People in 1999 and You Got To Bring Some To Get Some in Their sound brings back memories of the glory days of Chicago blues in the 1950 s and early 1960 s. Carlos and his wife Terri just welcomed a new daughter, Carmen Maria Capote, into this world on August 19, 2008.
