2 Welcome to the Sale Dear Fellow Cattlemen Anne and I would like to invite you to our 4th annual Bull and Commercial female sale January 9th, It s been a real good year for us on the farm. We have been focusing our efforts on genetic improvement, and we are excited to show you the results! The results of stacking generations of artificial insemination and embryo transfer work have allowed us to dial in the predictability our customers have come to expect. We have a large selection of calving ease bulls that will excite you. With over 25 bulls with a CED (calving ease direct) score above 7 finding a calving ease bull won t be difficult! By design we also have a large number of high growth moderate birth bulls. Please pay special attention to the Waylon and 7229 bulls that bring both explosive growth and improved IMF and Ribeye. For outsource genetics that can help with hybrid vigor we have 7 Sim bulls that have shown explosive growth. Some of our most impressive bulls will be the CC&7 A140 sons that come from the sale topping sire from our first bull sale! Sons of GBA Upward 2327 and Iron Mtn. Z014 bred to performance cows have a lot to offer on growth, maternal traits, and calving ease. Anne will serve lunch at 11 am and the sale will start at noon. Bulls and commercial females will be on display after lunch on Friday. Visitors are welcome at the farm prior to the sale as well. Cattle will not be released from the premises until payment is received in full. Purchaser assumes the risk of death or injury to their livestock immediately after the animal is sold. Insurance is available to insure the animal until delivery to the buyer s ranch, at the buyer s cost. Gretsch Brothers will provide health certificates for interstate shipment to any of the lower 48 states. Cattle will sell under the terms and conditions as recommended by the American Association. 4 Helpful Information Gretsch Brothers Bull Development Bulls were gathered at weaning time from 6 to 9 months of age. All bulls were weighed, vaccinated with a modified live IBR BVD with Lepto, and ear tattooed. Parasite control was given. The bulls were fed a free choice amount of high quality hay and bailage. This year the concentrate we used was Purina s Accuration feed. This feed has a built in limiter that allows the bulls to eat free choice, but not over consume. The bull s consumption of the Accuration was around 2% of their body weight per day until yearling. The bulls are then slowed down on concentrate to transition the bulls to higher forage diets. The bulls are used to having people around them. Docility is monitored both in the pasture and as they are processed for weights, vaccinations, freeze branding, carcass scanning, semen testing, and clipping. The bulls are handled a lot! We are feeding the bulls to develop an athletic and toned bull with sound feet and leg development that will last the customer for years of good service. Additionally, bulls were vaccinated within 30 days of the sale for additional health protection at the sale facility. Gretsch Female Breeding Guarantee Heifers are guaranteed to be pregnant the day of the sale. They have been palpated pregnant by a qualified veterinarian. Purchasers will have 45 days from the date of sale to observe for signs of nonpregnancy and report any open females to the sale management. If a qualified veterinarian determines that a heifer that was sold as pregnant is in fact open, then the purchaser will be eligible for a 25 percent refund of the purchase price from the consignor of the open heifer. The consignor and/or sale management reserves the right to retest any heifer in question for pregnancy. Targeting the CAB Brand We annually use carcass ultrasound technology by Dr. Dean Pringle to determine ribeye area, rib fat thickness, intramuscular fat, and rump fat thickness at yearling time. This data is highly heritable to the calves that will be sired by these bulls. This information is included in the bulls EPD data. We will once again have the CAB logo next to all bulls that meet the recommended requirements for Targeting the Brand! Those requirements are EPD s for Marbling in the top 40% at or greater and $Grid in the top 50% with a value or higher, and ribeye of.31 or higher. The demand for Certified Beef continues to grow with an increase in growth by 14 million pounds last year alone! A record 896 million pounds of CAB was produced last year. Fertility Testing of Bulls Within 30 days prior to the sale Don Weir The Bull Whisperer will perform a fertility test on all bulls. A semen sample is collected to determine motility and morphology. Don will also measure scrotal circumference for reporting on the animals EPD s. This is a good indicator of fertility in the bull and its future progeny. Reproductive Guarantee: We know that these bulls will look great when you take them home and put them in with your cows, but we realize that s not their main function! We feel like we have done everything in our control to provide you with a functional breeding bull. If you have problems with your bull during the first breeding season let us know as soon as possible. We will work with you to insure your investment and your satisfaction guaranteed! 5 Expected Progeny Differences (EPD s) Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny ofother animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plusor minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. GROWTH Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. MATERNAL Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. ULTRASOUND ADJUSTED MEASUREMENTS Adj. %IMF (IMF), The percent intramuscular fat (marbling) adjusted to 365 days of age. Heritability for marbling is in the moderate range. Adj. Rib Fat (Rib Fat), This is the off-test backfat measured in inches adjusted to 365 days of age. Adj. REA (REA), Ribeye Area: Each bull s ribeye area measured in square inches and adjusted to one year of age. $VALUE INDEXES Weaned Calf Value (), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Beef Value (), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires., score is a convenient way of describing the skeletal size of cattle. With appropriate height growth curves, most animals should maintain the same frame score throughout their life, while their actual height increases with age. This allows one frame score value to be used regardless of when the animal was evaluated. However, the frame score will change for animals that mature earlier or later compared with average animals. Growth Measurements BW, the actual birth weight of the animal Adj 205, the adjusted weaing weight of a calf relative to its contemporaries. Adj 365, the adjusted yearling weight of a calf relative to its contemporaries. Bulls with a combined CED of +10 or greater and a BW EPD of less than +2.0 are considered heifer bulls. 7 A word about the Synergy bulls! The dictionary says that synergy is the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements. In our first bull sale four years ago Mr. Penny Harris bought our top selling CC & 7 bull out of an Image Maker cow. Their combination was Synergy! He was a great bull!
