There's Eric Clapton, 3 Doors Down, Filter, The Goo Goo Dolls, Aerosmith, Alanis Morissette, Third Eye Blind and Sheryl Crow. However, some features are present on most guitars. The photo below shows the different parts of an electric guitar. The headstock 1 contains the metal machine heads 1. The truss rod 1. At the neck joint 2. The body 3 is typically made of wood with a hard, polymerized finish. Strings vibrating in the magnetic field of the pickups 3. Some guitars have piezo pickups, in addition to or instead of magnetic pickups. Some guitars have a fixed bridge 3. Others have a spring-loaded hinged bridge called a vibrato bar, tremolo bar, or whammy bar, which lets players bend notes or chords up or down in pitch or perform a vibrato embellishment. A plastic pickguard on some guitars protects the body from scratches or covers the control cavity, which holds most of the wiring. The degree to which the choice of woods and other materials in the solid-guitar body 3 affects the sonic character of the amplified signal is disputed. Many believe it is highly significant, while others think the difference between woods is subtle. In acoustic and archtop guitars, wood choices more clearly affect tone. Woods typically used in solid-body electric guitars include alder brighter, but well rounded, swamp ash similar to alder, but with more pronounced highs and lows, mahogany dark, bassy, warm, poplar similar to alder, and basswood very neutral. For this reason it is often placed as a "cap" on a guitar made primarily of another wood. Cheaper guitars are often made of cheaper woods, such as plywood, pine or agathis â not true hardwoodsâ which can affect durability and tone. Though most guitars are made of wood, any material may be used. Materials such as plastic, metal, and even cardboard have been used in some instruments. The guitar output jack typically provides a monaural signal. Many guitars with active electronics use a jack with an extra contact normally used for stereo. These guitars use the extra contact to break the ground connection to the on-board battery to preserve battery life when the guitar is unplugged. These guitars require a mono plug to close the internal switch and connect the battery to ground. These have a tip and sleeve configuration referred to as a TS phone connector. The voltage is usually around 1 to 9 millivolts. A few guitars feature stereo output, such as Rickenbacker guitars equipped with Rick-O-Sound. There are a variety of ways the "stereo" effect may be implemented. Commonly, but not exclusively, stereo guitars route the neck and bridge pickups to separate output buses on the guitar. A stereo cable then routes each pickup to its own signal chain or amplifier. Some studio instruments, notably certain Gibson Les Paul models, incorporate a low-impedance three-pin XLR connector for balanced audio. Many exotic arrangements and connectors exist that support features such as midi and hexaphonic pickups. Bridge and tailpiece systems[ edit ] The bridge and tailpiece, while serving separate purposes, work closely together to affect playing style and tone. There are four basic types of bridge and tailpiece systems on electric guitars. Within these four types are many variants. Hard-tail[ edit ] A hard-tail guitar bridge anchors the strings at or directly behind the bridge and is fastened securely to the top of the instrument. These appear on Rickenbackers, Gretsches, Epiphones, a wide variety of archtop guitars, particularly Jazz guitars, and the Gibson Les Paul. It uses a lever "vibrato arm" attached to the bridge that can temporarily slacken or tighten the strings to alter the pitch. A player can use this to create a vibrato or a portamento effect. Early vibrato systems were often unreliable and made the guitar go out of tune easily. They also had a limited pitch range. Later Fender designs were better, but Fender held the patent on these, so other companies used older designs for many years. Detail of a Squier-made Fender Stratocaster. Note the vibrato arm, the 3 single-coil pickups, the volume and tone knobs. With expiration of the Fender patent on the Stratocaster -style vibrato, various improvements on this type of internal, multi-spring vibrato system are now available. Floyd Rose introduced one of the first improvements on the vibrato system in many years when, in the late s, he experimented with "locking" nuts and bridges that prevent the guitar from losing tuning, even under heavy vibrato bar use. String-through body[ edit ] Tune-o-matic with "strings through the body" construction without stopbar The fourth type of system employs string-through body anchoring. The strings pass over the bridge saddles, then through holes through the top of the guitar body to the back. The strings are Page 1

typically anchored in place at the back of the guitar by metal ferrules. Pickup music technology Compared to an acoustic guitar, which has a hollow body, electric guitars make much less audible sound when their strings are plucked, so electric guitars are normally plugged into a guitar amplifier and speaker. When an electric guitar is played, string movement produces a signal by generating i. The signal passes through the tone and volume circuits to the output jack, and through a cable to an amplifier. Pickups on a Fender Squier "Fat Strat" guitarâ a "humbucker" pickup on the left and two single-coil pickups on the right. Because of their natural inductive qualities, all magnetic pickups tend to pick up ambient, usually unwanted electromagnetic interference or EMI. The most common source is or Hz hum from power transmission systems house wiring, etc. Since nearly all amplifiers and audio equipment associated with electric guitars must be plugged in, it is a continuing technical challenge to reduce or eliminate unwanted hum. Humbuckers have two coils of opposite magnetic and electric polarity to produce a differential signal. Electromagnetic noise that hits both coils equally tries to drive the pickup signal toward positive on one coil and toward negative on the other, which cancels out the noise. The two coils are wired in phase, so their signal adds together. This high combined inductance of the two coils leads to the richer, "fatter" tone associated with humbucking pickups. Piezoelectric pickups use a "sandwich" of quartz crystal or other piezoelectric material, typically placed beneath the string saddles or nut. These devices respond to pressure changes from all vibration at these specific points. Optical pickups are a type of pickup that sense string and body vibrations using infrared LED light. These pickups are not sensitive to EMI. Some "hybrid" electric guitars are equipped with additional microphone, piezoelectric, optical, or other types of transducers to approximate an acoustic instrument tone and broaden the sonic palette of the instrument. Guitar necks[ edit ] Electric guitar necks vary in composition and shape. The primary metric of guitar necks is the scale length, which is the vibrating length of the strings from nut to bridge. A typical Fender guitar uses a While the scale length of the Les Paul is often described as Opinions vary regarding the effect of scale length on tone and feel. Popular opinion holds that longer scale length contributes to greater amplitude. Reports of playing feel are greatly complicated by the many factors involved in this perception. String gauge and design, neck construction and relief, guitar setup, playing style and other factors contribute to the subjective impression of playability or feel. A bolt-on neck Necks are described as bolt-on, set-in, or neck-through, depending on how they attach to the body. Set-in necks are glued to the body in the factory. They are said to have a warmer tone and greater sustain. Leo Fender pioneered bolt-on necks on electric guitars to facilitate easy adjustment and replacement. Neck-through instruments extend the neck the length of the instrument, so that it forms the center of the body, and are known for long sustain and for being particularly sturdy. Historically, the bolt-on style has been more popular for ease of installation and adjustment. Since bolt-on necks can be easily removed, there is an after-market in replacement bolt-on necks from companies such as Warmoth and Mighty Mite. Some instrumentsâ notably most Gibson modelsâ continue to use set-in glued necks. Neck-through bodies are somewhat more common in bass guitars. Materials for necks are selected for dimensional stability and rigidity, and some allege that they influence tone. Hardwoods are preferred, with maple, mahogany, and ash topping the list. The neck and fingerboard can be made from different materials; for example, a guitar may have a maple neck with a rosewood or ebony fingerboard. In the s, designers began to use exotic man-made materials such as aircraft-grade aluminum, carbon fiber, and ebonol. Aside from possible engineering advantages, some feel that in relation to the rising cost of rare tonewoods, man-made materials may be economically preferable and more ecologically sensitive. However, wood remains popular in production instruments, though sometimes in conjunction with new materials. Vigier guitars, for example, use a wooden neck reinforced by embedding a light, carbon fiber rod in place of the usual heavier steel bar or adjustable steel truss rod. After-market necks made entirely from carbon fiber fit existing bolt-on instruments. Few, if any, extensive formal investigations have been widely published that confirm or refute claims over the effects of different woods or materials on electric guitar sound. A neck-through bass guitar Several neck shapes appear on guitars, including shapes known as C necks, U necks, and V necks. These refer to the cross-sectional shape of the neck especially near the nut. Several sizes of fret wire are available, with traditional players often preferring thin frets, and metal shredders liking thick frets. Thin frets are considered better for playing chords, while thick frets allow lead Page 2

guitarists to bend notes with less effort. An electric guitar with a folding neck called the "Foldaxe" was designed and built for Chet Atkins by Roger C. Fingerboards vary as much as necks. The fingerboard surface usually has a cross-sectional radius that is optimized to accommodate finger movement for different playing techniques. Fingerboard radius typically ranges from nearly flat a very large radius to radically arched a small radius. The vintage Fender Telecaster, for example, has a typical small radius of approximately 7. I was originally sent one guitar, but through a mix-up at the Fender warehouse, I was sent a second while I was in the process of finishing up this review, so I was able to test one example of this model extensively over a few weeks, and closely examine a second guitar of the same type for a few days. The bevels for the tummy cut and forearm contour are smoother and less angular, and more in line with the American made models. The finish on the body is gloss polyester, and is very well applied, with no visible flaws. In my experience, Fender Ensenada has always been good about the quality of the finishes on their bodies, and the new Player Series features some brand new colors. The four available colors correspond with fingerboard wood options. For those who are unfamiliar with it, pau ferro has similar sonic qualities to rosewood. The assembly and setup from the factory was generally good. The locking Floyd Rose bridge was well-adjusted all the way around, so the intonation was good right out of the box too. The Floyd Rose is a double-locking vibrato system that does a far better job of staying in tune than other systems, even when used aggressively. I was able to "dive bomb" to the point where the strings were totally slack, and the system still returned to pitch reliably. The frets on the 3-color sunburst could have used just a bit more polishing - they felt a bit gritty on the top when I first started playing the guitar, but this went away fairly quickly. Fortunately, the fret edges are smooth and well-dressed. The 22 frets are medium jumbos. There are white dot fret markers on both the front and the side of the fingerboard. There was a very small dark spot in the satin finish of the neck near the headstock on the sunburst guitar. The scale length is the traditional Nut width is 1. An allen wrench to tighten and loosen it is also included, along with a second one for adjusting the truss rod. The tuning machines are smooth working Fender-branded Standard cast-style sealed units. They have a Of course, with a Floyd Rose installed, once you get the guitar tuned up and the nut locked down, the tuners themselves are out of the equation, and any touch-up you need to do is handled with the fine tuners on the Floyd Rose bridge itself. The headstock features a vintage "spaghetti" style Fender logo. The standard truss rod adjusts at the headstock end, which is much easier than vintage Fenders, which have the truss rod adjustment at the body end of the neck. The neck pocket is nice and tight, with no gaps on either side. The neck is attached with four bolts, and the neck plate features a Fender F logo. Fender is using new pickups on the Player Series models. A standard five-way switch with a parchment colored switch tip is included. In position 1 the bridge humbucker runs by itself, position 2 gives you the outer coil of the humbucker plus the middle pickup, position 3 is the middle pickup alone, position 4 is the middle and neck pickups together, and position 5 is the neck pickup by itself. Position 1 is a bit hotter than the others, as you would expect, but the other positions are not unduly weak or under-powered in comparison. Positions 1, 2 and 4 are all hum-free, which means the middle pickup is reverse wound and reverse magnetic polarity RWRP. The one closest to the strings is a master volume control. The other two are tone controls. The tone controls have received an update on the new Player Series too. Traditionally a Strat has had one tone control assigned to the neck pickup and the second assigned to the middle pickup. On the new Player Series the middle knob adjusts the tone for the neck and middle pickups, while the second tone knob is dedicated to the bridge pickup. It may not be "traditional", but it is a far more practical and useful arrangement. Underneath the pickguard the control and pickup cavities are painted with black shielding paint, and the pickguard has a layer of foil too, so the guitar is very well shielded. Limitations One of the white dot position inlays on the 3-color sunburst guitar had a ding in the center of it. As was true with the previous Standard series, no case or gig bag is included, so budget accordingly. The satin-finished neck has a very comfortable profile and I liked the fast-playing, smooth finish. The body feels more comfortable too, with smoother, more gradual contours, and the pickups are a significant step up from the MIM Standard Series, so it sounds better too. The changes to the rest of the electronics, with the reassigned tone controls, makes sense, and gives you a lot more tonal versatility. The new colors offer you some cool Page 4

looking cosmetic options as well. The switch from rosewood to pau ferro for the fretboard feels more familiar than you might think, and makes sense considering the increasing restrictions on rosewood, although I do wish Fender would do something to round the fretboard edges a bit - the sharpness there is my biggest complaint. The finish blemish behind the headstock and nick to the fretboard dot on one of the two guitars I examined are minor niggles in comparison - neither of which could be felt while playing the guitar. Page 5

Chapter 3 : Electric guitar - Wikipedia With so many options available in the world today, buying a guitar that perfectly represents your own style, tastes, and attitude has never been easier. ebook The Players - Powered by Fender ibook download Fender Guitars and Amplifiers. Various 2- or 3-color sunbursts, Various shades of white, blue, red, green, etc. The bass is distinct from the Precision Bass in that its tone is brighter and richer in the midrange and treble with less emphasis on the fundamental harmonic. Because of this, many bass players who want to be more "forward" in the mix including smaller bands such as power trios prefer the Jazz Bass. The sound of the Fender Jazz Bass has been fundamental in the development of signature sounds in certain musical genres, such as funk, disco, reggae, blues, progressive rock, heavy metal and jazz fusion. History Edit First introduced in as the Deluxe Model, it was marketed as a stablemate to the Jazzmaster guitar which was also marketed as a Deluxe Model in its own right. It was renamed the Jazz Bass as Fender felt that its redesigned neckâ narrower and more rounded than that of the Precision Bassâ would appeal more to jazz musicians. The Jazz Bass has two single coil pickups with two pole pieces per string. This gave the bass a stronger treble sound to compete with the Rickenbacker bass, which had been introduced in and was famously "bright". As well as having a slightly different, less symmetrical and more contoured body shape known in Fender advertising as the "Offset Waist Contour" body, the Jazz Bass neck is noticeably narrower at the nut than that of the Fender Precision Bass. The original intention was to encourage upright-bass players to switch to electric bass. The original Jazz Bass had two stacked knob pots with volume and tone control for each pickup. Around it received three control knobs: Despite this new feature, many stacked knob models were made until about Another feature the initial models had were the "Spring Felt Mutes", which were present on basses from until The purpose of those mutes was to dampen the overtones and the sustain, and were screwed in place between the bridge and aft pickup. Further, the large metal cavity created by this cover engulfed the treble pickup so as treble volume was increased, it was noticed to be a "microphonic feedback-inducing trap". The cover is still available however as an after-market option for players who like the "hollow" quality that sub-feedback-level resonance contributes to the "vintage" sound. A number of cosmetic changes were made to the instrument when CBS purchased the Fender companies in Fender also switched to the three-bolt neck "micro-tilt adjustable" neck and the "bullet" truss rod in mid-to-late before reverting to the more standard four-bolt neck fixing and dot-shaped fretboard markers in In Fender introduced the Japanese-made Fender Performer Bass, also with micro-tilt neck, designed by John Page and intended to be an Elite version of the Jazz Bass, however the radical styling was not popular and production ceased the same year. Unlike the Fender Precision Bass Plus, which had a "maple-neck" option, the Boner Jazz Bass was offered only with a rosewood fingerboard. A fourth push button control is available on American-made Jazz Basses produced between mid until Known as the "S-1 Switch", this feature allows the pickups to operate in standard, parallel wiring, or alternatively in series wiring when the switch is depressed. While in series, both pickups function as a single unit with one volume control, giving the Jazz Bass a sound more similar to the Precision Bass. The two pickups are built to be opposite from each other in both magnetic polarity and electrical phase, so that when heard together, hum is cancelledâ the humbucking effect. The Highway One Jazz Bass is a moderately priced American-made bass introduced in, featuring a Leo Quan BadAss II bridge with grooved saddles, Posiflex graphite neck support rods, s styling and a Greasebucket tone circuit since In, the American Series models were replaced by a new American Standard line, which greatly differs from the first-generation American Standard Series basses introduced in The American Standard Jazz Bass retained the "American Series" rolled-edge neck with highly detailed nut and fret work, as well as the familiar rounded body shape with the vintage body radius, but deleted the S-1 switching system and incorporated a new high-mass vintage bridge, Hipshot lightweight vintage-style tuning machines, a richer and deeper neck tint, gloss maple or rosewood fingerboard and satin back for smooth playability. It also has a thinner finish undercoat that lets the body breathe and improves resonance. This makes it ideal for slap playing as well as finger-style players. The bridge pickup gives a tone with more treble, while the neck pickup will yield a rounder sound. The ability to blend the volume of both pickups allows for a Page 6

wider variety of tones than the Precision Bass can produce. Pickups are RWRP reverse wound, reverse polarity from one another, so all hum will be canceled when both pickups are at full volume. Having both pickups cranked up at full volume produces the classic scooped, "growling" sound which many playersâ such as Marcus Miller and Will Leeâ use for slap bass playing. This sound is the product of certain frequencies from both pickups being out of phase and cancelling each other, leaving a "scoop" on the midrange. This is similar to what happens on some guitars when you blend the sounds from two different pickups, such as the Fender Stratocaster. Some "Deluxe" Jazz Bass models feature an active pre-amp usually with three bands of equalization in place of a single passive tone control, these basses have three separate equalizer controls: They came with 22 frets, abalone dot position inlays and an volt power supply on some models. The American Deluxe Jazz Bass available in four-string fretted and fretless, five-string fretted and left-hand versions featured two Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Jazz Bass pickups, designed by pickup designer Bill Lawrence. Fender used downsized bodies to accommodate the fret neck and reshaped the pickguard with nine screw holes. American Deluxes produced between and were initially available with "single-pole" pickups designed by John Suhr. These were soon changed to the Bill Turner-designed dual-coil Ceramic Noiseless units with nickel-plated gold-plated on certain models polepieces until the advent of the Bill Lawrence-designed Samarium Cobalt series in The asymmetrical five-bolt neck plate, along with the smooth contoured heel allow much easier access to the upper registers. Fender discontinued these models in The Mexican Deluxe Active Jazz Bass combines many of the features of the American Deluxe models with a traditional Standard Jazz Bass body, vintage-style hardware and a fret rosewood four-string or pau ferro five-string fingerboard. It also sports a three-band active circuit powered by two dual-coil ceramic Noiseless Jazz Bass pickups and a 9V supply. Features include an oversized select alder or premium ash body, a modern 34"-scale C-shape maple neck with an unbound rosewood, pau ferro or maple fingerboard featuring triangular pearloid block inlays and 21 medium-jumbo frets. Models manufactured prior to formerly known as American Classics were identical to the mids American Deluxe basses in appearance, excepting the fret bound maple neck featuring a rosewood fretboard and white block inlays. Fender discontinued the five-string version in A Mexican-made Standard Series J-Bass from with a black finish and a tinted maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. As of December 5,, the Standard J-Bass has been updated with CBS era-style decals, a three-ply parchment pickguard and a tinted maple neck with rosewood or maple fingerboard also available in a fretless version with a rosewood fingerboard and 20 inlaid white fretline markers. Other features include two staggered bi-pole single-coil pickups and a return to the black bakelite control knobs. Models produced before came for a period with black Stratocaster control knobs. The five-string version introduced in, available with pau ferro or rosewood fingerboard and a five-in-line tuner configuration with Gotoh Mini machineheads c. All five-string Jazz basses came with pau ferro fretboard since some US Deluxe models were also available with a plain maple neck option. Fender offers its 5-string basses with rosewood or maple fretboard as of after discontinuing the pau ferro fingerboard option in late In, Fender introduced the fretted and fretless Steve Bailey signature models, its first six-string Jazz Basses to feature a 9.
