1 GOAL Episode 13 I Knew It! Broadcasting date : 3 March, 2003 RECAP OF PREVIOUS EPISODE COMMENTARY After Manni s drug test is positive, Alex tells him he s sacked. Get you boots and get out of my club. COMMENTARY Joe thinks that Manni is innocent, but Sophie is sure that she hasn t made a mistake. COMMENTARY (CONT D) Emma s confused but Manni reassures her. I haven t done anything wrong. I can see that now. COMMENTARY Paul tells the press about the drugs, and gets Doug to plant some more drugs in Manni s flat. POLICE OFFICER I m arresting you on suspicion of possession of an illegal substance. COMMENTARY The police find the drugs and arrest Manni. COMMENTARY (CONT D) Who will believe Manni now? FANS Paul, Paul! Excuse me, Paul! Could I have your autograph mate? Yeah, sure. (TO ) Hey, did you hear the police found drugs at Manni's house? I did. What a stupid boy, don't you think? 1

2 POLICE OFFICER We'll send the drugs away to be looked at and we shall have the result in about six weeks. During that time you must not leave the country. Do you understand? POLICE OFFICER (CONT'D) That's all for now. Collect your things from downstairs, then you can go. BRIEF BRIEF But I am innocent! I haven't done anything! The court will decide that. Will I have to go to prison? If you are found guilty, you will. BRIEF (CONT'D) This should make you happy. BRIEF (CONT'D) Your friend Joe, he s in the team this afternoon. Because of the amount of reporters outside your house, I've booked you into a hotel. They won't find you there. Come on, let's go. CHARLIE CHARLIE Are you alright? Fine. Paul sent you some flowers. CHARLIE (CONT'D) Shall I put them over here? CHARLIE (CONT'D) He also sent you a ticket for the game. Maybe it'd do you good to go? CHARLIE (CONT'D) I'll leave it here, shall I? 3 I never want to think about or see Manni again for as long as I live! COMMENTATOR It's the biggest match of the season for London Rangers, and their biggest match ever. If they win today against London United, they'll be champions of the British League for the first time. Team news for Rangers, disgraced Manni's out, managers son, Paul Carter, takes his place. JIM (TO ) JIM JIM ANDY Dont' worry, mate! Paul Carter's back on the team and we're going to win! Well done. I hear you're in the team. Thanks. I'm sure you and I will do very well together. Yeah, it's just going to feel strange without Manni. I can't stop thinking about him. I know what you mean. I don't believe he had those drugs in our house without me knowing about them. 4 You must be really upset about Manni and these drugs. Of course I'm upset. It makes you look bad, doesn't it? I mean, all the work you did, training him, looking after his diet, getting him fit - and in the end he wasn't fit because of your work at all, it was because of the drugs! That's not true! So, why did he take drugs? Well, that not my fault. Really? My father doesn't agree with you. What do you mean? He'll tell you himself. CHARLIE CHARLIE You can have your old room back, but I have to say that I'm not pleased to see you, Manni. But I haven't done anything, Charlie. I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. If it was up to me, I wouldn't let you stay here. Just don't bother Emma while you're here, OK? I've been thinking about this business with Manni - and you haven't come out of it very well. 7 who wears a captain s arm band. It's a debut for Joe Saunders, who partners Jim Gebby in defence, what a big day for him. Manni? (CONT'D) What are you doing here? I came to see the match to watch Joe play... You're not supposed to be here. I thought you were still at the police station. They let me go on bail. Manni why did you do it? I worked so hard to get you fit and you were cheating all along! Do you really believe that I took drugs? You saw how much effort I put in to training! That's why I'm so fit, because of the work that you and I did together! I did the tests, I don't make mistakes. Well if you didn't make a mistake, then something has happened. Sophie someone must have done something to the results. (CONT'D) I didn't do it Sophie, okay. (CONT'D) Please, look, at least let me in to watch Joe play. I'm so nervous for him. Come on. COMMENTATOR There's a real sense of excitement inside this stadium as the referee gets the football match underway. London Rangers against London United and a win from London Rangers will see them claim their first ever championship. COMMENTATOR (CONT'D) What a big day for the manager, Alex Carter 7

8 COMMENTATOR (CONT'D) It's his son, Paul Carter now, threatening for London Rangers. Jones heads over but a good attempt on goal by Paul Carter, in the side today for Manni, remember. JORGE Did you come all this way just to look at Manni for your squad? Yes, but now this is a total waste of my time! COMMENTATOR Richards now for London United, touched there by Washington, flicked forward. What a calm piece of defending here for Joe Saunders. Gets it off to Gebby. That was calmly done by the man making his debut. COMMENTATOR United on the attack, Afleck with a header, just wide. Alex Carter looking concerned quite noticeably. Jones for Rangers, blocked clear by Norris, only as far as Carter. Oh how they're missing Manni this afternoon. COMMENTATOR Here come Rangers again. Jones is in there, Steve West arriving, and taken out by Ronan. COMMENTATOR Good goalkeeping. For all their attacking, London Rangers just haven t been able to find that one breakthrough to bring them a goal. But here s Linger. Off to Tom Braithweite. Carter s in space! Great tackle there by Norris. Back to Carter again. Goal! The manager s son has scored for London Rangers. What an important goal that could turn out to be if it brings London Rangers the championship. And Paul Carter is the man in focus for London Rangers. OFFICER OFFICER Excuse me. Do you keep tapes of all the recordings you make? Yes we do. I'm looking for a recording of my office - yesterday. Do you have a copy of that tape? One moment. Ollie, can I have a look at the tape from yesterday afternoon, please? 8

9 COMMENTATOR...O Hare for United, through to Miller, who's onside, great chance here for Miller. Can he chuck it in here. Great tackle by Gebby! What an important tackle that was. DOUG DOUG DOUG DOUG That's when I went to training... What are you doing? Checking for something. What? I think the drugs test was spiked. You can't look at these tapes without permission. You must ask the boss first to see if it's OK. Don't be so stupid! Of course I can watch them. Anyway, you shouldn't be in here during a match, it's against the rules! SECURITY OFFICER Doug, back off. I need to look at these tapes, OK! (CONT'D) That's about it... (CONT'D) Paul Carter, gotcha! (TO DOUG) It's you! SECURITY OFFICER Three-four, come in, three-four. COMMENTATOR...deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half now. Norris, there s the half time whistle. And at the break Rangers lead one-nil. The important goal has been scored by Paul Carter who returns to the side today, in place of Manni, and has found the target in this important game. Saunders has had a very 9

10 accomplished opening forty-five minutes. The half time score, London Rangers, one, London United, nil. There's the only goal of the match. I just wonder what the second half has in store now. COACH Come on lads. Let's keep it going. Paul. What? (CONT'D) What, what was that for? That was for trying to ruin Manni's life and my career. What are you talking about? I know you broke into my office and fixed Manni's drugs test, so that you could to play today! The woman's crazy! Would you like to see a video, Paul? (TO THE PLAYERS) Everyone? Have you got time to watch a video? Sophie! This can wait! We're in the middle of a match! No, it can't wait! (CONT'D) Didn't you know we had security cameras, Paul? COMMENTATOR And some remarkable news at half time. Manni, who wasn't even on the substitutes bench at the start of the game, has appeared for the second half, replacing Paul Carter. How the crowd rise to him. Rangers to get the second half under way, with Manni leading the attack. Please, just trust me. You won't be disappointed. COMMENTATOR Manni on the ball here for Rangers. Great tackle there by Norris. He'll be alright in a minute. Come on, Manni! CHARLIE Paul! What are you doing? 12

13 CHARLIE Emma! I have to see Emma! You're wearing your football boots... COMMENTATOR First attack of the second half now for United. Afleck. Great ball in there towards Miller. It might come through to Malloy. One-one! United are level. Martin Malloy s made it one-one. Ashleigh Harrison complains about the defending in front of him as Gebby and Saunders discuss what went wrong. What are you doing here? Come on! We're leaving now! What? We're off, for a holiday, that'd be nice, wouldn't it? Paul, slow down! I can't understand what you're saying! What are you doing here anyway, the match isn't over yet, is it? No. But it is for me. Look, I've got an injury so I'm not playing in the second half. And I just wanted to see you. I want to take you away now, because I love you. Now come on let's go! Terrific skill, great save there by Ashleigh Harrison, and United threatening to score the goal which will bring them the championship. Now here's Manni. Lovely turn by Manni! COMMENTATOR...Lovely goal by Manni! Owww, that's fantastic. Manni has scored for Rangers and could well have brought them the title. He only came on at half time, but he's made such a difference to this team. A team which now hopes to be British champions. COMMENTATOR (CONT'D) This is O'Hare. In towards Miller. Only as far as Norton. Owww, that was so close. United threatening to equalise again now. What a fascinating game. Last minute, corner kick to United. Can Rangers hold out? Comes as far as Norris. Gebby. Thumps the ball up-field. COMMENTATOR (CONT'D) Is that it? It is! Rangers are champions for the first time. Look at their joy. Manni has brought them the championship and the little Latin American has made such an impact since he arrived at the club and he is the hero now of London Rangers. What a sense of achievement there by the 14

15 manager, Alex Carter. He bought Manni in, took a gamble, and it's paid off. (TO ) Congratulations! JORGE JORGE JORGE JORGE JORGE Thank you. Where's Paul? He disappeared. What? I can't believe it! He looked crazy when he ran off. I think I can guess where he is. Where? At the hotel. He'll try and get to Emma. Manni, Manni, I want to congratulate you. Thank you. Okay, I want you to play in my World Cup team. What? I want you to come with me and play in the World Cup. Really? That's fantastic!
