1 Ira Elmore Bishop ( ) The Bishop Family in America Collection, Doc 449 & 450 Introduction This collection contains the research of Ira Elmore Bishop ( ) on the Bishop family in America. It was collected and preserved by Dorothy Hart and given to the Vermont Historical Society through Germaine Cook of Claremont, New Hampshire, in August 1995 (ms. acc. no ). It is housed in two document storage boxes and consumes two linear feet of shelf space. Biographical Notes Ira Elmore Bishop was born on 24 June 1905, to Byron A. and Matilda I. (Nickals) Bishop, at Little Black Township, Taylor County, Wisconsin. By his own account he had only... a common school education. He married Matilda M. Stefanik at an unknown date. As a sailor Ira Bishop traveled the world over. Later, as an ironworker and bridge man, he worked in many parts of the United States. By the early 1960 s medical conditions led to his retirement from such an active, traveling life. After he settled in Homewood, Illinois, his attention turned to genealogy, in which he had begun to take an interest just a few years prior. That interest in his past turned into a passion, and by the early 1970 s he was deeply immersed in collecting and analyzing vital data on all Bishops, who arrived in America prior to 1640, and their descendants. Through his research, Ira Bishop met and corresponded with many descendants of those original Bishops, including Mrs. Dorothy Hart. After Ira s death on February 24, 1979, in Homewood, Illinois, his files relating to the Bishop family in America were transferred to Mrs. Hart. Scope & Content The Dorothy Hart Collection consists of a wide variety of documents and correspondence relating to the Bishop family in America. This collection represents the considerable efforts of Ira Elmore Bishop ( ) to collect, document and organize information relating to all North Americans carrying the Bishop surname. In addition to assembled documents describing the ancestry and/or descendants of specific individuals, the collection contains many family group sheets representing work in progress. Family group sheets and other information for those not yet identified with a known Bishop ancestor were kept separately, as were those Bishops and descendants identified as Shakers. In addition, there is a significant amount of information on related surnames, particularly Gilbert.
2 2 The collection also contains many transcribed vital, church and cemetery records, many of which were from the Sherbrooke, Quebec, area. Of special interest to researchers are correspondence and a number of questionnaires filled in by Bishop family members during the period 1903 to These questionnaires were apparently collected by William Whitney Cone (of Brandsville, Howell County, Missouri) and George A. Root (of the State Historical Society, Topeka, Kansas) and ultimately transferred to Ira Bishop. During the course of his research, Ira Bishop corresponded with a number of other researchers and family members, and produced a newsletter entitled Bishop Families in America. This collection contains some of that correspondence and those newsletters, including a substantial amount of correspondence between Mr. Bishop and Dorothy Margaret (Sanville) Hart of Claremont, N.H., during the period August 1973 to August Arrangement The collection has been rearranged from the state in which it was received, in order to group like items together. Most of the material originally resided in three-ring binders (some in the binders, some loose). The original grouping of materials included the following: Inventory Grouped together in a single binder: Doc 450:1, 9, 16, 23, 28 & 29. Grouped together in a single binder: Doc 450:7, 10, 11 & 30.
