Welcome. WELCOME TO CLIMBING YOUR FAMILY TREE Sponsored by the Sacramento Family Search Library Welcome to our 2017 Seminar! We are pleased with the great presenters we have this year, and hope that their classes will assist you in finding the information you need to fill in your own family tree. The Sacramento Family Search Library was started many years ago by Verl F. Waite in a closet of this church building. He began with a few donated books. Over the years the number of books grew to 21,000! Now, however, we are involved in a major book scanning project in conjunction with Family Search. Our books are being added to the more than 300,000 books that have been put on line. People all over the world can now read and research the majority of these books from the comfort and convenience of their own homes. In addition to the massive amount of research information available on line, our library has many other tools to help our patrons climb their family tree. Our computer desk tops have a portal icon that a patron can click, and then use our paid websites for free. Sites such as Ancestry, My Heritage, Find My Past, Newspaper Archive, and Fold 3 Military Records are available here in the library at no cost to the patron. Sacramento Family Search Library has a training room where we offer about 20 classes each month on a variety of family history subjects. All classes are free. There are also two Kodak Photo scanners that patrons may use for free. Patrons can scan up to 600 photos an hour and then save them on their personal flash drive. This is a great way to preserve, enhance and share your photos before they fade away. They can also be used to create family photo books to share with others. We invite you to let our amazing volunteer staff assist you in your quest. As you climb your own personal family tree, you will begin to see more clearly the panoramic view of your wonderful progenitors. John & Judy Hansen - Directors 1

Genius Bar - This year we are trying something new called The Genius Bar. This will be held in the Library. We are asking all the teachers to come into the Genius Bar and be available to answer patron s questions in their area of expertise. This is meant to be relaxed and informal. We hope you will find it an interesting use of your time. Jeane Berry is a former educator who has been working on her family genealogy for over thirty years. She was inspired by her grandfather, an engineer, who gave copies of his impressive genealogy work to each of his children a few years before he died in the 1960s. Jeane was inspired to expand his work and to prove the pedigree he presented. In the last 10 years, she has been exploring the world of dna for genealogy. She has had her dna and some of her cousins dna tested with all the major dna testing companies, including Ancestry, 23& Me, Family Tree Maker and Living DNA. She is experienced with autosomal results as well as mitochondrial and YDNA results. She started off skeptically, wondering why in the world would anyone want to deal with living test-taker cousins. After all, wasn t genealogy all about our mostly deceased ancestors? However, she has learned the joy and connection that comes with exploring dna matches. She enjoys talking to folks eager to understand their dna results and has been presenting on the topic for the last four years. 9:30-10:25 Chapel - Introduction to Genetic Genealogy DNA + Genealogy = Genetic Genealogy. We all have 23 pairs of chromosomes in the nucleus of our cells. Using DNA from living test takers, you can find cousins who match your DNA to a greater or lesser degree. If your DNA matches, you can seek to find your Most Recent Common Ancestor. (MRCA) Through these relationships, you may find a gold mine of information about YOUR ancestors! 10:30-11:25 Chapel - Working with Your DNA Results Your closet relatives will be your strongest matches. Have the oldest relatives tested as soon as possible. The amount of shared DNA decreases with each generation. Pay attention to how much DNA you share with someone. It will be your key to figuring out your relationship to them. Multiple testing companies and means of contact with other possible family members will be discussed. 5
Kim von Aspern-Parker left the world of journalism (she has a BA in Journalism) and took up chasing dead relatives more than 20 years ago. She has worked as a Dental Assistant, owned her own dance studio and worked in the field of public relations. She is actively pursuing her fourth careet, and her passion, genealogy. Kim now works with clients organizing and verifying existing research, and doing research to uncover new genealogy. An ardent attendee of genealogical conferences and other methods of learning genealogy she hopes to take all that knowledge and parley it into a certification and an accreditation. Recently she has become very busy lecturing and teaching all across the country. 9:30-10:25 Stage Adoption Research (level: All) Adoption Research can be a very emotional undertaking whether you are the adoptee or the parent. If you are working an ancestral adoption (someone long ago was adopted) records can be scarce. Come and find out tips for Researching through Adoption Records. 11:30-12:30 Room: Chapel Finding the Women (level: All) Searching for your female ancestors can be difficult at times. This class will clue you in on some ideas to help you find your elusive female ancestors. Debbie Hutchings has been active in family history from her youth. She has served as a consultant, family history library volunteer, and researcher for many years and is now serving as a Stake Temple and Family History Consultant for the LDS Church. She recently returned from a mission in Salt Lake where she was a trainer for incoming missionaries who would be serving in the Family History Library and other FamilySearch offices. While there, she received training from the FamilySearch developers, managers and directors. Her service included teaching and helping in developing learning modules for FamilySearch curriculum. She also helped in the piloting of the Find-Take-Teach program. She continues to help people regularly implementing the Find-Take- Teach model. Debbie is the mother of 4, grandmother of 10, and lives with her husband in Cameron Park. 9:30 10:25 Relief Society Room - Flying Over Family Search FamilySearch is all about family, dedicated to connecting families across all generations. This class is an overview of what s available for everyone on the website familysearch.org. What s there for you? FamilySearch and Family Tree bring together as many historical records, family groups, and memories as possible and preserve them for current and future generations Come see how to navigate the areas you will find and use in the FamilySearch and 6
Family Tree programs. This class is great for those who have never been on the site or who are just beginning! 10:30 11:25 Room: Library Searching for Records in Family Search "Stop! Are you sure you want to click out of FamilySearch and look elsewhere? Don't give up yet! Your info may be just a couple of clicks away! Too often when searching for records we jump to various websites and programs when we have not completed a comprehensive search in the FamilySearch program. FamilySearch offers thousands of collections, links, and resources that could prove to include the information you are looking for. We'll discuss places and strategies that may help you in your searching of records for your family tree in FamilySearch! Marian Kile started doing genealogy in After a couple of years, she decided that she wanted to also leave a legacy of stories to go with the data. She attended a number of classes and seminars on writing yet she still struggled with creating stories. She found the more she wrote, the easier it became. She has been teaching her method of writing for the last five years. She has written over 200 stories and has self-published three books to share with her family. She credits being a member of a weekly writer s group for giving her the ongoing support needed to improving her writing. 10:30-11:25 Children s Meeting Room Find a Grave How to Create a Memorial Page - This is a commercial website that provides free access to an online database of cemetery and grave from around the world. Many of them include pictures. Marian will show us how to not only search their records, but how to create memorial page for our ancestors. 11:30-12:30 Room 8-9: Writing Family Stories Start with the Right Questions. Learn techniques for interesting writing so our future generations will want to read what we have written. We will discuss the importance of capturing the interest of the reader by formatting, titles, and images. We will learn how to keep the story more engaging through detail, dialogue, and staying focused. These tips will be useful to all levels of writers. This class can help everyone develop the stories that they will be proud to share. Kathryn Miller Marshall, I was the Director of the Lodi Family History Center for 14 years and now serves with FamilySearch on the Wiki Team. She is a frequent speaker at genealogical conferences and workshops. With a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley where she taught for many years, Dr. Marshall developed substance abuse prevention programs for schools on behalf of three National Institutes of Health and various private granting agencies. As a Senior Research Scientist in Bethesda, Maryland, she evaluated the 7
nation's substance abuse programs for annual Congressional reports, and did a humanitarian service mission with Cambodian refugees. Dr. Marshall is a researcher on the Advisory Board of the California Pioneer Heritage Foundation, which provides living history re-enactors at state parks and preserves historical sites in California. In her spare time, Kathy writes early California history books, edits books for historians, and creates replicas of antique maps. 9:30-10:25 Children s Meeting Room - Maritime Migrations/Atlantic Crossings Description of the experience of crossing the Atlantic from the 1600s-1800s and early 1900s, along with some of the best sources for finding your ancestors on the ships that brought them here. 11:30-12:30 Relief Society Room - APPS That Work With FamilySearch A quick tour of high quality third party apps designed to make use of your family tree on FamilySearch.org. Glenda Lloyd teaches genealogy classes through Adult Education. She has participated in local area seminars for many years. She is an active member of ROOT CELLAR and served as their first president. She teaches the workshops at most ROOT CELLAR meetings. She is an outstanding teacher. 11:30-12:30 Room 11/12 I ve Done the Census! Now What? The census is the backbone of American genealogy. It puts each family in a location every ten years, from Location by county and state is important as it leads the researcher to other records. 10 10:30-11:25 Room 11/12 Online Family Trees - Life in The Trees On Line Family Trees allow you to share information easily, set the records straight, and readily access information. Sites such as Ancestry.com trees, Family Search/Family Tree.org and Find My Past are some of programs that will be reviewed in order to assist you in creating your own family tree. MICHAEL WILLIS is an East Bay Area native, Michael s journey in genealogy began at the age of 8 when he memorized seven generations of his maternal line as told to him by his grandmother. Michael has actively researched multiple branches of his tree since 2002 and primarily specializes in Louisiana research. Michael, an IT Analyst with 21 years experience, now resides in Sacramento County, California with his wife and 2 children. 9:30 10:25 Room 8-9 Part 1 Researching the Freedman s Bureau through DiscoveryFreedmen.org The U.S. Bureau pf Refugees. Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, popularly known as the Freedmen s Bureau, was established in 1865 by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the after math of the U.S> Civil War ( ). Some 4 million slaves gained their freedom as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation, which left many communities in ruins and destroyed due to their agriculture based economy. The Freedmen s Bureau provided food, housing, medical aid, schools, and offered legal assistance. It helped former slaves legalize marriages, locate lost relatives, and assisted black veterans. It also attempted to settle former slaves on confiscated or abandoned confederate lands. While the Freedmen s Bureau was ultimately dismantled in 1872 due to lack of government funds and unfortunate corruption on the part of some officials, it left behind an absolute treasure trove of information on the individuals and their family members who were seeking or receiving these services. 10:30 11:25 Room 8/9 Part 2 Mapping the Freedman s Bureau The Freedmen s Bureau is an amazing collection of records available for your research about African Americans who were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation and poor southern whites. Just some of the things available are: multiple southern states records for marriages, registries of school age children, patients listed in hospitals, labor contracts and letters written by concerned family members whose loved ones were still being illegally held as slaves. Many of these records are available on line and Mapping allows you to see which records may be of interest to you. Mapping also allows you to follow links that will help you start your research right away! 9
