Are you a family history bore? Do you despair that your children have no interest in their ancestors? Come to our RootsTech family discovery event and learn how to strengthen your family ties across generations! The Family History Days will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015 from 6:00 pm 9:30 pm and Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 9:30am-3:00pm. There will be presentations, workshops, hands-on activities to help you discover ways to engage even the youngest child in family history. Learn how to light the fires of interest in your offspring, so that they actually ask you questions about their ancestors. Hear encouraging messages from experts in the industry and other popular speakers on this subject. There will be presentations, workshops, displays, opportunities to ask questions to the experts on Family History and Genealogy. The event is free and open to the public ages 12 years old and up so please invite your friends and neighbors to come join us. No childcare is provided. Lunch isn t provided and attendees may bring their own bag lunch. The event will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 8810 Lexington Drive, Colorado Springs, CO on the corner of Lexington and Research Parkway in the Briargate area of Colorado Springs. The purpose of this special event is to help people seek out their ancestors, build your family tree, discover and share your families stories, said Sterling Rogers, event coordinator of this Family History Event. We look forward to helping the attendees discover their past and be able to share it with their children and grandchildren. Obtaining knowledge of past generations blesses future generations. Class topics will include some of the following: STORIES: Capturing and documenting your own story, and interview techniques to record your family s stories. TECHNOLOGY: Furthering family history efforts using the latest and greatest technology available today including social media. FIND & PRESERVE: Researching to gather family records and ways to preserve them for future generations. ORGANIZE & SHARE: Consolidating all family memorabilia and sharing with relatives. Whether you re just starting your family tree, an avid hobbyist, or an experienced researcher, we have something for everyone!

Websites such as FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindmyPast, MyHeritage, & AmericanAncestors are a few of several sites offered. Record my Story room, picture scanning services, microfilm & microfiche research, one-on-one consulting, research specialists, genealogy workshops, seminars weekly, group visits and more! 2) Tree Connect & FamilySearch Sourcing (Skill Level: Beginner) Presenter: Holly Allred Come and learn what to do with all those indexed sources your grandma could never find. Learn how to attach record hints, tag and edit sources, and manage your source box. Understand source menus on a person detail page, and inside the source box. Discover how to search for records outside of record hints and how to attach them to multiple people. Learn what to do with sources found outside of FamilySearch.org records by using Tree Connect to create and attach the source for you. 3) Freedman s Bureau (Skill Level: Beginner) Presenters: Connie Powell & FamilySearch is partnering with African-American organizations in inviting the public to help index records of the Freedmen s Bureau, an agency organized following passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution to assist newly freed slaves in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Between 1862 and 1872, the bureau gathered handwritten documents on freed men, women, and children, including marriage and family information, military service, banking, school, hospital, and property records. Learn how to index these valuable records. 4) Out-of-the-Box Family History: Gifts, Crafts & Décor Galore! (Skill Level: All) Presenter: Debbie Law Take your ancestors out of their storage boxes and bins, dust them off, and give them a second life! Sit back and enjoy over 100 great ideas that will motivate you to repurpose old photos, hand-me-downs, and mementoes into something creative and inspirational that your whole family can enjoy! Topics covered will include: Documenting Sources, Interviewing, Software Programs, Places to look for Information, etc. 2) The Search is On! (Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate) Presenter: Courtney Smith Are you looking for research tips to further your searching? Are you unsure of the best way to perform internet searches and then wonder what to do with all those results? We will discuss how to become more proficient in your searches and find those family history clues! 3) From Kinpoint to the Temple (LDS only) Presenter: Matt Brooks Come see how Kinpoint makes it easy to find and qualify names to take to the temple. Learn how quickly you can find temple opportunities and how Kinpoint points out problems before you even reserve the names.

Included will be discussion of some advance search techniques and latest innovations at Ancestry.com. 2) Family Tree + TreeSeek + Pedigree System (Skill Level: Beginner+) Presenter: Stephanie Moore Are you frustrated with trying to combine your family history digital + hard copies of your family history? Come learn about FamilySearch s Family Tree link, TreeSeek.com pedigrees, & my Fan Chart binder research/organizational system, which is easy to pass down to the next generation. Find sites to create visual family trees for display, which creates easier access to your information. Who doesn t love to see their Family Tree? It s as easy as 1, 2, 3 come join me! 3) How to Engage Your Children in Family History (Skill Level: Beginner+) Presenter: Antony Reynolds Do your children roll their eyes when you mention family history? Based on his experiences with his own father and children, the presenter will share what his wife has taught him about involving the whole family in discovering their ancestors. 4) Adventures in Jewish Genealogy (Skill Level: Beginner Intermediate) Presenter: Jeff Spector In this class, we will explore the uniqueness of doing Jewish Genealogy. We'll cover some of the challenges and myths associated with Jewish genealogy, as well as the sources of information. We uncover some of the special sources of information that makes the work much easier when you know and understand them. To illustrate, I'll share some of my own family history. For beginners and intermediates. 10:10 am-11:00 am: SATURDAY, OCT. 17, 2015 (9:30 am-3 pm) 4 classes per slot; 20 classes offered 1) Family History from a British Perspective (Skill Level: Beginner+) Presenter: Rowan Reynolds "A short presentation on the main records we use in Britain for genealogy. These include the Domesday Book, Manorial Records, Parish Records, Civil Registration and the Census. I will cover historical background, what the records contain, and how to get a hold of them. 4 4) Researching Prussia, Germany and the Lost Eastern Provinces (110 min.: 10:10-noon) - (Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate) Presenter: Mark Rabideau "Do you think you might have ancestors who were Prussian? Are you confused about where to find German records? Have you ever wondered why so many German, Prussian, Polish records seem to be hard to find? If you are new to Prussian/ German research or just stumped for additional clues and resources, this session is designed to provide new sources of hope, inspiration, and information." 2) Photo Restoration with Photoshop Elements (Skill Level: All) Presenter: Betsy Grovenburg Take those damaged but treasured, old old family photographs, and make them look like new! Using an easily available software program, you will see how to make your faded photos bright again, remove the yellowing on black and whites, correct colors, lighten original shadows that hide a persons features, remove distortions due to too bright light, fix surface damage and breaks,, and soften paper crinkles and cracks. Even photos that look like they are beyond repair can be made worthwhile again. This class is to demonstrate what CAN be done, and I promise you will be amazed! 3) CENSUS Research: Getting the most out of the Censuses (Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate) Presenter: Amy I. Anderson Using Census records can be a huge resource in your genealogical research. The key is learning how to analyze and use the information that is in them to assist you in pursuing other repositories. 4) 10 Ways to GET STARTED Climbing Your Family Tree! (Skill Level: Beginner+) Presenter: Debbie Law There are many ways to engage in family history as you set out to discover your ancestors. You will learn 10 great ways to get started! Climbing your family tree can strengthen your family relationships as you preserve memories, stories, and photos, and learn how to put flesh back on the bones of your ancestors. Come and discover these progenitors and the gifts they left for you. Claim your legacy! You will come to understand yourself better as you embark on this remarkable and personal journey. 12:10pm-1:00 pm: 1) Clutter-Free Genealogy: Finding you way through your files (Skill Level: Beginner Intermediate) Presenter: Amy I. Anderson Searching for a way to help you organize your files so that you can find things when you need them. This class is for you whether you are just getting started or have boxes of unorganized documents. 2) "This Land is My Land" (Skill Level: Intermediate) Presenter: Kim Young Many U.S. Land Records describe specific locations using meridians, townships, ranges and sections. Organized grids helped define most towns in America. Finding ancestors and their neighbors through the Public Land Survey System can give clues to researchers as they seek their family members. 3) "It's all about Me! (Skill Level: Beginner+) Presenter: Melanie Kratz

Organizing your timeline, choosing a format, deciding what to include and what to leave out, adding pictures and memorabilia, & even publishing options! 4) Indexing A great way to help people find their Ancestors (Skill Level: Beginner) Presenters: Connie Powell Everyone deserves to be remembered and you can help make this possible. No special skills or time commitments are required. Together, we can help people from around the world find and trace their ancestry for free. This class will not help you with your own family line, but is for anyone interested in transcribing records into searchable indexes for others to search. 1:10 pm-2 pm: 1) It s History! (Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate) Presenter: Stephanie Moore While it s important to follow the paper trail to locate names, dates & places -- I want to bring my ancestors alive! I want to make a historical connection, but who has the time to research? By utilizing FamilySearch s Wiki features, you can find The Red Book, which gives you the U.S. state, county & town s historical information. OurTimelines.com & HistoryLines.com ($) are websites that allows you to print off an automatic timeline & historically accurate time period information for each ancestor. 2) How can Family History bless our Youth? (LDS only) Presenters: Mark with Rebecca & Spencer Lyman Come learn the first steps towards receiving the family history apostolic blessings for our youth. We ll share what our family s been doing & some of our personal experiences involving temple work, journaling & story sharing in FHE, scanning & uploading photos, searching Puzzilla.org & Find-A-Record for additional names needing ordinance work, attending & volunteering the FHDC & much more! 3) Storage Box to Story Book (Skill Level: Beginner) Presenter: Parris Neal We have often been challenged to find a way to convert all of our photos, memories, articles, group sheets, and important documents from our storage boxes into a family history that can be understood, appreciated, added to, and passed along to the next generation. Brother Neal has gone through the experience and will show how he makes that conversion into an Electronic Family-History Scrapbook that can include images of art, hot links, stories, and images of all of the other priceless collectables that will culminate into a real time story book. The steps to create a digital scrapbook will be briefly reviewed including, digital file systems, scanning, camera, photo editing, text manipulation, and final pdf book assembly. 4) Playing in the Sandbox: An Overview of FamilySearch s Tutorials (Skill Level: Beginner) Presenter: Robyn Chapel This class shows you how this educational tool can take you from beginner to advanced in your skills in using FamilySearch. It allows you to experiment and play in the Sandbox account, while helping to avoid timely mistakes. You will learn that you will come to understand all the functions of FamilySearch: navigating your family tree, sourcing, duplications/merging/deleting, relationship problems, photos/memories and how to problem solve issues that may arise in your tree and even more! 2:10 pm-3:00 pm: 1) DNA 101 (Skill Level: Beginner+) Presenter: Sheldon Jones Ever wondered what DNA testing is and how it can help in your Family History? This talk introduces the rapidly growing field of Y-chromosome and Autosomal DNA testing and how the amount of DNA in common between two people estimates their consanguinity. A very personal life-changing in-depth successful biological parent search for an adoptee is also presented along with a discussion of non-paternity events. 2) Memories--Adding Photos, Stories and Documents to your Family Tree will bring your tree to life. (Skill Level: Beginner) Presenters: Nancy Oleksy & Connie Powell
