Genesis 4:25-5:32 Just as Cain s line wandered away from God, we will see that Seth produced a line that would eventually bring salvation to mankind. 2

Genesis 4:25-5:32 Genesis 4:25-5:32 Genesis 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. Genesis 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; (Continued) 3

Genesis 4:25-5:32 2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: 4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. 6 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and 4 begat Enos: (Continued)

Genesis 4:25-5:32 13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. 15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: 16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died. (Continued) 6

Genesis 4:25-5:32 18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: 19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. 21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: (Continued) 7

Genesis 4:25-5:32 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. 25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech. 26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. 28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: (Continued) 8

Pre-Flood Kings [87] Interestingly, there is evidence for the names of 10 pre-flood gods or kings in the records of Egypt and Chaldea. There is a list of 10 patriarchs listed in the pre-flood Biblical account (Gen 5). When the lists are compared, the meaning of some of the names or the tradition of their deeds point to the possibility of the lists being identical: 11

Pre-Flood Kings [87] Biblical Patriarchs Egyptian Gods Chaldean Kings Adam Ptah Alorus Seth Ra Aloparus Enos (mortal, weak mankind) Su Almelon (a man) Cainan (a craftsman) Seb Ammenon (craftsman) Mahalaleel Osirus Amegalarus Jared Set Daonus Enoch (teaching, a teacher) Hor Aedorachus (bearer of divine revelations) Methuselah Tut Amempsinus Lamech Ma Otiartes Noah (survived flood) Hor Xisuthros (survived flood) Are these the same lists? 12

Genesis 4:25 - Seth GEN 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. Seth means appointed or substituted. It s interesting substitute. that Christ is our 13

The Promised Deliverer? Eve s hope was raised again might be the promised deliverer. that this This is a new beginning or new birth. We note that deaths are not recorded for the line of Cain as they would be for the line of Seth, as if they, in all of their production and culture, were of no importance. Righteousness is not from our production, its produced by faith in God. 14

Genesis 4:26 Seth s Son GEN 4:26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. Cain produced a line of human accomplishments (materialism). Cain was of the serpent s seed. Seth produced a line of men calling on the name of the Lord. In the view of some, Seth was maintaining the line of the promised Seed of the woman. 15

The Seed of the Woman In Luke 3:23 we see Mary s genealogy. She was the daughter of Heli. Joseph could only be the son of Heli by his marriage to Mary. For Jesus legal Matthew chapter 1. genealogy (Joseph s) see Luke depicts Jesus genealogy coming through the line of Seth. Jesus was the promised Seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15). 16

The Genealogy LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli 36 Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, 37 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, 38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God. 17

Calling On The Name Of The Lord In Genesis 4:26 - Calling on the name of the Lord may refer to establishing public worship or prayer. Since Calvary, whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. JOE 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. 18

Calling On The Name Of The Lord ACT 2:2121 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. ROM 10:1313 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 19

Calling On The Name Of The Lord Jesus name. is Lord, the name above every PHI 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 20

Calling On The Name Of The Lord Another view of the meaning of to call on the name of the Lord in Genesis 4:26 is as follows: E.W. Bullinger [in the Companion Bible, Appendex No. 21] suggests that this calling on the name of the Lord was to profane and blaspheme it. The Hebrew Targums (Scriptural paraphrases) and commentaries say that in the days of Enosh men began to ere and to profane the name of the Lord. Enosh introduced idolatry. 21

Calling On The Name Of The Lord It is suggested that they began to call the stars and their idols their gods and began to worship them. Maimonides in his commentary on the Mishna says that idolatry began in the days of Enosh. What were men s ungodly deeds, that already existed, that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about? 22

Calling On The Name Of The Lord In Jude 1:1414 we find Enoch s mention of ungodly deeds: JUD 1:1414 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. Even in Seth s godly line corruption existed. 23

Enosh Enosh means moral frailty, (frail, weak, sickly, incurable). 24

The Book 25

Genesis 5:1 The Book GEN 5:1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Book = Written account. This is the history. [71] written account of Adam s This is a clear reference to writing suggesting that the art of writing could have been known within the lifetime of 26 Adam.

The Book The Hebrew word cepher (book) is used signifying that it was indeed a written account and that chapters 2, 3 and 4 may have been a self contained book. This is the second Toledate statement in Genesis indicating that Adam was the owner or writer of the tablet containing 2, 3 and 4 of Genesis. These statements found in Genesis contain the words These are the generations (history) of (toledate) 27

The Book Toledate statements were signatures usually indicating author or owner of a clay tablet. This signature would have been at the end of the tablet. The previous such statement was found in Genesis 2:4, and others are found throughout the book of Genesis, indicating that Moses compiled the book of Genesis from written historical source material, probably clay tablets received from Noah through Abraham. 28

The Book First Adam Genesis 5:1 is the first mention of the word book in the Old Testament and it gives the origins of the first Adam, made of dust. We see a similar statement in Matthew, the first book of the New Testament: MAT 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 29

The Book Last Adam Matthew 1:1 is the first mention of the word book in the new testament and it gives the origins or history of the last Adam, who is the Lord from heaven. 1CO 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven. 30

The Book Inspiration Only in Genesis 5:1 and Matthew 1:1 is the word book mentioned in the Toledate statement, pointing to the first and second Adam. All the other Toledate statements in Genesis state, These are the generations of without mentioning book. This is a significant inspiration. proof of 31

The Book Focus The entire Bible centers around these two books - the book of the generations of Adam, and the book of the generations of Jesus Christ. The entire Bible focuses on the first and last Adam. The first restored. Adam failed, the last Adam For a better understanding of these statements, substitute history for the word generations or genealogy. 32

The Line of Seth 33

Genesis 5:2 - Man GEN 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. Adam and man are the same Hebrew word. In this verse the King James Bible renders it Adam, but it probably should be man or mankind due to the context. 34

Genesis 5:3 - Seth GEN 5:3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth: Adam was created in God s image, but Seth was begot in Adam s own likeness and image. 35

Fallen Nature Seth partook of the fallen nature of his father. ROM 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 36

Fallen Nature This is why Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:7 You must be born again. Adam and Seth were spiritually dead. We are born with Adam s fallen nature. We are descended from Seth. The doctrine of universal depravity is that Noah could pass on to us only what he received from Seth. Seth = substituted or appointed. Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born. 37

Seth = Substituted (or Appointed) Seth = substituted or appointed. 38

The Line of the Woman s Seed Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born. This is not to say that other children were not born before Seth, but God revealed that this one was the true substitute for Abel, who would be in the line of the Seed of the woman, the Messiah. LUK 3:3838 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God. 39

Genesis 5:4-6 - Enosh GEN 5:4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. 6 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: Enosh = Frail, or mortal. According to Maimonides, Commentary on the Mishna, (part of the Talmud), AD 1168: The origin of idolatry began in the days of 40 Enosh.

Genesis 5:7-9 Cainan (Kenan) GEN 5:7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died. 9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: Cainan may actually be Kenan. The genealogy in 1 Chronicles 1:1-4 says Kenan instead of Cainan. 41

1 Chronicles 1:1-4 Notice: 1CH 1:1 Adam, Sheth, Enosh, 2 Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jered, 3 Henoch, Methuselah, Lamech, 4 Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 42

Kenan Means Sorrow? According to a study of the root meaning of the word of Kenan, it may mean sorrow. [Chuck Missler] 43

Genesis 5: Mahalaleel GEN 5:10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: 11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died. 12 And Cainan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel: Mahalaleel = Praise blessed God. of God, or the 44

Genesis 5: Jared GEN 5:13 And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died. 15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared: Jared = Descent, or shall come down. 45

Genesis 5: Enoch GEN 5:16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: 17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died. 18 And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch: Enoch = Dedication, initiation. teaching, or 46

Genesis 5: Methuselah GEN 5:19 And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. 21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: Enoch, whose name means teaching, was the first of four generations of prophets. 47

Enoch First of the Prophets Enoch, the first of the prophets, witnessed to the presence of God. Enoch prophesied when he named his son Methuselah. Methuselah = When he dies, judgement, or his death shall bring. Muth = to die. Shalak = to send forth, or bring about. The year that Flood came. Methuselah died the 48

Enoch First of the Prophets Methuselah witnessed to the patience of God. He lived longer than any other. God withheld His judgment all that time. 49

Enoch First of the Prophets Enoch s second prophecy is found in Jude 14 and 15: JUD 1:1414 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have 50 spoken against him.

Enoch First of the Prophets This prophecy in Jude is considered an amplification of the prophecy in Genesis 3:15 of the crushing of the serpent (Satan) and his seed. 51

Genesis 5: God Took Him GEN 5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Genesis 5:24 is referenced in Hebrews 11:5 where we are told that Enoch was "translated. 52

Hebrews 11:5 HEB 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 53

Genesis 5:24 Translated The word translated is taken from the Latin word translatio, meaning transporting or transferring because Christ will transport the Church from one place to another. [103] Note that it is stated that Enoch did not die. This should settle the argument of some, that the Rapture verses refer to the time of physical death. They do not! Notice that this rapture occurred before the judgment of the Flood, in which a remnant was preserved on an ark. 54

Enoch Walked By Faith Enoch s walk was by faith. HEB 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 55

Enoch Was Raptured In the case of Enoch, he was walking by faith when suddenly faith became sight in another world. 1CO 15:5151 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. Enoch was raptured. 56

Walking With God Walking implies growth or progress. Enoch grew in grace and in knowledge of God. To know God we must have contact with Him, a relationship. 57

Be Prepared For Christ s Return The prophecy of Enoch in naming his son Methuselah, His death shall bring (judgment) would have a sobering effect on Enoch. Every time Methuselah became sick the reminder of judgment would come. We are living in a similar time; we see the signs. We must always be prepared for the 58 return of our Lord for His bride.

Genesis 5:25 - Lemech GEN 5:25 And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech. Lamech = Powerful, conqueror, or the desparing. 59

Genesis 5: Noah GEN 5:26 And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters: 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died. 28 And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son: (Continued) 60

Genesis 5: Noah 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed. Lamech witnessed to the peace of God in the name he gave his son Noah. Noah means Comfort, or rest. 61

The Prophecy of Noah s Name 62

The Prophecy of Noah s Name We find another prophecy, concerning Lamech s son Noah. this one Lamech, like his grandfather Enoch, are the only two antediluvian patriarchs whose prophecies are recorded. They are also the only antediluvian patriarchs who were outlived by their own fathers. Enoch was raptured 435 years father Jared s death. before Methuselah outlived Lamech by 5 years. his 63

The Prophecy of Noah s Name Lamech prophesied at Noah s birth of a coming time when the curse would be removed. This is the time of restoration spoken of by Peter in Acts 3:18-21: ACT 3:18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. (Continued) 64

The Prophecy of Noah s Name 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. 65

The Prophecy of Noah s Name The cursed earth would be cleansed by the flood, the promised Seed was still future, but in Him and His promised coming were true rest and comfort. 66

The Preacher Of Righteousness Noah witnessed to the purposes of God. He was a preacher of righteousness. 2PE 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 67

Righteousness By Faith In God In building the ark he testified generation of the coming judgment. to his HEB 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 68

Genesis 5: Noah s Sons GEN 5:30 And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters: 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died. 32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Noah was the first of the Godly line of Seth to have all his children listed. 69

The Prophecy In The Genealogy 70

The Prophecy In The Genealogy Let s take a closer look now at the genealogy from Adam through the line of Seth to Noah. Look closely at the meaning of the names in this genealogy, courtesy Chuck Missler. 71

The Prophecy In The Genealogy Adam = Man Seth = (is) appointed Enosh = mortal Kenan = sorrow Mahalaleel = the blessed God Jared = shall come down Enoch = teaching Methuselah = his death shall bring Lamech = the despairing Noah = comfort or rest 72

The Prophecy In The Genealogy Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow; the blessed God shall come down teaching his death shall bring, the despairing, comfort, or rest. 73
