3 SUNDAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS December 18, 2016 TROPAR Believers, let us worship and praise in song the Word of God. He is co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Yet he was born of a virgin for our salvation. In the flesh he willingly ascended the cross and suffered death, that he might raise the dead by his glorious resurrection. TROPAR Great deeds are performed with faith. Three youths rejoiced in the flaming furnace as if they stood in refreshing waters; and Daniel the Prophet faced lions as though they were sheep. Through their prayers, O Christ our God, save our souls. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. KONDAK O my Savior, you descended into hell, and you shattered its gates as the Almighty. Together with yourself as the creator you resurrected the dead. You brought to naught the sting of death. Adam has been liberated from the curse, O kind and loving God. And so we all cry out: Save us, O Lord. Now and for ever and ever. Amen. KONDAK O Blessed children three! You refused to worship an idol. Protected by the Infinite Being you gloriously endured an ordeal by fire. Standing in the midst of unbearable flames, you called upon God: Hasten, O gracious Lord, and swiftly come to our aid as a merciful God, for you are able to do whatever you will. PROKIMEN Blest are You, O Lord God of our fathers. Forever praised and glorified is Your Name. Verse: For You are just in all you have done. A reading from St. Paul's Epistle to the Hebrews (11:9-10; 11:17-23;11:32-40) Brethren, by faith Abraham sojourned in the Promised Land as in a foreign country, dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise; for he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose designer and maker is God. By faith, Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac; he who received the promises was ready to sacrifice his only son, of whom it was said, Through Isaac shall your descendants be called. He reasoned that God was able to rise from the dead, and so he received Isaac back as a symbol. By faith Isaac invoked for Jacob and Esau blessings that were still to be. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshipped God, leaning on the head of his staff. By faith Joseph, near the end of his life, spoke of the Exodus of the Israelites, and gave instructions about his burial. By faith, Moses parents hid him for three months after his birth, thereby disregarding the king s edict, because

4 they saw that he was a beautiful child. What more shall I recount? I have no time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, did what was just, obtained promises; they broke the jaws of lions, put out raging fires, escaped the devouring sword; though weak they were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned back foreign invaders. Women received back their dead through resurrection. Others were tortured and would not receive deliverance, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Still others endured mockery, scourging, even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death at sword s point; they went about garbed in the skins of sheep or goats, needy, afflicted, and tormented. The world was not worthy of them. They wandered about on deserts and on mountains; they dwelt in caves and in holes of the earth. Yet despite the fact that all of these were approved because of the faith; they did not obtained what had been promised. God made a better plan, a plan, which included us. Without us, they were not to be made perfect. ALLELUIA- O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us of the works you wrought in their days, in the days of old. Alleluia (3). You have saved us from those who afflict us and those who hate us you put to shame. Alleluia (3). So all the generations from

5 Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. COMMUNION VERSE-Praise the Lord from the heavens:praise Him in the highest. Alleluia (3).Rejoice in the Lord, righteous ones.praise from the upright is fitting Alleluia (3).

Our interior decorators did a great job on the church, while our exterior decorators-featuring our new addition of evergreen trees at the grotto which look great!-did a really nice job on the outside! Not to be forgotten Thank You to everyone who cleans the church for the Holidays and throughout the year! Thank you to our Father Walter who helped set up the Nativity this year! Just to note Joseph, Mary and Jesus will be placed in the nativity on Christmas! If you didn t see it-follow the Star in the East!! PYROHY THANK YOU: A Very Special Thank You to everyone who helped make our pyrohy project a success. Thank you to everyone who pinched, rolled, boiled, packaged, sold, baked/cooked, and cleaned!!! It is you who makes us a success! As a Parish, we really enjoyed the presentation of The Star of Bethlehem this year! Thanks to everyone who baked cookies, donated food or paper goods, and their time which is a very precious commodity during the Holidays to create a very nice Christmas atmosphere for the Parish! It should be noted that the beautiful tablecloths and decorations were donated for use by Gayle Miles, thank you! Thank you to the kitchen crew for the setup/clean-up for the social. Thank You Father Walter for the experience of The Star! Everyone s contribution is Appreciated for the Parish Holiday Experience! It is from our Parish to you! CHRISTMAS PAGENT PRACTICE: There will be practice for Christmas Eve procession on Sunday, December 18 th immediately following Liturgy. SPECIAL PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED: Please keep in your thoughts & prayers Father Nestor Iwasiw, Saints Cyril & Methodius Church(Olyphant), who is in the hospital with a leg infection that has developed into MRSA. 1 Corinthians 13 - Christmas Style If I decorate my house perfectly with lovely plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights, and shiny glass balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals, and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties, and sing in the choir's cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love doesn't envy another home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens. Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of your way. Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can't. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break; pearl necklaces will be lost; golf clubs will rust. But giving the gift of love will endure.

8 LOCAL CHURCH NEWS "NEW DATE - YOU ARE INVITED to join Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish for their 23 rd Annual Christmas Carol Sing Along in the church on North River Street in Wilkes- Barre, Sunday, December 18th, 2016 starting at 2 p.m. Join in the singing of some very sacred, joyful and inspiring Christmas Carols. Afterwards, please join us in the lower church hall for a Christmas Fellowship Social. Please bring a friend or family member, and share the joy of Christmas with them, as we all prepare to welcome the Newborn Son of God into our hearts and homes. CASA of Luzerne County has been sponsored by Barber Ford at the Parade of Trees at the Grotto at Harveys Lake. Each dollar donated counts as a vote so please consider this organization if you attend this event. CASA, which stands for court appointed special advocates, is a volunteer group that works with children and their families as they navigate the child welfare & court systems. Any support is greatly appreciated! (And the pizza is good too!) WYOMING VALLEY BAND CONCERT: The Wyoming Valley Concert Band will present its annual Christmas concert The Magic of Christmas on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen s Episcopal Church, South Franklin Street, Wilkes Barre. The Band is under the direction of Don Williams. There will be traditional holiday favorites, and a special performance of Handel s Messiah. Accompanying the band will be organist Mark Laubach on St. Stephen s pipe organ. Take a break from the hustle and bustle relax and enjoy a great concert. Admission is free, and a light social will follow. MALANKA : Northeastern Pennsylvania s 13th Annual Ukrainian New Year Dinner Dance - MALANKA - will take place from 6:00pm to 11:00pm on Saturday evening, January 14, 2017 at La Buona Vita, 200 Reilly Street, Dunmore, PA. Please note that we are moving from St. Vladimir parish center to a different venue, engaging a popular caterer who has an outstanding reputation and contracting with a different musical group. Basically, we have followed the same format for twelve years and many agree it is time for some changes. The menu will feature both Ukrainian and American fare catered by Kathy Gavin of Stirna s Catering. Music for dancing will be provided by the Ukrainian band Fourth Wave Ensemble of Philadelphia. Cash bar will be available. Wearing Ukrainian attire is encouraged. Tickets $ Reservations are required and can be made by contacting Andrew Jamula at No tickets will be sold at the door. Divine Liturgy is at 4:00pm every Saturday at Scranton s St. Vladimir Church.
