This Week s Readings Epistle: Heb11:9-10, 17-23, Gospel: Mat1:1-25 Sun before Nativity/ Christmas Tone 6 HOLY LITURGY IS AT 9am UNTIL END OF MARCH 2016 FOR THE SUMMER SEASON. Epistle A reading from the epistle of St. Paul to Hebrews (Heb 11, 9-10; 17-23; 32-40) Brothers and Sisters, By faith Abraham sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer up his only son, of whom it was said, "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named." He considered that God was able to raise men even from the dead; hence, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his burial. By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful; and they were not afraid of the king's edict. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets-- who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated-- of whom the world was not worthy-- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Gospel: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matt.1, 1-25) The Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa, and Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of She-alti-el, and She-alti-el the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Page 1

generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

2 Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel" (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. ================================================================================ In these last days before Christmas, we should make a concerted effort to accept that the Mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ is not an extension of our personal accomplishments, good characteristics, or abilities. It is not a reward for good behavior, which is good news because we have all fallen short of holiness in one way or another. It is not about politics or cultural supremacy, which is also good news because we have all become too comfortable with violence, anger, selfishness, and putting our own pleasure and convenience before God and neighbor. Instead, the good news of this season lies in the fulfillment of God s promises to Abraham, now extended to all who have faith in the true Messiah, the One who is anointed to bring light and life to the world, to be the second Adam in Whom our fallen, corrupt humanity is healed and brought into the very life of the Holy Trinity. Though not many people apparently noticed it at the time, God s promises in the Old Testament extended to all who believed, including Gentiles, sinners, and women. The promise was not fulfilled in their lifetimes, however, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us. So, you see, we are part of the family tree also. The line that began with Abraham and is fulfilled in Christ includes us. He is the vine and we are the branches. Surely, we are unworthy and unlikely members of such a family. Like those who prepared for the coming of Christ and those who have served Him since, we are also sinners whose lives are in many ways unworthy. Perhaps that s why the Son of God chose a human heritage full of imperfect people who often fell short; perhaps that s why He was born in circumstances that at least outwardly commanded the respect of no one; perhaps that is why the Old and New Testaments are so honest about the sins of both the Jews and the early Christians. When we look at the Lord s genealogy, we see people a lot like us. For His people are not self-righteous snobs who never did anything wrong. They are not those who have no problems, struggles, and pains. They are not those who think that everything boils down to money, power, reputation, and getting their own way. They are not those who believe that salvation comes through armies, nations, and political leaders. Instead, they are those who fall before Christ with faith, humility, and repentance, and who know that the only hope for blessing, peace, and fulfillment in their lives is in His mercy. In the coming days, let us prepare to celebrate the fulfillment of the Promise made to Abraham in our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. For He comes to make us members of His family, to share His eternal life with us; and He will, if only we will believe, repent, and seek first His Kingdom. The question is, as we begin the countdown for Christmas, will we find room for Christ in our celebration of His birth? Will we find time to come and kneel before the altar and receive Him into our-selves? Will we open the doors of our hearts to receive Christ and all He stands for? Will we give a worthy gift to the Christ-Child? Will we find room for Him in our lives, not only during the Christmas season, but all year through? God grant us all the grace to find time and room for Christ the Lord. May we celebrate this day humbly and simply, with love and devotion, as it was celebrated by God, by the Virgin Mary, by Joseph, by the shepherds, by the angels, by the wise men, on that glorious night long ago. Fr Iraneaus ======================================================================================= On Tuesday the 22nd December 2015 Dorica and Erica Konderewicz celebrated their 60th birthdays. They didn t celebrate with a party that day but came to the usual Church Choir rehearsal where the Church Choir and Vesna presented each of them with a bouquet of flowers, 60th Birthday cards and wished them well. Earlier in the week at their meeting, the Church Council sang Mnohoja Lita to Dorica and Erica. A few days later they were with friends and cut their birthday torte. We thank them for all their hard work in our parish and wish them the very best on the occasion of their 60th birthday. Mnohaja Lita! Page 2
