1 Never-Delivered February Scribe Prompts Larger Edition This Quarter Official Newsletter of The Georgia Genealogical Society Vol. 17, No. 2 ~ April, Tom Lowe to Be Speaker At May Meeting In Rome By Vivian Price By now Georgia Genealogical Society members who normally receive their Scribe newsletter by postal mail probably realize they did not receive their February edition. Those who receive their February Scribe via will notice some content in this edition that they received previously. All readers the April Scribe will notice that this month s edition is larger than usual. There is a reason. Gwinnett Graphics, the official printer for the Georgia Genealogical Society, delivered hundreds of copies of to the post office on Jan. 25. Those newsletters have yet to be delivered. Gwinnett Graphics requested that a trace be put on the newsletters on Feb. 11, but to date no explanation has been provided by the post office. The electronic Scribe was mailed without incident on Jan. 31. Renowned national genealogy lecturer J. Mark Lowe, CG, FUGA, will be the speaker when the Georgia Genealogical Society meets in Rome, Ga. on Saturday, May 1. The meeting will be held at the Rome Branch of the Sara Hightower Regional Library. Lowe s overall topic will be Hidden In Plain Sight Things You Can Get to Easily But Just Don t Think About. From the President Mike Brubaker Cemetery Laws Need Strengthening Here is wishing you all a Happy New Year. I hope the coming twelve months brings you all of the joy and happiness you could wish for. On these pages, I am going to stray a bit from the general topic of genealogy and enter the realm of family history and local history. I am doing this because an African-American cemetery is being threatened in Buckhead (Fulton County). I find it absolutely, intolerably offensive that a developer is comfortable removing grave sites for the sake of development. It is ever more offensive that the county may allow this to happen Mount Olive Cemetery, in Buckhead, is being threatened by developers. The cemetery has long been abandoned. Very few stones or markers designate the spot as a burial ground. The area is more commonly seen as the undeveloped space in front of Frankie Allen Park. Fulton County officials, long ago, mistakenly designated the space as an undeveloped lot and sold the property at auction. Under law, the cemetery should have been designated tax exempt and protected from development. Now, the developer is in court asking for permission to move the identified graves to a public cemetery and build high rise condos. A descendent of one man buried in the cemetery is suing to prevent the removal. The legal argument in this case, in my inexperienced position, comes down to legal gibberish. The developer is arguing that removal would provide greater respect to the individuals buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery, an abandoned space. If the developer wins this legal argument, no resting place, no cemetery, no burial ground in Georgia will be safe from condominiums and other crass development. We obviously need to tighten the laws to protect cemeteries and burial ground in the state of Georgia. I have run into several instances where family cemeteries have been plowed up and become corn fields. It is always unfortunate. The Georgia Legislature has admirable laws in place to protect cemeteries. But, obviously, regardless of the outcome of the Mt. Olive case, the state needs to tighten its laws to protect ALL CEMETERIES from destruction. As the New Year evolves, I would urge you all to follow this court case closely. And at the same time, contact your local legislators, make them aware of this case and urge them to tighten the laws of Georgia so that this case is not repeated in future courts. Not only are cemeteries the final resting place of our kin and the source of information for our research, but they also reflect our cultural attitudes towards death and dying and past generations. We cannot become so callous as to allow the destruction of the permanent homes of members of our communities. We need to protect them all.

5 April, 2010 ~ Page 5 From The Director David W. Carmicheal, Georgia Archives Will you help? How busy are the Georgia Archives and the Capitol Museum? During 2009 we assisted or gave tours to 24,487 people, and we answered 5,310 telephone, mail and requests. That number might have been even higher, but many of our patrons now access our records on the Internet: during 2009, visitors to our Web site looked at 9,676,461 pages! The staff at the Archives and Capitol Museum are hard-pressed to serve so many people. In this past year we have seen an increase in the number of volunteers who assist us, and we would love for you to consider joining that team of volunteers. You can do that in three ways: Many of our visitors are interested in family history and genealogy but have little idea where to start or how to use Georgia resources. Family history volunteers assist patrons in the Archives Reference Room by helping them locate resources in the Archives library collection or in our databases, assisting them with the use of microfilm readers and printers, and giving general guidance about genealogical research. General volunteers may choose to work at either the Georgia Archives in Morrow or at the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta. Those volunteering in Morrow may assist with public programs, help patrons in the Reference Room, work on conservation projects and more. Volunteers at the Georgia Capitol may give tours to visitors, school groups and adult groups or staff the Welcome Desk to greet the many people who visit the capitol. And finally, Home-based volunteers can work from home to index records or transcribe historic documents. The indexes and transcriptions are made available to researchers via the Internet. You have what it takes to help us deliver the very best service. Will you consider volunteering? For more information, visit htm. Got A Minute? The Georgia Genealogical Society is looking for a few good volunteers: Officers and Directors -- In the coming months, GGS will form a Nominating Committee to present a slate of officers for the term. Elections will be held at the October, 2010 meeting. Books Coordinator -- Responsible for selling books at meetings and filling book orders. Hospitality Coordinator -- Responsible for working with the Program Director to provide coffee and snacks during quarterly meetings. Vivian Price Helpful Books Available At GGS Meetings The Georgia Genealogical Society has books for sale at every quarterly meeting. Here Emma Davis Hamilton, right, checks out the selection, aided by GGS President Mike Brubaker and Recording Secretary Sarah Rondeau. Among the titles available are Georgia Research: a Handbook for Genealogists, Historians, Archivists, Lawyers, Librarians, and Other Researchers; Abstracts of Georgia Land Plat Books A & B ; and Wilkes County, Georgia, Tax Records, GGS members receive a discount on book prices. Anyone interested in the above positions should contact Mike Brubaker at rmbrubaker@att.net. Writers for the GGS Quarterly -- Responsible for contributing articles to the quarterly magazine. Vivian Price Awards Presented at 2009 Holiday Luncheon A much-anticipated feature of the December meeting of the Georgia Genealogical Society is the presentation of three annual awards. The 2009 awards went to three deserving individuals: Beth Moye received the Volunteer Award in recognition of her work as Book Review Editor of the GGS Quarterly. Ken Brantley received the award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Genealogy for his work preserving historic Georgia county records and making them available to researchers through his many books, as well as his ground-breaking efforts to digitize documents and publishing them on the Internet. Brantley has spearheaded the digitization and publication of Cobb County records, which are online at cobb_project/cobb_project_list.htm. The site includes information on other similar projects, as well as an address for anyone wishing to help with indexing. Laura Carter of Athens received the Elizabeth Haulbrook Taylor Award for her work as program director of the Georgia Genealogical Society, as well as for her enthusiastic efforts to promote genealogy throughout the state. The Elizabeth Haulbrook Taylor Award is given annually by the Georgia Genealogical Society to the GGS member who has donated the most volunteer time to GGS projects and who is not a current member of the GGS Board. Elizabeth Haulbrook Taylor ( ), for whom the award is named, was a generous genealogist who shared her large collection of research materials with anyone she could help. An Alpharetta resident, she held several offices on the board of the Georgia Genealogical Society. Born in Irwin County, Jean Elizabeth Haulbrook was the daughter of Hugh Lawson Haulbrook and Myrtice Elizabeth Branch of Ocilla. Her husband, Hardy Samuel Taylor, to whom she was married for 51 years, died in She is survived by three children and several grandchildren; she was preceded in death by one son. Ms. Taylor was described as a gracious, kind and lovely person by her friend, Jacquelyn Cannon of Dunwoody, who sponsors the award. QUERIES Gov. Mark Lowe, is a full-time professional genealogist, author and teacher, who researches primarily in Scribe Continued from Page 1 The registration deadline for registration for the March 5 seminar was Feb. 27. With the deadline approaching, registrations were lagging far behind their usual pace. The delivery failure left GGS scrambling to provide information on the March program for its members who did not receive the newsletter. With the generous help of the kind folks at Gwinnett Graphics, GGS was able to send a postcard invitation to members to hear Thomas W. Jones. Layouts for the postcard were delivered to the printer on Feb. 18. Printing, labeling and affixing postage (first class) was accomplished the next day. Just two days later members were reporting having received their cards. Judging from the spike in program registrations following the postcard, there was no repeat of delivery malfunction. The program was quite well attended. Because only the subscribers received the February edition, the GGS board decided to increase the Rome Branch of the Sara Hightower Regional Library original records and manuscripts throughout the South. Lowe has published articles in APGQ, North Carolina Genealogical Society Quarterly, SPEAK!, The Longhunter and other society publications. His weekly local history article appears in the Robertson County[Tenn.] Times. He is the director of the Regional In-depth Genealogical Studies Alliance (RIGS Alliance) a week-long hands-on research session focusing on original documents and manuscripts, held in cooperation with the National Archives. He is also an instructor at the Institute for Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy. Lowe is a former officer and board member for the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), past president of the Association of Professional Genealogists, a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association and was awarded the APG s Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award in number of pages in the April Scribe. Only electronic subscribers will notice some duplicate content. Hopefully, the February calamity never will be repeated. The editor s thanks go to Gwinnett Graphics and the GGS board, who acted quickly and efficiently, and the GGS membership, who responded just as quickly to send in their registrations. 9 April, 2010 ~ Page 9 When in Rome... Visit the Between the Rivers Historic District, Myrtle Hill Cemetery and More Those who plan to attend the Georgia Genealogical Society seminar in Rome are encourage to spend a long weekend enjoying this historic north Georgia town. Rome is steeped in history and nestled among three rivers and seven hills. Founded in 1835, the city s center is located at the confluence of the Coosa, Oostanaula and Etowah rivers. The city of seven hills Jackson, Lumpkin, Blossom, Old Shorter, Clock Tower, Myrtle and Mount Aventine was named after Rome, Italy because the Georgia city s topography resembles that of ancient Rome. Although Gen. Sherman s soldiers destroyed most of the city, it was reborn after the Civil War, becoming the finest Victorian city center in Georgia. The heart of the city center is known as the Between the Rivers Historic District. Broad Street is the second widest main street in the state. According to the Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, the trees, which once lined the middle of Broad Street to provide shade for the horses, were put back during the Streetscape Project in the 1980s. Many of the facades of downtown are being restored. To appreciate the beauty of Broad Street, look up to see the tops of the buildings, the spires, the gargoyles and other adornments that make this street unique. The library, where the GGS meeting will be held, is just north of the Between the Rivers Historic District. Sidewalks make a tour of the district an easy walk. The district includes many stately old homes, churches and government buildings. Highlights of the district include: The Visitors Center, 402 Civic Center Drive, is housed in a 1901 train depot with an attached caboose. Brochures are available at the center. More information is available from the Web site or by phone, either 706/ or 800/ Before visit- Between the Rivers Historic District has many inviting cafes. ing the city s attractions, check on hours of operation. Many of the buildings are closed on Sundays. Some have admission fees. The statue of the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus, a replica of the original, was a gift to Georgia s Rome from Rome Italy in It is located outside city hall. Myrtle Hill Cemetery, established in 1857, is located on one of Rome s seven hills and is known for scenic views of the city and picturesque markers and monuments. Among those buried there are Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of President Woodrow Wilson; 300 Confederate and Union soldiers; and Capt. Thomas Berry and Frances Rhea Berry, parents of Berry College founder Martha McChesney Berry. Highlights of the Please see ROME, Page 11 Two views of downtown Rome. 11 April, 2010 ~ Page 11 Rome Continued from Page 9 cemetery include Veteran s Plaza, with a bronze replica of a World War I Doughboy; and the Women of the Confederacy Monument. The Cotton Block is Rome s most intact historic block, where most of Rome s wealth was generated in the 1800s. Of note is Broad Street itself. Broad, from the Cotton Block to Fifth Avenue, was raised approximately 15 feet in the late 19th Century because of flooding. The historic Clock Tower (see photo on Page 3) is situated on another of the seven hills. The tower dates to 1871 and was originally the city s water reservoir. The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places and now houses a museum depicting Rome s history. The Rome Area History Museum is located on Broad Street. Permanent exhibits create a walk through time starting with the Native Americans and early settlers, through the Civil War, and then the development of Rome s culture, life-ways, and industries. Original documents such as maps, blueprints, photos, personal letters and business records provide primary sources that paint a picture of Rome s history. The archives house photographs, books and manuscripts pertaining to Northwest Georgia. Outside the Historic District are still more treasures. Oak Hill, built circa 1847, was the home of Martha Berry. The estate and gardens are adjacent to the Martha Berry Museum near the Berry College campus. Tours of the beautiful Berry College campus begin at the museum. The campus contains five gardens, in addition to two nature trails and Martha Berry s Walkway of Life. The Walkway of Life is a portion of the path Miss Berry once walked. Markers line with walkway with some of her favorite sayings. Also of note is the cabin constructed circa 1873 as a playhouse of the Berry children. It is known as the birthplace of Berry College, where Martha Berry first had visions of educating the head, the heart and the hands. Although Oak Hill and the museum are closed on Sunday, the Berry campus is open for those wish to drive through and enjoy the campus. With 28,000 acres, Berry is the world s largest college campus. The Chieftans Museum and Major Ridge Home is located at 501 Riverside Pkwy. The circa 1790 home of Cherokee Indian leader Major Ridge is a national historic landmark and a site on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. For those who might wish to extend their visit even further, the quaint village of Cave Spring beckons 16 miles southwest of Rome on U. S. 411S. The town includes 90 structures and sites on the National Register of Historic Places. Highlights include the Georgia School for the Deaf, a 1.5 acre lake in the shape of Georgia, the town s signature cave and spring and antique and gift shops.
