1 Chapter 1 : United States Federal Census The Seventh Census of the United States: Embracing a statistical view of each of the States and Territories, arranged by counties, towns, etc., under the following divisions with an introduction, embracing the aggregate tables for the United States compared with every previous census since â schedules and laws of Congress relating to the census in the same periodâ ratio. Images reproduced by FamilySearch. In addition, the names of those listed on the population schedule are linked to the actual images of the Federal Census, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration microfilm, M, rolls. If you do not initially find the name on the page that you are linked to, try a few pages forward or backward, as sometimes different pages had the same page number. For the first time in the history of the United States census, enumerators of the census were instructed to record the names of every person in the household. Added to this, enumerators were presented with printed instructions, which account for the greater degree of accuracy compared with earlier censuses. Enumerators were asked to include the following categories in the census: No relationships were shown between members of a household. The categories allowed Congress to determine persons residing in the United States for collection of taxes and the appropriation of seats in the House of Representatives. Few, if any, records reveal as many details about individuals and families as do the U. The population schedules are successive "snapshots" of Americans that depict where and how they were living at particular periods in the past. Because of this, the census is often the best starting point for genealogical research after home sources have been exhausted. The Census includes the following states and territories: The United States was the first country to call for a regularly held census. The Constitution required that a census of all "Persons The first nine censuses from to were organized under the United States Federal Court system. Each district was assigned a U. Governors were responsible for enumeration in territories. The official enumeration day of the census was 1 June All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. By, there were a total of thirty-one states in the Union, with Florida, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin, and California being the latest editions. There were no substantial state- or district-wide losses. 2 Chapter 2 : U.S. Federal Census - Slave Schedules Population schedules of the seventh census of the United States,, Massachusetts [microform]. In addition, the names of those listed on the population schedule are linked to the actual images of the Federal Census, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration microfilm, M, rolls. Unique Features of the Census Detailed and Protected Data was the first year that each of the census enumerators was given the same set of printed instructions. The instructions explained the reason for asking each question on the census, which eliminated a lot of the confusion and non-uniform answers between states and territories. The information was better protected and preserved because it required three copies of the information, each to be sent to a different place. Birthplaces Birthplaces were included in, allowing family migration routes to be officially tracked for the first time in US history. The result is that the census is one of the most valuable resources for genealogists. Very few states recorded birth and death records officially back in However, there were privately kept records, such as those kept by religious institutions. It is possible to use information in the census in order to locate other records that may have relevant records and facts. Slave Information The slave listings in the census were also more detailed than the listings in previous censuses. For example, the census has listings for manumitted slaves slaves who were released and became free. The names of the slaves were not listed, but their sexes, ages and mental and physical health characteristics were listed. Interesting facts about the census Millard Fillmore is President during the census. The census was the first in which free persons were listed individually and the first census with separate questionnaires about slaves. April 4, â City of Los Angeles incorporated. April 15, â City of San Francisco incorporated. Junes 6, â Levi Strauss makes his first pair of blue jeans. September 8, â Fugitive Slave Act was passed ordering escaped slaves captured in free states be returned to their masters. February 28, â The Republican Party was founded. March 23, â First Elevator is installed by Elisha Ottis. States Covered in the Census Census Map As the country grew, the number of states and territories covered increased. If you are using the census to do genealogy research, you will have access to information covering 36 different areas. The Census recorded information from 31 states and 4 territories. What was lost from the U. The census was the first to not experience any major loss of records. Page 2

Bureau of the Census; 3 editions; First published in ; Subjects: Census,, Population. Economy[ edit ] The United States Census collected a great amount of data that gave insight into the state of the U. Some of the data revealed the growth of the economy with regards to agricultural and manufactured production, international trade, federal debt, taxation, transportation, education, and land expansion. Agricultural Production This census calculated the total land by state in square miles, the total production of major goods and livestock per state in respective units, the total value of each good produced, the total number of plantations per state, and various other statistics. The total agricultural production between in was calculated at about 1. Manufactured Production This census included the total manufactured production in dollars, the total amount of capital invested, the total value of wages paid, the percent of profit by state and total, the profit by state of major industries cotton, wool, various iron work, breweries, fishing, salt, and other less significant statistics. Total manufactured production was valued at just over one billion dollars. This is a great increase over the totals estimated in and International Trade The census contains the total value of imports and exports by state, statistics and names of the major imports and exports, the total values of shipping by state, and the value of imports and exports with various individual countries. The United States traded most with the United Kingdom. The imports and exports with the United Kingdom were both valued around million dollars. Federal Debt This census contains yearly federal debt totals, total federal revenues, and total expenditures from to The total debt of the United States on July 1,, was roughly Taxation The census contains some calculation of total annual federal taxes, but it is incomplete. It does however, give state taxation totals. Transportation and Communication This census calculates the total cost, size, and quantity of railroads and canals. The funded debt for railroads and canals in was million. Their gross earnings were more than 38 million dollars. This census also contains estimates for growth in mileage of telegraphic lines in the United States. Education This census displays the advances of the United States in education and literacy by documenting the number of libraries, the number of schools public, private, and colleges, state literacy rates, the total newspaper production and consumption, the educational levels of differing races, the total value of tuition costs, the amount of federal land given for education, and other various statistics. Land Expansion The census shows the great amount of territorial expansion that took place in the United States, following the Admission of Texas, the Oregon Treaty, and the Treaty with Mexico. These three pieces of land totaled an addition of more than a million square miles to the nation. It is much more detailed and provides more information than the census. This census was during a very important period of growth and innovation in the United State, the Industrial Revolution. The statistics in this census provide data on the rate of growth that was taking place in, that would lead to the emergence of the United States as an economic world power. Many of the statistics were compared to those of Great Britain and other world powers. This shows where the United States stood economically relative to the rest of the world. Page 3

June 1, Census States: Unlike previous censuses, which took several months, it was to be completed within thirty days. With one month to complete the census, less people were missed as in prior census periods. There were two copies of every census schedule. The original copy was to be bound by county and located in the county courthouse. The copy was to be sent to Bureau of Census in Washington D. Click to View Sample from US Census of Clark County, IN The census asked similar questions to those asked in previous censuses, including name, sex, age, marital status, occupation and birthplaces of both the person in question and their parents. Illnesses and physical and mental disabilities were also listed in the census. The census reported whether an individual was blind, deaf, dumb, idiotic, insane, maimed, or crippled. Urban households were recorded in a more accurate way in the census. Both the street numbers and the house numbers were recorded. This is the first census to use Indian as a race. Indian families may appear in the general population census. Make sure you also check the special Indian schedules. There were also some special Native American schedules that were taken during the census. Schedule 1 â Population: Schedule 3 â Agriculture: Schedule 4 â Social Statistics: The majority of the data came from correspondence with officials of institutions providing care and treatment of certain members of the population. In addition, the names of those listed on the population schedule are linked to the actual images of the Federal Census, copied from the National Archives and Records. Federal Census - Slave Schedules [database on-line]. United States of America, Bureau of the Census. Seventh Census of the United States, National Archives and Records Administration, In addition, the names of those listed on the slave schedule are linked to the actual images of the Federal Census, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration microfilm, M, rolls. If you do not initially find the name on the page that you are linked to, try a few pages forward or backward, as sometimes different pages had the same page number. Slaves were enumerated separately during the and censuses, though, unfortunately, most schedules do not provide personal names. In most cases, individuals were not named but were simply numbered and can be distinguished only by age, sex, and color; the names of owners are recorded. However, some enumerators listed the given names of slaves, particularly those over one hundred years of age. These names are generally found in the "name of slave owners" column. Other questions asked include whether a fugitive from the state meaning if the slave had fled and not returned ; number manumitted or freed ; and whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic. Sometimes the listings for large slaveholdings appear to take the form of family groupings, but in most cases slaves are listed from eldest to youngest with no apparent effort to portray family structure. In any event, the slave schedules themselves almost never provide conclusive evidence for the presence of a specific slave in the household or plantation of a particular slaveholder. At best, a census slave schedule can provide supporting evidence for a hypothesis derived from other sources. The slave schedule is especially useful for researchers who are seeking information about their slaveholding ancestors. This is because of the specific information it provides about their holdings and other information you can draw from it. For example, the number of slaves enumerated under an owner could help you determine if he had a plantation or not, and if so, what size it was. The slave schedule was used in the following states: The United States was the first country to call for a regularly held census. The Constitution required that a census of all "Persons The first nine censuses from to were organized under the United States Federal Court system. Each district was assigned a U.
