1 YVGS FAMILY FINDERS Established 1982 YUCAIPA VALLEY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY P.O. BOX 32, YUCAIPA, CA Sponsored by The Yucaipa Branch Library December 2012 VOLUME 30 NO. 12 President s Message: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and the best of the holidays to all. There are several things that I would like to bring to you as we close Some of these items will have more detail in the newsletter but let me recap them here. We are continuing our tradition of the December meeting being a Christmas potluck. This year it will be at the Yucaipa Branch Library, our regular meeting place on December 8, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. In honor of the release of the 1940 Census this year our Christmas party will have a 1940 s flavor. If you can, dress with a hint to 1940 s fashion and music will be of the 1940 s Christmas sounds. If you have any family pictures taken around 1940 that you would like to share with everyone, please bring them. I look forward to the table decoration that some of you indicated that you would bring. If any others would like to bring something to decorate a table we will be using some round and some long tables, we could use the loan of a few more centerpieces. I look forward to good food, sharing family Christmas stories, music and a great time to visit with each other. All is not fun and games so we will take some time on December 8 for the election of officers for 2013 and Jamie is planning an instillation of officers. At the January meeting we will hold an auction of a large selection of books. This should be fun as well as raise a little money for the society. All books that are not sold that day at auction will be donated to various libraries in the area that have shown an interest in adding them to their collections. The list of speakers for 2013 is almost full and we have some great guests that will be coming to share with us. Look forward to a listing in the January newsletter. Floyd K. Ferguson President, YVGS

Saturday January 12, 2013 Yucaipa Valley Genealogical Society Meeting at Yucaipa Branch Library, th Street in Yucaipa. 12:00 P.M. Workshop 1:00 P.M. Meeting Speakers: Homer and Linda Spears Topic: Patrick Henry and Betsy Ross Come join us. And bring a friend! Telling our Stories Editor's note: This is the last of the series featuring the Olive Tree Genealogy Blog by Lorine McGinnis Shultz. Please continue to work on your own stories. You may not think you have stories to tell; not only do you have some, the people around you have memories to share as well. Lorine's memories for this month: "The prompt for this week is your first house. I don't mean the first house you remember as a child. I'm talking about the first house you bought as an adult. Do you remember it? Describe it. Tell your descendants what it was like. I find myself fascinated by the 1911 census for the UK (England) which provides number of rooms in the house and specifies what to include or exclude. The houses in general were so small compared to ours, and of course we don't generally have a summer kitchen and other rooms that were commonplace in If you remember what your first house cost and the year you bought it, talk about that too. Maybe your moving experience is something you can share on paper. My very first house was purchased circa 1970 when my ex-husband and I left the city (Toronto) to

3 move north. There were two houses for sale in the entire town! So it wasn't like we were buying our dream home. We simply chose the only one that was a detached home. The other one for sale was a semi-detached on a main street..." Editor's note: What was your first Christmas in your first house like? Did you make your own decorations as we did? A friend brought us a little tree from his family's farm, and my husband made origami birds that we hung from the end of the branches with string, and I used dried safflowers (they are red) on the branches to fill it in. We had one silver ornament--a star--and it was tied to the top of the tree. We were in college and couldn't afford any other decorations...that is still my favorite tree. I wish I could duplicate it. Thank you Sandy Makovsky and Juanita Marshall for the wonderful goodies at the November meeting. I hope to see everyone at the Christmas Potluck at the library. Please bring a dish to share. Sue Wolfe, Hospitality Over the course of the millennia, all these ancestors in your tree, generation upon generation, have come down to this moment in time to give birth to you. There has never been, nor will ever be, another like you. You have been given a tremendous responsibility. You carry the hopes and dreams of all those who have gone before. Hopes and dreams for a better world. What will you do with your time on this Earth? How will you contribute to the ongoing story of humankind? ~Laurence Overmire (from lecture, The Quest for Your Ancestral Home) Family History Center Located at 5 th and Wabash in Redlands Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday 6:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. FHC Telephone Number: A Checklist of 150 Genealogical Sources by William Dollarhide Filed in Church Records, Dollarhide Columns, Newspaper Research, School Records, U.S. Census, Vital Records on Nov.26, 2012 That first pedigree chart usually shows up to four generations, sometimes more, but if a 4-generation chart starts with yourself, there are up to fourteen direct ancestors presented. How many documents have you collected for each of those fourteen persons? How many have of you collected for yourself? How much of the information is still in your head and never written down? For each ancestor on your pedigree chart, it is possible to have at least 150 documents that mention one person. By adding the first person on the chart, that means it is possible to have 2,250 different documents for one 4-generation pedigree chart. How could that be possible? It is possible because we live in a society that keeps records of everything we do from birth to death, and a myriad of events in between. Here are some things you can do to fill out what you know about yourself, your parents, your grandparents, and your great-grandparents. This list is where you may find dates, places, and genealogical events of a person s life. Now is the time to honor your parents, grandparents, and greatgrandparents by locating every piece of evidence of their lives and saving it as a written record of their personal history. There will be many readers who will have discovered a document not on this list please send a comment so others can learn. This list of sources gets smaller as we go back further in time. Assume that it is possible to find all of the 150 documents mentioning any ancestor born since 1930 or so. Here is the checklist: Personal/Home Sources Family Bibles, Oral Histories, Family Histories, Baby Books, Baby Announcements, Wedding Announcements, Wedding Guest Books, Diaries and Journals, Income Tax Forms, Property Tax Receipts, Family Correspondence, Funeral Records, Programs, etc., Death Announcements, Scrapbooks, Photo Albums, Credit Statements, Discharge Papers, Draft Cards, Military Awards, Social Security Cards, Magazine Subscriptions, First Papers Citizenship, Naturalization Papers, Employment Papers, Union Cards, Newspaper Clippings, Probate/Estate Records, Wills, Land Deeds, Drivers Licenses, Motor Vehicle Registrations, Proof of Insurance Cards, Adoption Record, Baptism Record, Confirmation Record, Graduation Record, Diploma,

5 Slate of Officers for 2013 President: Floyd Ferguson Co Vice Presidents: Terry Brown and Jamie Daniel Secretary: Betty Marcum Treasurer: Billie Wilkes Please Join us on December 8 to vote for this slate, and for their installation. Genealogy Tip of the Day--In One Place Only There are still records that exist only in their original form. They have not been transcribed. They have not been microfilmed. They have not been digitized. Local records frequently fall into this category of being available "only in the original location," but there are others as well. While it is realized that not everyone can travel to remote places to perform research, at least be aware that there may be more material out there. When Santa Claus Comes A good time is coming, I wish it were here, The very best time in the whole of the year; I'm counting each day on my fingers and thumbs -- the weeks that must pass before Santa Claus comes. Then when the first snowflakes begin to come down, And the wind whistles sharp and the branches are brown, I'll not mind the cold, though my fingers it numbs, For it brings the time nearer when Santa Claus comes. --Author Unknown
