1 THE BRITISH NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE ONE PLACE, MILLIONS OF STORIES... THE BRITISH LIBRARY DIGITISES 40 MILLION PAGES OF OLD NEWSPAPERS FROM UK AND IRELAND The British Library and brightsolid launched the first 4 million pages of the Library s digitised newspaper collection in late Spanning three centuries of local, regional and national news, the new digital archive can be viewed at www. britishnewspaperarchive. co.uk. Representing the first phase in the 10-year project, these 4 million pages were digitised with the Library s partners, brightsolid the company behind family history websites such as findmypast.co.uk. The new website lets visitors search the archive using keywords. As every story in the collection has been indexed including family notices, announcements and advertisements the archive is an excellent resource for family historians. New pages will be scanned READ ALL ABOUT IT! and added to the website on a constant basis over the next ten years, until the target of 40 million pages is reached. We are initially aiming the collection at family historians, with at least one newspaper title covering each county in the UK, plus one or two national 19th Century papers, says Tim Martin, brightsolid s Managing Director. You can sign up online to receive our newsletter for details of what s coming. Website visitors are also able to suggest what they want to see. You can search the website by historical event, name, date or county, with high quality images of the original newspaper available on the search results page. The search facility was specially designed for genealogists, providing relevant details not available on certificates or other family history documents per cent of the [British Newspaper Library] collection is unused. We will open up papers that have never been seen, says Patrick Fleming, Head of Reader and Reference Services at the British Library. A lot of visitors to Colindale don t know what they re looking for and spend weeks here. Searching them online will change all that. BNA Newspaper vƒ.indd 1 13/2/12 21:09:56
2 THE EDITORIAL VIEW From birth notices to stories about ancestors eloping, old newspapers can add fine detail to your family history research Old newspapers provide a rich resource for family historians. In addition to the usual names, dates and places, historical newspapers can offer us an insight into character, thereby allowing researchers to flesh out some of the fine details of their ancestors lives. That said, the family notices are always the best place to start your search from. By the middle of the 19th Century, you re apt to find that the birth, marriage and death notices in newspapers contain more ordinary people. Jumping forward 50 years, 20th Century notices usually include the mother s maiden name, and emigrants often placed family notices in the newspapers of their old hometown. The details contained in newspapers will subsequently help you to search for registrations of births and baptism in began to appear in newspapers thus giving you a sense of the change in fashions. From reading these marriage reports, you can then search marriage regparish records. In some cases, there are even newspaper stories on christenings, including the names of people who attended the ceremony. From the 20th Century onwards, wedding photographs By the middle of the 19th Century, you re apt to find that the birth, marriage and death notices in newspapers include more ordinary people. isters in church records for further details about the marriage. If you know that a marriage settlement was also set up, you can then search for this in legal records. Later newspapers are also worth checking, since they might contain information on any lists of guests and gifts. Death notices in newspapers varied in column inches according to the status of the deceased. The deaths of British people abroad were also usually included in newspapers, particularly if the men served in the armed forces. The death notices in 20th Century newspapers can also offer you details about the whereabouts of the grave - or the location of where the cremation took place. To obtain further details, you can then contact the cemetery or crematorium. Should the death certificate of your ancestor reveal that there was an inquest, it will usually include the date this took place, as well as the coroner s name and his area of BNA Newspaper vƒ.indd 2 13/2/12 21:10:09
3 NEW FEATURES ON THE BRITISH NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE WEBSITE Our development team has been working hard to add extra features to the new website. Search Term Highlighting One of these new features is highlighting the first 10 occurrences of the words in your search term, within the article. So, for example, if your search is Charge of the Light Brigade, the words Charge, Light and Brigade will be highlighted in light blue (small words like the and a are not included), thereby helping you to read the relevant section of the newspaper article more quickly. Viewer Minimap Another new feature on the site is the Viewer Minimap. Next time you view a page, check out the expandable box in the bottom right-hand corner called Where am I? If you click this, you ll see where you are on the newspaper page within the viewer. So if you ever lose your bearings when viewing a large page, this is a great tool for quickly getting an idea of where you are on the page. In short, you could describe this feature as being an interactive You are here map. We re always looking for ways to improve the website and plan to add more features in the near future. jurisdiction. With these details, you can then search for any specifics about the perplexing death of your ancestor. As coroner s inquest records are not available till 75 years after the event (and some records do not even survive), old newspapers provide a rich resource in this search area. Crime and Punishment Just like today, crime reports helped to sell old newspapers. Most papers had a regular column that reported on court cases, including the personal details of the people who appeared in court. In this era of the Bloody Code, the reports on the Assizes frequently provided detailed descriptions of the crimes, especially for the more serious crimes. If you succeed in finding the date of the trial, you could then look for the lists of prisoners using the criminal registers held at the National Archives in some cases, you might even be able to find the mugshot! Many libraries and archive offices hold microfilm copies of local and national newspapers that can help you with your search. With the British Library and brightsolid now working in partnership to digitise 40 million pages from UK and Irish newspapers over the next decade, this new online resource provides you with an excellent opportunity to find out more about your ancestors. 4 THE LAUNCH OF THE BRITISH NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE The launch of the British Newspaper Archive website represents the arrival of a wonderful new resource for history researchers. The 4 million pages that have just been published as part of the first stage of the project are especially useful for family historians. It may be possible that you can find details about your ancestors in newspaper stories, highlighting their involvement in an important historical event. You can also search for your forebears in the business advertisements, accident reports and family notices. To give their lives context, you can also read the news stories that influenced their lives. Trace your ancestors using the online newspaper archive BNA Newspaper vƒ.indd 4 13/2/12 21:10:52
5 Death This report offers more detail than a certificate The fine detail The death notices carried in newspapers include fine detail that death records do not contain. For instance, the fatal accident story - see above - for the death of James W. Buckley (aged 13) in a cotton mill in Ashton in 1891, gives an unrivalled insight into the poor fate of the young lad. In addition to giving the name, age of the deceased, date, father s occupation, place, company s name and cause of death, this detailed report also offers readers a real sense of the harsh working conditions endured by cotton mill workers at this time. Ancestral searches Among the millions of pages that you can now search for on the British Newspaper Archive website, there are numerous types of article that are essential for doing genealogical research. Adverts, readers letters, accident reports and news stories are all great resources, but family notices will be your most powerful research aid. To begin your search, you just need to type the name of your ancestor into the search box, and then use the filtering options to make your search more specific. Advertisements Ranging from articles for sale to public notices, the classified ads can help you to piece together the jigsaw puzzle of your ancestors working and migratory lives. Articles If your ancestor was in the news, you can find the relevant story in the general articles. Illustrated This search option helps you find illustrations, photographs and various types of graphic content, including those images that do not accompany an article. Also included in this section are drawings, charts, sketches, cartoons and local maps. You can search adverts, accident reports, news stories and much more Family Notice This is the most useful resource for family historians. Included here are birth, death and marriage notices, as well as family announcements for births, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, bereavements, remembrances, graduations, thank you notes, etc. Miscellaneous This search option includes items like crosswords, radio/tv schedules, weather forecasts, horoscopes - so you can find out how the planets were aligned for your ancestors weddings! 6 STEP-BY-STEP... THE BRITISH NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE Millions of Pages of Historical Newspapers Go Online The launch of the British Newspaper Archive in late 2011, heralds the arrival of millions of historical newspaper pages on the web. Anyone who is interested in history and genealogy will find co.uk an invaluable resource, enabling them to carry out detailed searches across centuries of local and regional newspapers. The newspapers have beendigitised and made searchable through a process of Optical- Character Recognition (OCR), which enables a searchable index of all recognised words to be built. There were four million pages available for the launch of the site. However, with continual scanning and digitisation, we will be adding thousands of pages on a daily basis. At launch, the majority of the newspapers will be from the 19th century. However, as scanning anddigitisation progresses, the site will expand and grow, eventually spanning over 250 years of UK newspapers. The intuitive search interface allows visitors to filter searches by keyword(s), publication title, location and date range. Searching the archive is completely free. To view an image, you canpurchase time limited pay-perview credits or opt for an unlimited annual subscription. To undertake a free search, just follow the steps below 1 The British Newspaper Archive homepage offers two main methods to find the pages you are interested in: namely, a keyword search box or, alternatively, you can choose to begin your search by selecting a specific newspaper title or region. 2To carry out a search by keyword, you just need to enter a keyword(s) into the standard search box and click Search. If you have a better idea of what you re looking for, the Advanced Search form combines several options to help refine your search. These include keyword(s); date; region; newspaper title; type of article and tags that other users have added 3The results pages comprise a thumbnail and a snippet of associated OCR text, ordered by relevance. If there are too many results you can refine them by either searching with more specific keywords, or by using the filters available in the left hand column. These filters allow you to refine your results by date, region, newspaper title or type of article. 4Once you have found the newspaper article you wish to view, click on the thumbnail. At this point if you have already chosen a usage package, the image will appear in the viewer. If not, you will be prompted to purchase a package. Once the viewer appears, you can move through the newspaper using a mix of zoom, scrolling and grab tools. 5When in the viewer, various options relating to the image are available. There are also some engaging features allowing you to add a comment or tag to an image to help contextualise it. Perhaps the most useful tool is bookmarking. This enables you tosave and organise your research into a series of folders in your personal Research area. 6When viewing an image, there is also a Selected Article Text option on the left side allowing you to correct any text that has been incorrectly OCRd. This option can be started by clicking the list of sections displayed and applying your own corrections. By correcting the text, you will be adding to the quality of the data which others can search.
