2 How to choose a goal Why it matters Donors want to feel good about giving. They want to know what cause their money is going toward, who it impacts and why it matters. A clear fundraising goal helps supporters picture your bus trip to regionals... new uniforms... or a 3D Printer... and see how this goal helps your team do awesome things. Where to start Decide what you want to accomplish with the money your team raises. This can be anything your team needs from a Makerbot 3D printer, to Regional Competition Fees or The Senior Trip to Washington, DC. WHICH LINE WOULD YOU USE? Mom, Can I get $25? OR Mom, The robotics team wants to compete in the Baltimore Regionals. Can I get $25 to cover the bus trip? GOAL CHECKLIST My goal is for the benefit of my team or club My goal is ambitious but realistic My goal is specific enough for supporters My goal is large enough to be meaningful

3 How to craft a great pitch Goal title and image YOUR GOAL TITLE Potential supporters will notice your title and image first. Good titles are short, clear, and specific. Use it to communicate your goal clearly. If you re fundraising for a specific tool, say what its called and maybe it s function. If it s an event, include the event name and location. If it s a second robot, say that. People are more likely to give if they have a clear understanding where their money is going. EXAMPLE GOAL TITLES 1. Crusher, the 2nd Team Robot 2. St. Louis Regional Lacross Competition Fees 3. Senior Class Officers Trip to NASA 4. New Varsity Uniforms CHOOSING AN IMAGE Let your goal image pull on potential donors heartstrings. An image of the item your needs is OK, but a great image of your team in action can go a long way toward helping potential donors connect with your cause. Like any image post, make sure photos are bright, clear, and in focus.

4 How to craft a great pitch Goal description This is where you add detail about your goal. It s a great place to say who, what, when and why your goal is important. QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF What could reaching your goal impact for your club... for individuals... for the local community? Why is this goal important to your team... to your school... to the local community?

5 How much $$$ to ask for Budget wisely Carefully consider how much money you need to raise to meet your goal. This might require a list of expenses for something big like a club trip, or it could be a simple amount based on the price of an item or an entrance fee. In either case, be sure to include a small buffer within your budget to account for things like shipping fees, taxes, and the Edco 4.9% fee associated with your account. THE EDCO DIFFERENCE 1. You can earn additional money towards reaching your goal with a Power Grant 2. You keep the funds raise whether or not you reach your goal TIPS & GUIDELINES 1. Review previous team budgets for the real cost of recurring expenses 2. Monitor progress toward your financial goal once you start fundraising to determine if you need to adjust your strategy or get more temmates involved in the fundraising effort. 3. Add a buffer of 10% to your budget to account for all unknowns and additional fees. For example, if you need $5000 for the registration fee of an upcoming competition, set the finanical goal to $5,500.

6 How to set an end date Fundraising deadlines work As you re well-aware from class assignments, there s nothing like a deadline to get people working. This is true for your team and donors too. If you tell someone, you have just 5 days left to raise the money, they ll feel the pressure too, and will be more likely to give. END DATE GUIDELINES 1. You can only have one active goal at a time 2. You can set new goals as often as you like 3. All goals end immediately before midnight Eastern Time on the end date you select Things to consider You must set an end date or deadline for your fundraising goal. This date can be based on an outside due date, like a competition entry deadline, or be an arbitrary date your team wants to shoot for. If it s an external due date, be sure to leave yourself enough time between the end date of your fundraising goal and the external due date to gain access to the money.

7 Example Fundraising Goals Here are a couple great examples of different types of goals from high school robotics clubs. Notice how the goal title, image, description and date all work together to tell a compelling story.
