1 Over the course of the semester, you will complete countless journal entries. This assignment allows you the opportunity to expand on entries and compile a collection of your writing. Possible ideas for annotations: Why you choose to expand the piece. Your musings about a type of writing. What you were trying to accomplish with your piece. Who helped you with the piece; what they helped with. What response you hope your reader has. What was challenging about your entry. What effect your words have on your audience. Include any background your reader might need to know before they read your piece.

2 On Writing as a Writer Page 1 A brief reflection on my oh-so lofty writing goals. An Ness Page 2 One afternoon in my writing class, we were asked to write about something we were good at. I thought about writing about teaching or crafting; I m pretty good at both. But I decided to write about my abilities as an auntie. I happen to think I m a darn good one. Something Old. Something New. Something Borrowed. Something Blue. Page 3 Although I got married a couple years ago, this age-old wedding custom always fascinated me. Each of the somethings has a story, and I decided to write, in verse, the story of the somethings that accompanied me down the aisle. Ode to My Hair Page 4 We always want what we don t have, right? Of course we do. When I was young, I wanted nothing more than to have bone straight, flat hair. Hair that wouldn t curl unless it was shellacked with LA Looks gel Va-Voom hairspray. It took me a long time to come to terms with my hair. This poem embodies that journey. Hands Page 5 This poem speaks of grandma s belief that our hands are special, and how her idea shaped my appreciation of hands. This piece emphasizes how our hands are far more significant than we think. Journal Entry (of a cynical writer) Page 6 The day before the first day class, my mom encouraged me to revisit journal writing. I attempted. And what followed is not for the faint of heart. This entry was typed exactly as it appears on the first page of my new journal. Minority Page 7 This piece describes the moment I realized I was a minority. I was 11 and in a Hallmark Stationary store. I attempted to weave flashbacks and reflection into the incident. My Credo Page 8 Illustrated in these six stanzas are the principles I live by. Obviously, the beliefs came quite easily, but I struggled to select the perfect words and the perfect structure for the stanzas. Thanksgiving Page 9 I am genuinely grateful for this piece because: 1) I was able to write my way through the memories of holidays with my grandma and grandpa, and 2) I got to write about the shenanigans of Thanksgiving in an RV. An Open Letter to My Students Page 10 At the start of every school year, I ask my students to write me a letter. It enables me to gauge their writing abilities and learn a little bit about them. Always the considerate teacher, I provide a basic friendly letter format, sentence frames, and easy topics to ease the nasty effects of summer brain drain. But, I ve never written a letter to them. Here is my letter. Until Then Page 11 The first poem I wrote to my husband (then boyfriend). It s nothing spectacular, but it s meaningful. Family Page 12 Another piece started in class and finished on a lazy afternoon. What is family? Where I Come From Page 13 I always have my students include this poem in their end of the year poetry anthologies; however, I m switching it up this year and having them complete this at the beginning of the school year (within the first week). I m also toying with the idea of including this poem in the I-Search project I am planning for the spring semester.
