5 BE A CAREER WISE RESEARCHER! 1. Consider what you do and why- including your skills, values, interests and personality 2. Consider development areas and do something about it 3. Explore your options and what is required 4. Build a network/seek collaborations

6 WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?(YEAR 2 AND CONT.) 1. Consider what you do and why! Know and developyour skills, competences and interests and especially the value you can bring to a job, the needs youcan fulfill and the difference youcan make. Do a thoroughskills analysis both yourhard core skills and yoursofterskills Find out which skills you would like to develop and do it. Considerwhen you are most in flow Consider what topics or areas you find most interesting to work with And do this continously throughout your research years.

7 EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS (YEAR 2 AND CONT.) 2. Spend time exploring your potentiel options Use your network to get insights and an understanding of different options Read job ads for inspiration Know what different jobs require How many 1.authorships does it take to get funding, what skills do management consultancy firms value, what skills are valued as? Do coffee meetings to explore companies, their needs and their atmosphere Consider who is doing something you would like to do Read about peoples career paths on Linkedin Talk to companies/alumni at fairs and events

8 BUILD A NETWORK 1. Start with your PI, work colleagues (close, further out, peripheral) 2. Include other collaborators 3. Include friends and family 4. Include other people you are connected to via hobbies, school, research interest, alumni 5. Join professional groups also online 6. Find relevant persons and establish contact 7. Get a mentor

10 TAKING ACTION Make a decision based on your research of options and narrow your options. Then - (appr.6 months before handing in your PhD): Create a good CV Activate your network Improve yourlinkedin profile Find relevant workplaces Contact people Apply for jobs: linkedin, jobsites etc

11 REMEMBER You need to be able to communicate: Your broad professional understanding of an area, topic, subject The value you can bring the company/organisation Your specifik knowledge of a certain area Your techniques/methodologies/programming languages etc. Your personality And you need to know who this is relevant for - then you are EMPLOYABLE!
