1 Math Reflections YOUTH ART PROJECT FOR: REFLECTIONS OBJECTIVE Students will learn about reflection and recognize lines of symmetry. Set up/prep time: 30 minutes Activity time: 2-3 hours Materials Needed: Colored markers, pencil, eraser, paper, ruler V1

2 COMMON CORE STATE STANDARD CCSS.Math.Content.4.G.A.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. PRE LESSON ASSESSMENT Do a pre-lesson assessment to determine what the students already know about reflections and line of symmetry. 3 STEP 1 Starting with a blank 8 ½x11 white paper, have the students turn their paper to landscape orientation. Using a ruler, have the students measure ½ inch marks across all four outer edges of the paper. Have the students then connect the lines horizontally across from one another so the entire paper is covered with horizontal lines ½ inch apart from one another. Once the horizontal lines are completed, have the students connect the marks vertically across from one another until the paper is covered with vertical lines ½ inch apart from one another as well. Be sure to tell the students these lines need to be drawn very lightly; they will be erased later. STEP 2 Have the students create a mirror image pattern. For example, if the paper is folded in half vertically, the images should match up. If the paper is folded horizontally, the image will again match up, creating a reflection. For this particular example, Celtic Knots were chosen to achieve the mirroring reflections. Once the students are done drawing their patterns, have them trace over their patterns with a black fine point pen. They can then erase the lines drawn in pencil in step one.

4 STEP 3 Have the students color their pattern as they desire, keeping in mind the image has to be reflected. In other words, whatever color is used for one part of the pattern must be the same in the reflecting patterns. Once the students are done coloring their patterns, have them color the background in a solid color. POST LESSON ASSESMENT Do a post assessment to determine what new knowledge the students have gained.
