1 Data Analysis Part 1 Power-up Krusty the clown was told that a certain itching powder was the newest and best thing on the market; it even claims to cause 50% longer lasting itches. Interested in this product, Krusty buys the itching powder and compares it to his usual product. One test subject (A) is sprinkled with the original itching powder, and another test subject (B) was sprinkled with the Experimental itching powder. Subject A reported having itches for 30 minutes. Subject B reported to have itches for 45 minutes. 1. What is the independent variable? 2. What is the dependent variable? 3. Which subject is the control group? 1

Statistics is a branch of mathematics that involves the collection, presentation, and analysis of data. In statistics, tables and graphs are usually used to represent data. 2

3 Data Tables ALWAYS organize your data using a data table. Helps you to see the relationship between variables. 4 Paper Towel Strength in Washers Held What is a Bar Graph? A bar graph is used to display data in separate CATEGORIES. It tells you the how many or how much of something that can be grouped under each category. We say it shows FREQUENCY. 9 Measures of Central Tendency When you have a list of numerical data it is often helpful to use one or more numbers to represent (or summarize) the whole set. These numbers are called measures of. Average (Mean) Division is used in statistics to find the, or, of a set of data. Find the Mean Find the sum of the numbers Divide by the number of numbers in the set 9

10 Calculating the Mean To find the mean of a number: 1. Add up all the data to find the TOTAL 2. 11 Measures of Variation In statistics, are used to describe the distribution of data. The of a set of data is the difference between the greatest and least values of a set.
