6 Foreword Editorial cartooning is a marriage between satire and allusion. As a visual art, its purpose is to illuminate complex issues in an easily understandable format and to elevate the public consciousness. Martin Luther took advantage of the medium during the Reformation in the sixteenth century. Woodcuts by Lucas Cranach the Elder contrasted images of the familiar New Testament story of Jesus chasing the moneychangers from the Temple with the then contemporary image of the Pope writing indulgences for the wealthy landowners. Although this is the earliest example I could find, I would not be surprised if an archeologist someday uncovers a cave painting in which Grok lampoons Mook s prehistoric political pandering. I ve been a fan of cartooning since I was a wee lad; as I grew older and more politically and socially aware, I became enamored with the art of editorial cartooning. I grew to admire the editorial cartoonists and their ability to make complex issues easily understood while simultaneously driving home a particular point of view. A good editorial cartoonist can take an issue, local or national, and sway public opinion or at least make an arguable point. Two examples that come to mind are Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Nast although there are many others. Who can forget the image of the segmented snake with the words Join or Die? With it, Franklin made a powerful impression on colonial America. Thomas Nast was instrumental in bringing down the powerful Boss Tweed with his Tammany Hall cartoons. It s because of my admiration for the art and the artists that I have undertaken to produce this book. I believe the editorial cartoon is an important facet of the journalism profession. It should be the one indispensable item on the editorial page. Unfortunately today, however, the staff editorial cartoonist is disappearing from the pages of many newspapers. It is my feeble hope that by illustrating, instructing, and promoting the art and the artists I can, in some small way, contribute to the public s understanding and appreciation of the art. Therefore, this book is dedicated to the staff editorial cartoonist. I believe that when people understand the importance of the work these cartoonists do, they can begin to lobby their local newspapers and stop the hemorrhage of this classic art form. So, it is with great pleasure and admiration that I present some of the most coveted awards for editorial cartooning along with this year s award winners, a selection of the country s most successful and celebrated editorial cartoonists. Dean P. Turnbloom
7 Acknowledgments Obviously, a book of this sort doesn t come about without the help and support of a lot of people. I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the people who helped me compile this book. First, I want to thank my wife, Nanette; without her loving support and gentle encouragement, this book would not have been possible. Next I would like to thank each of the cartoonists for allowing me to use their work in this book (to avoid any semblance of favoritism, I list in alphabetical order): Nick Anderson, Clay Bennett, Matt Davies, Walt Handelsman, Mike Keefe, Mike Lester, Mike Luckovich, Jim Morin, Jean Planteureux, David Pope, Alfredo Sabat, Steve Sack, Mike Thompson, Signe Wilkinson, and Adam Zyglis. Without their generosity and talent, I would have had nothing to celebrate with this book. Of these cartoonists, I single out Nick Anderson for the extra help and encouragement he gave me and Clay Bennett for his advice and editing tips. A special thanks to Marianne Sugawara and Andrea Fryrear of Creators Syndicate for their special assistance. I also want to thank all of the wonderful people associated with the various awards who were so helpful and kind while I gathered information and images. My fear is that in the process of writing this book I may not have captured them all, so I apologize in advance for the oversight. The following people were also instrumental in aiding the book s completion. For the Pulitzer Prize: Claudia Stone Weissburg and Professor Gissler; for the National Headliner Award: Debbie Schurman and Paul Merkoski; for the Thomas Nast Award: Aimee Reinhart and Sonya Frye; for the Berryman Award: Bob Meyers and Kashmir Hill; the Sigma Delta Chi Award: Heather Porter, Andrew Farkas, and Terry Harper; the Fischetti Award: Jim Sulski; the Herblock Prize: Frank Swoboda and Marcela Brane; the Lurie Award: Ranan Lurie and Marco Amitrano. Also, a special thanks to Ranan Lurie, whose early encouragement and kind words made me think this work might have some potential after all. Lastly, I want to thank the long line of staff editorial cartoonists who have made their indelible mark on journalism locally and nationally. It is their profession and art that this small book celebrates.
