1 Step Four B2.1 READING & TRAINING About the Author Page 9 activity 1 1 F He was a sickly child. 2 F He later asked her to write them down for him. 3 T 4 F Mina believes women should always work for the men in their lives Mina is a strong woman but not independent. 5 T 6 T 8 F Irving sucked his financial blood. 9 T 10 T 11 F The book s Dracula comes from earlier Gothic books. 12 T 13 F He has appeared in more than 200 films. 14 T CHAPTER ONE Page 11 activity 1 Bram Stoker Dracula KEY TO THE ACTIVITIES AND EXIT TEST Page 11 activity 2 1 Munich 2 the landlady 3 worried 4 afraid 5 go faster 6 an hour 7 became excited 8 smiled 9 was going Page 22 activity 1 1 B 2 A 3 D 4 D 5 D 6 C 7 D Page 23 activity 2 Page 23 activity 3 Page 24 activity 4 1 D 2 E 3 C 4 B 5 A Page 26 activity 1 A 3 B 6 C 1 D 4 E 2 F 5 CHAPTER TWO Page 37 activity 1 1 At first he was curious, but then his feeling of curiosity changed to horror and disgust. 2 Because it gave him pleasure to disobey the Count. 3 Two of them had dark hair and eyes that were almost red. The third one had blonde hair and light blue eyes. All had bright white teeth and sensuous lips. 4 They were going to bite him. 5 The Count came in and stopped them. 6 He gave them a baby to feed on. 7 He could tell from the date on the last letter he wrote. 8 Earth in large boxes. 9 His eyes were open, but Jonathan could not tell whether he was alive or dead. 10 His grey hair had turned dark. His lips were redder and he was round with blood. 11 He realized that he was a monster and that he was helping to bring him to London where he would create thousands more monsters just like himself. 12 He locked him in his room, and he kept wolves around the castle. 13 Because the Count went around wearing Jonathan s clothes. 14 He was going to climb down the castle wall. Page 38 activity 2 1 Jonathan left for the Count s castle on 4 May, which was the eve of St George s Day. 2 The Count s coach, which was pulled by four splendid horses, arrived. 3 One of Jonathan s companions on the coach said, The dead travel fast, which is a line from a famous German poem. 4 The Count s breath had a terrible odour, which made Jonathan feel sick. 5 The Count was going to buy a property called Carfax, which was near a lunatic asylum. 6 Jonathan discovered he was a prisoner in the castle, which was on a 1000-foot-high precipice. he Count, who could climb down walls like a lizard, knew English very well. Page 39 activity 3 May 5 Finally, Jonathan Harker has arrived! I have been waiting for this day for years. Things could not be better. Mr Harker seems like a perfect young Englishman the kind who can teach me to speak English so that no one will suspect that I am from Transylvania. I also think he will be easy to manipulate. I was even able to block him from killing me with a shovel by simply using hypnotic powers the power of my eyes. This makes me believe that I can make him do whatever I want, and then in the end I will kill him. First I will dine on his blood and then I will let my three wives of evil have some of his blood too. Then all will be well and I can go to London and begin my invasion. In just a few years I will have thousands and thousands of vampires that I command. In the end, I will rule all! 2
