The two Towers Unwin Paperbacks, Fifth impression 1977 Introduction The books are set in a medieval sort of time in a fantasy world called Middle-Earth. Middle-Earth is divided into several countries with all different races and various tongues. There are many kinds of creatures like Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Hobbits, Goblins, Wargs, Uruk-Hai and many more. The Lord of the Rings is Sauron, an evil lord who made 21 magic rings which he - all but one - gave away: Three Rings for The Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. This One Ring was cut from his finger by Isildur, a prince of the Men. Sauron wants his Ring back at any cost. The only way to destroy this Ring is to throw it in the fire where it has been created. This fire is Mount Doom a volcano in Mordor the Black Land of Sauron, a place of death were no-one dares to dwell. Middle-Earth In Eriador it was always safe till now but Sauron knows the Ring is in the Shire so he sends his Nazgûl to find the Ring. In the west of Eriador lies Lindon. From that land the Elves flee to the Undying-Lands. In the ancient days Arnor lied in Eriador. It was a land of the Men and it was a strong and beautiful. After Isildur's death the Dunedain, his heirs and rangers who wanted and still want to protect Arnor came to live over there but the Witch-king destroyed Arnor long ago. In the East of Eriador are the Misty Mountains. At the other side of the Misty Mountains lies Rhovanion or Pagina 1 van 7

2 Wild land. Over here are Lórien and Mirkwood, two forests where Elves live and many lonely or little groups of mountains are. In the south are Gondor, Rohan and the evil country Mordor. Rohan was almost always safe from war but in Gondor there was always the threat of Mordor. Now Sauron, the lord of Mordor, has returned to his black tower Barad-dûr. From now on he attacks Gondor again. Normally, Gondor gets help from Rohan but this time Rohan is under attack by Sauron s helper Saruman. Sauron gets also help of the wicked men from Rhûn, Harad and the city of the Corsairs of Umbar. Main Characters Aragorn, or Strider is the only heir on the throne of Gondor. He left a long time ago. He is afraid to go back to his country because he has the same blood as one of his ancestors, who almost caused the return of Sauron. Aragorn is the only hope for the people of Middle-Earth. Legolas, is an elf and the prince of Mirkwood. Together with Gimli he has a competition about who kills the most enemies. Gimli, the son of Gloin is a dwarf. He is one of the most important dwarves because he is a member of the council of Elrond. He lives in Erebor, a huge mountain where his grandfather lived. The dwarves were defeated by the dragon Smaug. About sixty years ago the fellowship of fourteen dwarves and the hobbit Bilbo defeated Smaug. Frodo Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, a landscape with many green hills and ponds. He is Bilbo s nephew. He always dreams of adventures. His best friends are Samwise, Meriadoc and Peregrin. When he inherits Bilbo s magic ring he becomes a Ring bearer and starts his own adventure. He doesn t like his adventure because is doesn t work out the way he always wanted it to be. Samwise Gamgee, a hobbit and the best friend of Frodo. He overhears a conversation between Frodo and the wizard Gandalf. Gandalf finds out that Sam heard everything. By way of punishment Sam has to accompany Frodo on the dangerous trip to the Prancing Pony an inn in Bree. Meriadoc Brandybuck, a hobbit and best friend of Pippin. Almost everyone calls him Merry. He gets himself in much trouble. His heart is strong and he wants to do everything to help his friends. Peregrin Took, a hobbit who is called Pippin by everyone. He has lots of humour. When he and Merry are captured by Treebeard, it s his idea to destroy Isengard. Boromir, a man of Gondor and the eldest son of the steward. He always wants to use the ring against Sauron, but at the last moments of his life he understands that that should cause the death of the free Peoples of Middle-Earth. Sauron, the dark lord came to Middle-Earth at the beginning of the first age. He only came to destroy Middle-Earth but made a great mistake by thinking no one would defend themselves Pagina 2 van 7

3 Saruman, the wizard and head of the white council. He fell into darkness when he delved to deep into the study of his enemy s ways. He s building up an army of more than Uruk-Hais; a mixture of Orcs and goblins Gandalf, the wizard is a member of the white council and one of the five Istari ( wise ). He always tries to help everyone in the world. Gandalf is also known as Mithrandir ( grey wanderer ). He carries a staff which lights up in the dark and that is also a magic staff. He has been fighting Sauron and his servants for about 2000 years. He bears one of the Elven rings. Théoden is the king of Rohan; one of the big kingdoms of men. His decisions are sometimes a little bit the decisions of a coward. He always tries to flee for the war and when he can t flee anymore he pulls back in the big fortress of Rohan: Helms Deep. This fortress has a big wall of massive stone with one little place where water can leave the fortress. This hole is the reason that Rohan almost falls. Eómer is the prince of Rohan. He is banished for saying to the king that there is war coming. He has 2000 loyal men riding with him through Rohan and killing all the Uruk-Hai they meet. Eówyn is the princess of Rohan and sister of Eómer. She s in love with Aragorn but he doesn t love her. She isn t afraid of anything but she s very afraid of staying at home till all chances of valour are gone, because she is not allowed to go to war. Faramir is a captain of Gondor. He really wants to show his father his qualities. His father believes that only his brother Boromir has the quality to defend the free peoples of Middle Earth. Treebeard is the leader of the Ents of Fangorn. He likes to walk in the forest. He must take care of Merry and Pippin. When they come close to Isengard he sees that all the trees have been cut down. He is very frustrated about it and launches an attack on Isengard. The mouth of Sauron is the messenger of Sauron. He tells the free peoples what they must do to get peace with Sauron. The Nazgûl are ringwraiths. They used to be ancient kings. When Sauron gave all nine rings of power they became his slaves. They are always chasing the ring. They are terrifying when they get close to you. Denethor is the steward of Gondor. He sees Sauron s plans in the Palantir but he does not interfere because his army is much smaller than Sauron s. Bilbo is also a hobbit of the sleepy Shire. He bore the ring during sixty years and did not get older during this period. When he inherited the ring to Frodo his body aged quickly. Elrond is king of Rivendell and one of the three leaders of the elves. He wants friendship between all the free peoples. He sends the elves one group after the other to the Grey Havens where they can sail to the Pagina 3 van 7

4 Undying Lands. Together with Gandalf and Galadriel he bears one of the Elven Rings. Lurtz is the Leader of the Uruk-Hai. He is the first of Saruman s men. He kills Boromir in Amon Hen. Galadriel is the queen of the Elves of Lórien and bears an Elven Ring. If you really want something like reinforcement or help she can read your mind. Celeborn is the husband of Galadriel and king of Lórien. He always welcomes visitors to his magic forest. He is afraid that he can t defend Lórien against evil forces like those of Sauron and Saruman. When war comes to Rohan he sends reinforcements. Thanks to this Rohan survives the big attack of Saruman. Arwen is the daughter of Elrond and princess of Rivendell. She is in love with Aragorn and gives him her Evenstar, a jewel that gives her immortality and can protect him. She doesn t go to the Grey Havens like her father wants, because she has still hope and doesn t want to lose Aragorn. Haldir is the protector of Lórien. He is a good friend of Aragorn and the fellowship. He leads the army of the elves in Helms Deep but he dies there. Wormtongue is a servant and spy of Saruman. He is in love with Eówyn but she hates him. He pretends he s an advisor of king Théoden but because of him Saruman can bewitch Théoden. He tries to let the king do nothing against the marching army of Saruman. The Two Towers Like the Fellowship this story also consists of two books. These books tell about the war in Rohan and the connection between the tower of Saruman and the tower of Mordor, which belongs to Sauron. Book III - The treason of Isengard In the hills Aragorn hears the horn of Gondor which is always borne by Boromir. He runs towards Boromir but when he arrives, Boromir sits against a tree. Boromir tells Aragorn he tried to take the Ring from Frodo and that the Uruk-Hai took Merry and Pippin. At the moment Aragorn asks if Frodo was with the other Hobbits Boromir dies. Then Legolas and Gimli arrive. They help Aragorn to bring Boromir to the boats. Because they can t give him a proper burial they give him to the river Anduin. After Aragorn has inspected the earth and has found out that Frodo wasn t with the other Hobbits, they go to Rohan to find Merry and Pippin. After a several days travel they meet Riders of Rohan. The Riders tell them that they had killed all the Uruk-Hai and left none alive. In the meantime Merry and Pippin were carried through Rohan by the Uruk-Hai. The Uruk-Hai and Orcs were sent by Saruman the White, Lord of the Wise who has turned to Evil and tries to get the Ring. On a night the Uruk-Hai rest at the edge of the woods of Fangorn. The Riders of Rohan attack the Uruk-Hai. During the panic Merry and Pippin manage to escape. In the woods of Fangorn they meet Treebeard, the leader of the Ents. Ents are shepherds of the trees. Treebeard says he should bring the Hobbits to the white wizard. The Hobbits first thought is would be Saruman, but when they arrived they saw it was Pagina 4 van 7

5 Gandalf! Gandalf survived the fall in Moria and is now Gandalf the white. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli find tracks of Merry and Pippin and follow them into the woods of Fangorn. There they also meet Gandalf. Gandalf tells them war came to Rohan and that they have to go immediately to Edoras the capital of Rohan with the Golden Hall. When they arrive there they can t get to Théoden because they have many weapons. They leave their weapons at the door, except Gandalf s staff because he said it was his walking stick. Gandalf bewitches Théoden to get Saruman s influence out of his mind. Wormtongue tries to prevent this by attacking Gandalf. His efforts are in vain. Gandalf tells Théoden that Saruman has betrayed him and that he must go to war. Théoden decides to flee to Helm s Deep, a big fortress in the White Mountains, entirely made of one rock. Next to the fortress there is a huge valley behind a large wall. Before they leave, Eómer returns to his uncle and rides with him to Helm s Deep. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli join them. Gandalf leaves the group to get help. When they arrive at Helm s Deep Théoden immediately starts preparing the fortress for the big attack. During the preparations Elves from Lórien, leaded by Haldir, arrive to help. The next day the Uruk-Hai attack starts in the evening. During the fight Haldir and many soldiers die. At the end of the fight Théoden and Aragorn and some soldiers are cut off from the group with Legolas and Gimli by the Uruk-Hai. Théoden wants to give up but Aragorn asks to ride out with him to meet the Uruk-Hai. Passing the gate they see the sun rise in the east and the see Gandalf on the hill with Erkenbrand, lord of the Westfold and his soldiers. Together they clean the fortress from the Uruk-Hai. Gandalf persuades Théoden to go to Isengard to destroy the last of Saruman s armies. Merry and Pippin are walking with Treebeard to the west but Pippin asks Treebeard to go to the south which will bring them close to Isengard. Treebeard agrees. As soon as he sees the trees that have been cut down by the Orcs, he gets furious and gives a roar that can be heard through the whole forest. From all sides Ents come towards them. With the Ents they attack Isengard. Treebeard uses rocks to take over Isengard. He releases the river Isen by breaking down the dam. Saruman is being captured and they keep him in prison in his tower. When Gandalf arrives with Théoden and his men, Saruman comes out of his tower Orthanc and stands at the rail. He refuses to give his staff and the Key of Orthanc. Gandalf takes his power by breaking Saruman s staff and casts him from the order and from the Council. Gandalf gives Treebeard the order to protect Saruman and keep him in his tower. Then a window opens and Wormtongue shows himself. He throws a heavy ball out of the window, but because he doesn t know who he wants to hit he throws between Saruman, Gandalf and Théoden. Pippin fetches the ball. Gandalf rides to him and takes the ball. He says it s a Palantir, one of the twelve looking-stones the people of Numenor brought from the west. The people of Numenor were the first men who came to Middle-Earth and later they lived in Arnor and Gondor. When they have returned to Edoras, Pippin wants to look in the Palantir just once. The first moments he sees nothing but then many things of Sauron s plans are being shown to him. Sauron wants to know his name but Pippin doesn t tell him. Sauron is angry because he is not obeyed and he hurts Pippin. Then Aragorn and Legolas run into the room because they feel Sauron was inside. They scream and Gandalf wakes up. Aragorn takes the Palantir from Pippin and Gandalf covers the Palantir. He is very angry with Pippin and reads Pippin s eyes. There is no lie in Pippin s eyes so Pagina 5 van 7

6 Gandalf says they have been very lucky. Some days later Gandalf decides to go with Pippin to Minas Tirith to warn Denethor, the steward, for the plans of the enemy. During the ride Pippin falls asleep. Book IV - The Ring goes East Frodo and Sam notice that they are being followed. Frodo fells into a steep cliff. Sam tries to pull him out with a rope given to them by the Elves of Lórien. Frodo sees Gollum asleep. He silently walks to him and captures him with the Elven rope. When they are out of the cliff they put the rope around his neck. Gollum can t handle it, because he is allergic to Elves and Elfish stuff. He promises the Hobbits to bring them to Mordor if they take away the rope from his neck. Frodo believes him and remove the rope. Gollum leads them out of Emyn Muil through the Dead Marshes to the Black Gate of Mordor. The gate is closed and guarded by many Orcs, Trolls and also The Eye of Sauron looks there frequently. Gollum tells Frodo he knows another way into Mordor and starts to lead the way. At the start Gollum catches two young rabbits. He tells Frodo he likes to eat them raw but Sam says there is only one way to eat rabbits and that is to have them cooked. Frodo finds out Gollum used to be called Sméagol because of his behaviour. From this moment on they call him Sméagol. Halfway they see a company of soldiers from Rhûn. They see many arrows coming from the forest. When they take a better look they see soldiers in the forest who are leaded by Faramir, captain of Gondor and brother of Boromir. Faramir defeats the Rhûn soldiers. Frodo and Sam try to escape but some soldiers of Faramir capture them. Sméagol escapes. The Hobbits are taken to the Forbidden Pool, where the Rangers have their headquarter. Faramir questions them but the Hobbits don t say anything about the Ring. That night Faramir wakes Frodo and shows him the Forbidden Pool. Down there Sméagol is fishing. Faramir asks Frodo if he should have this man shot, because on entering the Pool stands the penalty of Death. Frodo asks if he could go to Sméagol. Faramir agrees but when both come out of the Forbidden Pool Faramir s men capture Sméagol. Sméagol feels Frodo has betrayed him. So he tells Faramir everything about the Ring. Faramir wants to bring the Hobbits to his father in Minas Tirith. When they see Osgiliath, the capital of Gondor, Sam tells him why Boromir died and Faramir lets them go at the Cross-roads. From there they walk to the south to the Dead City which is also called Minas Morgul. Just ahead Minas Morgul are the secret stairs of Cirith Ungol leading into Mordor. Climbing the stairs they see the army of Minas Morgul attacking Minas Tirith beneath them. On the stairs Frodo and Sam argue about the Elven bread because Gollum threw it down the stairs after putting crumbs on Sam s cloak. He wants Frodo to mistrust Sam. Frodo believes Gollum. Frodo sends Sam away. Sam returns. After the stairs is a tunnel guarded by the huge spider Shelob. The spider attacks Frodo about half an hour after entering the tunnel. Shelob chases Frodo. Gollum follows. Sam is already coming back and sees Shelob spinning her web around Frodo. Sam stabs her with Sting, Frodo s sword. At the moment Shelob starts to drowse him, Sam uses Galadriel s Phial the Light of Eärendil. Shelob fears the light and runs off but attacks again. This time Sam sticks the Sting into her stomach. This hurts her so badly that she returns to her cave. Sam thinks Frodo died during the attack and takes the Ring to fulfil the Quest. Gollum attacks Sam to get the Ring but Sam throws Gollum in a deep hole. After that Orcs arrive. They take Frodo after they have concluded that he is not dead. Sam overhears them and thinks himself to Pagina 6 van 7

7 be a fool. He follows the Orcs to Cirith Ungol, an old fortress built by Gondor to keep the enemy inside Mordor. But the Orcs shut the gates before he can enter. My opinion I enjoyed reading all the books because they gave me a lot of fun. They are full of humour, fantasy, sadness and happiness. Some things are being told without a proper end. Pagina 7 van 7
